Worst Christmas present

I feel ungrateful but also very disappointed. My husband is crap at gifting but this really takes the biscuit. I am a 53 year old woman and we have been together for 26 years. He bought me a periscope. Am I being unreasonable to be disappointed and ungrateful?😓

@OrigamiOwls. I did ask. I had terribly cold feet at a football match last month and we're going to another in a couple of weeks. To be fair he was being thoughtful but it's a bit of a rubbish present. I also would have liked a book or at a push a Molton Brown shower gel. Or a periscope.

TheSandgroper · 26/12/2023 00:27

DH is not one for political statements. He suggests sending it to Ukraine where it would be put to good use.

My MIL got me soap, gardening gloves (and TBF), money. I’d rather have an actual present, she is generally a good shopper so just CBA I suspect.

This sounds pretty good?! I got a tea towel from my MIL 😬

Babyghirl · 26/12/2023 00:14

@Bookworm512
Maybe your husband wanted it to look at female neighbours but bought you it as an excuse 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Cn1 · 26/12/2023 00:08

Why not a telescope?

BigButtons · 26/12/2023 00:07

A periscope would be very handy if trying to avoid someone in the next aisle at Tescos. I have done my fair of running off in an attempt to hide from people. This would be perfect 😀

I got two presents from DO. One was two pairs of ski socks. I've never been skiing in my life. Then he started nudging me to open the second present. It was silk liners to go inside the ski socks.

Have they offered any explanation for these gifts?

I've wanted a periscope for YEARS ever since we moved into my house that you can almost see the sea from. Have been convinced that with a periscope you could see it (the sea). No-one, despite all my hints, has got me one yet.
You have now firmed up my resolution that in the new year I will somehow achieve the seeing of the sea from my house. 🔭

As luck would have it, I might know where you can buy an as-new periscope. One careful lady owner!

He thought I might like it to look out of the skylight! I would have preferred one of the books I asked for.

I’m sorry but this really made me laugh! 😂😂😂

Is he a nice, thoughtful husband normally?

One of my older sisters gave me half a pack of Christmas window stickers.

Then she had a strop because I didn't buy her some fancy perfume she'd asked for. I got her a book.

The reason I got her a small token gift in the shape of a book is because she has form for shitty gift giving and I don't engage with her any more. For my wedding she gave me a few pounds in loose change (I got her a kitchen aid for the record, something she asked for and something that cost me a lot of money). She's not short of money and neither is her husband.

I knew she'd give me junk again this year so there was no way I was spending anything other than a tenner on her. She's an entitled cow.

Jesus. Good on you. Sounds like she was lucky to even get a book.

My MIL gives some random things, once she gave us cleaning supplies. She bought my son a box of plasters. I think she thinks she's being helpful Grin she brought this horrendous rug with a cat on it this year that her sister had made, because I like cats (actual real life cats) luckily my son fancied it so it's in his room lol

daisybe · 25/12/2023 23:44

Mil got me Palmers coco butter stretch mark cream. (I'm 8 months)

I sort of get the sentiment but at the same time, does she not think that by 8 months, i would have sorted myself out already!?

I was also gifted a little empty hessian bag thing with 3 plastic windows which I am fairly certain she received as a gift from us years ago which contained 3 jars or pots of some kind of product!! It's basically the "fancy packaging " of Bath products or possibly candles or the like.

Worst bit is that I was asked for a list from bil and sil and they said they'd share it with mil.

Nobody got me a single item off that list!
It wasn't unreasonable either, stuff from M&S that's £6 for example, a perfume that's £19, a puzzle roll up mat for £12 etc. Nothing majorly fancy.
and I also said there were some more pricier items so I was happy to just get 1 thing from all 3 of them. (Like around the £30-40 mark like a dressing gown from john lewis i liked) as I'd rather have 1 nice thing I'll definitely use vs. 20 pieces of useless tat.

I got 20 pieces of useless tat.
I tried!

Anyway, its the thought that counts I guess.

Every morning In hear the crows on our loft extension flat roof. It sounds like they are clog dancing. If I had your periscope I could look through the skylight and find out for myself.

Banrion · 25/12/2023 23:36

I love the insanity of this gift. You gotta love him for a unique gift 😃

easilydistracted1 · 25/12/2023 23:34

I've had lovely either thoughtful gjffs but am now sad I don't have a periscope. We could use it to check on where the dog is misbehaving. Maybe you could get a naughty dog

Fretfulmum · 25/12/2023 23:34

I think I’d rather have a periscope. I got a box of biscuits which DH received as a gift and showed me at the time, which then sat in the kitchen cupboard for weeks. He took it out, wrapped it and gave it to me. Pathetic

dewfirst · 25/12/2023 23:31

I didn’t receive a gift from my partner .
is this saying he hopes soon to be ex?
be careful what you wish for eh?

That's so bad it's almost genius! 😂I'm so sorry OP, it's upsetting when someone who should know you inside out demonstrates they really don't. It still made me guffaw though!

If it's any consolation my mother-in-law got me a fold-out information leaflet about the Bayeux Tapestry.

Perhaps if we set my gift on fire and then threw it up and out of your skylight we could watch it burn with your periscope?

This made me laugh so hard I cried 🤣🤣

Picture of periscope. When I said nothing, looking shocked, he added that it is apparently used by the military. Like I should be impressed.

Oh God 😆😆
