I feel ungrateful but also very disappointed. My husband is crap at gifting but this really takes the biscuit. I am a 53 year old woman and we have been together for 26 years. He bought me a periscope. Am I being unreasonable to be disappointed and ungrateful?😓

Isn't that what skylights are for? To look though? At...the sky?

Crayfishforyou · 25/12/2023 23:23

My MIL got me a baking tray again. I have no idea why, because I hate any form of cooking.
She also gave me a gift token for DH’s favourite restaurant, that I don’t like at all.
DH got me quite pretty, very overpriced polyester PJs, two sizes too big.
I have recently started night sweats and hot flushes. If I didn’t like polyester before, I sure as hell can’t wear it now.
On the plus side MIL hates cats with a passion, and my cat sat staring at her furiously all through the christmas dinner. It really put MIL off her food and that was very funny.

Raincloudsonasunnyday · 25/12/2023 23:22

Oh OP, that’s so bad it’s funny 😂. Is your bed under the skylight? Will you pull it out from under the bed tonight, aim it at the skylight and describe to him everything you see? I would go to absolute town with this 😂

soupmaker · 25/12/2023 23:20

We, very bizarrely, got a very heavy marble rolling pin with a wooden stand from our neighbours. They gifted our kids really amazing tech, so I'm hoping it was lurking at the back of a cupboard and has been regifted. I have absolutely no idea what I said to her to make her think it would be a good gift. I've got a perfectly good wooden on which is 30 years old and does for all my rolling needs!

Squarespotsandripples · 25/12/2023 23:17

I've wanted a periscope for YEARS ever since we moved into my house that you can almost see the sea from. Have been convinced that with a periscope you could see it (the sea). No-one, despite all my hints, has got me one yet.
You have now firmed up my resolution that in the new year I will somehow achieve the seeing of the sea from my house. 🔭

Aposterhasnoname · 25/12/2023 21:43

This is brilliant, I can just imagine the neighbours faces when a periscope pops out of the skylight.

Instead of net curtain twitching it will be Up periscope.

Sorry, @Bookworm512 I just can't help but chuckle as it is such a random, strange gift.

I was at a sporting event lately and I couldn’t see a thing. The lady beside me had a periscope and could see all the action. I thought it was fantastic . Next time I go I thought I would treat myself 😂

You can have mine!

SIL visited Christmas Eve and gave us all D+V 😡

JudgeJ · 25/12/2023 23:04

First year married, students and skint, I got from OH the Robert Carrier cooking cards, I didn't even recognise the names of most ingredients let alone could afford any of them!

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 25/12/2023 23:04

We were a bit puzzled today when we received a toy bus and our 6yo niece got a chopping board - but both gifts were from the same couple, so we can only assume they must have accidentally switched the gift tags around!

Ummmreally · 25/12/2023 23:03

Omg, I’ve been laughing out loud at this thread and it’s also highly amused my husband too. Thank you for the laugh 😆, but I really do hope your husband does a little better next year for you.

justanothermummma · 25/12/2023 23:02

Ahahah I get this, but I laugh now rather than get sad.

I got the wrong sized boots (they were so pretty) and a ring that doesn't fit (easy error) - thing is, I know he feels worse than I do about it.

Provide a list, provide the list again.. I only gave my list once this year, will do it twice next time.

Or... don't gift them anything thoughtful next year if you're feeling spiteful (but what's the point in that?)

DP did well with earrings but an aunt gave me two completely ordinary tea bags.

Were they meant to be avant garde earrings? Did she think they were a statement piece i.e. sustainable hippy chic or scarecrow-wear?

porridgeisbae · 25/12/2023 23:00

I got lube. At first I thought ooh it's hand cream or something else skin care related and when I opened it I thought oh ok. There were two other presents I got too, but the lube is all I could think about. I was told to not buy him a Xmas present, I think I know why now, as him using the lube on me will be it won't it

Wow @IjustbelieveinMe I would hate that. It's kind of manipulative too. Will you bin him?

Bookworm512 · 25/12/2023 22:55

Last year I got a sushi making set, and some jewellery i had asked for and before that a cocktail making set. Both in the cupboard, unused.

He also got me a book on the Queens wittiest comments. Not really something I would read.

I'd love that, and a periscope lol.

Left · 25/12/2023 22:51

WTF!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Oh OP… If I saw that pointing towards me from a neighbours window I would be bloody terrified 😂

Has his present buying always been this… Unique?

JustMarriedBecca · 25/12/2023 22:50

Earrings from the in-laws. I've not had my ears pierced for 20 years.

HNY2023 · 25/12/2023 22:49

I received a voucher for afternoon tea for 1.

Guess I’ll pay for someone to join me !

QuiltedHippo · 25/12/2023 22:49

Brilliant 😂

CalmaLlamaDown · 25/12/2023 22:48

It doesn’t top your Military Periscope, but my DH gave me a jumper identical to the one I was actually wearing (and have owned for three years).

brawnthesheep · 25/12/2023 22:43

😆😆😆 I want to buy the dc one!

Hyppogriff · 25/12/2023 22:43

This is amazing

Bookworm512 · 25/12/2023 22:38

Picture of periscope. When I said nothing, looking shocked, he added that it is apparently used by the military. Like I should be impressed.
