Worst Christmas present

I feel ungrateful but also very disappointed. My husband is crap at gifting but this really takes the biscuit. I am a 53 year old woman and we have been together for 26 years. He bought me a periscope. Am I being unreasonable to be disappointed and ungrateful?😓

My in laws were crap at gifts, I got a tea stained second hand cardigan one year from PILs. SIL gave me a box of Typoo tea bags.
DH seemed to have inherited the gene the year he gave me a Bryan Ferry CD, we didn’t have a CD player. I just looked at him and said “Really?. Don't you dare”. I knew what his game was, to buy himself a CD player.
He’s improved a lot since then. I have had lovely thought out gifts since then. I
asked for and got an air fryer this year.

My aunt, who is a bit 'different' to all my other aunts on both sides, was so bad at gifts that is what we remember her most for.

Of her numerous bizarre gifts she gave each of us kids a clothes peg that holds a pen (similar to the one pictured). As a kid you just looked at it in silence with a puzzled "what the" expression. Being shoved by my mum to say thank you I can also recall.

My DH bought me Folic Acid one year (amongst other things). Yes we were about to try for a baby. The problem was we were opening gifts in front of the whole family. Way to pile on the pressure.

My Mum is notoriously bad at buying gifts. I have zero expectations now. You would think she might have some idea what I might like as her daughter, but apparently not. I have gone beyond finding it hurtful now how thoughtless her gifts are. I now just find the waste frustrating. I try and encourage her not to buy gifts or even send her links to what I would actually like. She still insists on buying things that are so not my taste.

I got 4 books (from friends), three of which I'd already read and recommended to said friends. Also, 6 months membership of an organisation I'm already a member of.

QueenMegan · 27/12/2023 23:13

What did you get him out of interest. I feel you need to definitely indulge in some whacky response next year?

PurplePositivity · 27/12/2023 23:10

What a random present!

I'd love to know his thought process, 'ah a periscope just what DW needs'. I'd have to ask him WTF he was thinking, comedy gold though.

Pigsinpainauchocolat · 27/12/2023 23:01

@ItWasnaMeGuv yes that is TMI 🤮🤮🤮

AmIEnough · 27/12/2023 23:01

Did he get you the submarine to go with it??!! What a strange present!!

Bookworm512 · 25/12/2023 22:38

Picture of periscope. When I said nothing, looking shocked, he added that it is apparently used by the military. Like I should be impressed.

I'm sorry but this is so funny!

If it makes you feel any better my dh got me a candle, from Sainsbury's.
We'd smelt them in the shop together last week and I told him how horrible this particular one was. He bought it because he liked it Confused

We, very bizarrely, got a very heavy marble rolling pin with a wooden stand from our neighbours. They gifted our kids really amazing tech, so I'm hoping it was lurking at the back of a cupboard and has been regifted. I have absolutely no idea what I said to her to make her think it would be a good gift. I've got a perfectly good wooden on which is 30 years old and does for all my rolling needs!

Are your neighbours asian? A marble rolling pin and wooden stand would be used for making a lot of indian/pakistani/bangladeshi food. I want one! 😁

One year I asked my ex-husband for Mrs Gaskell's 'Wives and Daughters', which I had begun reading but had to return to friend who leant it to me. He decided it was 'unsuitable' (thought it was a radfem book, I suspect) and bought me 'Manwatching' by Desmond Morris, who I do not like. It was about the same size as Gaskell and I was really pleased to see the present under the tree. Then I opened it and was so disappointed. I asked if he could not get the book I had wanted, which was when he said it was 'unsuitable'. I was furious and also couldn't imagine how he could be so stupid. I rather think I started reading 'Manwatching' but gave up after a while. I never did get a copy of 'Wives and Daughters'. I left him a few years later. Mind, a periscope sounds fun and also your DH has not commented as my ex did. I'd go out and buy the books you'd like and wrap the periscope up for this birthday.

Sensibleandboring · 27/12/2023 22:53

Yeah that sounds rubbish. I got an air fryer & was finding it hard to get excited also.

Howbizzare22 · 27/12/2023 22:52

This made me laugh out loud sorry OP! Unless you’ve talked about spying on the neighbours or a new found interest in submarines I cannot understand-so odd! Please ask him in the nicest possible way-whhhyyyy?

Hilarious! Love it! 😂🤣

My ExH forgot my birthday entirely the last year we were together, it was a bit of a gut punch :( First year with a baby too so felt quite sad he hadn’t helped her out with gifts. Have now remarried and opened Hamilton tickets for Christmas with a hotel and all the childcare arranged- so glad I moved on!

Mothership4two · 27/12/2023 22:39

My Dad gave me a set of headphones when I was about 12. The sort you plug into a record player - this was late 70s. I unwrapped it and waited for the record player to appear - it didn't. I didn't have a record player of my own.

Fortunately Mum bought my presents and Dad would just get a few extra randoms.

At the same time he bought me sheepskin slippers even though I had been very vocal about not wanting a sheepskin coat (some of my cousins had them - there must have been a trend at the time) or anything with fur on. And who buys an 12 yo sheepskin slippers for Christmas?

IjustbelieveinMe · 25/12/2023 21:16

I got lube.
At first I thought ooh it's hand cream or something else skin care related and when I opened it I thought oh ok.
There were two other presents I got too, but the lube is all I could think about.
I was told to not buy him a Xmas present, I think I know why now, as him using the lube on me will be it won't it Biscuit

I bought my DH something like this, sort of massaging lube stuff which was 'played with' on Christmas night Xmas Shock. Apparently "tastes nice" Xmas Grin [TMI]. Also gave him my old phone, all set up to use, some hand-made whiskey chocolates and a mystery weekend treat TBC Xmas Wink.

Suchasonganddance · 27/12/2023 22:32

After the brushed cotton animal pattern nightmare debacle we agreed to drop Christmas presents to each other.
This after about 10 years wed.
Makes me quite sad when I think of the effort some put into choosing the right present, but at least saves any further hurt.

Wristfolds · 27/12/2023 22:30

OP not sure if this has been established yet but do you live underground? If you’re being held somewhere subterranean the periscope would be ideal

Speedygonzales78 · 27/12/2023 22:28

I don't think I've ever got anything truly crap but I've certainly had some disappointments or things I didn't like or would use.
A Grogu mobile phone holder, massive mug with his ears, lots of other Grogu items purely because I watched The Mandalorian and thought he was cute and at the grand age of 50 these seem suitable gifts.
A Gino recipe book from my OH who clearly didn't flick through first because most of the recipes are stuff that he either wouldn't eat or contain an item he is allergic to.
Some cheap plastic truly hideous bracelets from a friend.
Age 13 I received odour eaters and some shoe lace clip on faces from a friend.
The same soap and glory set every year from mil, a few years running also a Boots teenager type set that I forget the name of, not Naturals, one after that, looked kind of like mini milk bottles.
A chocolate fondue set TWICE
Starbucks sets from ils 4 years running.
Above and other ceramic items from same set of ils already broken "because one of their kids dropped it".
I'll think of more in the morning 🤣

Mothership4two · 27/12/2023 22:26

I do the same @Shuggie1234 I don't wrap them but keep them to one side and get them out over Christmas to wear or enjoy

Nickinoo22 · 27/12/2023 22:17

This thread is brilliant 😂 I am lucky not having an OH so no grotty presents but have had a few in the past .

RaspberriesUpside · 27/12/2023 22:12

OP I am in a minority. I don’t find it funny at all. Your husband who knows you and apparently loves you, bought you a gift with very little thought. He made no effort to really understand what you would like. He didn’t get you books. He got you a random gift that I expect he may end up having a bit of fun with.

I would feel quite hurt and disappointed at the lack of thought OP. Unless you have just recently become a couple in which case I would give more leeway.

Nickinoo22 · 27/12/2023 22:12

Avacardo2023 · 25/12/2023 20:59

I'm similar age and marriage length OP and my DH handed me a bag of utter shite today. I have started to dread receiving any sort of presents from him but today I'm pissed off.

Anyway today's haul was a Mr Frosty (because I wanted one as a child and didn't get one, but he completely forgot he already bought me one for my 29th and another on my 40th and Mr Frosty was actually a bit shit and not how it looked on TV). So that, two silk eye masks (because why would you only need one, or in fact any) and a box of nut brittle.

Love it 😅😅😅
