I feel ungrateful but also very disappointed. My husband is crap at gifting but this really takes the biscuit. I am a 53 year old woman and we have been together for 26 years. He bought me a periscope. Am I being unreasonable to be disappointed and ungrateful?😓

DH and I agreed we'd just give token presents under 20 quid so wasn't expecting much.
Didn't expect to be presented with a latex mask of a black poodle.
He'd got himself a Labrador one and thought we could film YouTube videos on dog boarding in disguise 🫤
Tried it on and can't even see out of it!

So much to unpack here 😂 Is your DH planning on becoming the Donal McIntyre of the Dog Boarding world? Without the matching dog suit, how are you planning on disguising the fact you are not canines?

This has genuinely tickled me 🤣

ConsuelaHammock · 26/12/2023 04:52

This thread has me in fits of giggles. I got a step ladder. Apparently I’m always asking for dh to bring a ladder home from the farm so I can clean the windows ??

He thought I might like it to look out of the skylight! I would have preferred one of the books I asked for.

I think your DH needs to be taught the difference between a telescope and a periscope!

No, but if I wanted to I could just stand on the bed.

He needs to buy you a car with a moon/sun roof! Then he can drive you around and you can pretend to be Inspector Gadget! Oh, the fun you both will have!

Sorry, couldn't resist. 😉

This made me laugh. I have to be very careful what I say to my DH as he has the most ridiculous memory for things I say. I'm a bit of a chatterbox and often just chat for the sake of it and say things like 'Oh I really need a ....' or 'Oh I saw X in the shop the other day...' I do this all year just idle chatter. Problem is he remembers and then I get it for Christmas. I can hardly ever remember saying I liked it but he is always so pleased with himself for getting me things that I (apparently) want or need. I think it's rather lovely OP that he has obviously thought about it and genuinely thinks you'll enjoy using it. Maybe you have said a few things in the past about stars/planets or something. Just embrace it and treat yourself to a book!

I have to be more careful too. My DH told me to make an Amazon wish list of things I use and things I don't like to buy. For S&G, I added a few things, but truly assumed he would know they were a joke. I removed them after a couple of days and put more serious stuff on there. SIGH

I just love the case of bottled water and jar of smoked paprika he got me. Really, I do. At least neither is a periscope. (Make sure to hide this thread from DH because he would think a periscope is a lovely idea too.)

I also got a few things I wanted, but again, he forgot the thing I asked for, in written form first and I had to buy my own flannel shirt and Godiva chocolates. I did give him the shirt to wrap but didn't trust him with the chocolates....

In all fairness though, the thing he forgot will be a NYE present or a "I love you" gift in the new future. He felt bad he forgot. He's just never been a good gift-giver.

HerRoyalNotness · 26/12/2023 03:58

I got a table top pinball game 😂 FFS.

i bought myself some new ski gloves so i had something decent to open in front of the kids. Tbf I also got perfume that I like that was running low. But yeah.

Whenthebirdssing · 26/12/2023 03:36

I got exactly what I wanted. I gave him links last year but got other stuff I didn’t want. I re sent the list around my birthday. Got nothing on it. Sent it again this year and asked please could I have one. He said but then it’s not a surprise. I explained I’d rather not have a surprise. Even then, a few weeks ago, he said ‘I don’t want to just get what’s on the list, it seems thoughtless’. So I had the chance to be very clear that he should not venture off the list and only the things on the list would make me happy. Success!

Were they meant to be avant garde earrings? Did she think they were a statement piece i.e. sustainable hippy chic or scarecrow-wear?

😂 hmm possibly! I just found out my mother received the same gift but she isn’t wearing them either….

Anuta77 · 26/12/2023 02:48

Hahaha
I got a keychain with my age for my birthday last year, among other things. And some metal charms, Im not sure why he thought it was a good idea, I dont do these things. So a periscope doesnt sound so bad, you could look at the sky, why not?

JANEY205 · 26/12/2023 02:31

This is why we now choose our own gifts and then just get each other something small as a surprise! My husband got me amazing shortbread, hand cream, luxury jam I love and the chocolates I like and I got him a book he wanted. Otherwise we only buy for our kids now! I send the grandparents small token things from our gifts and we treat them throughout the year. Really takes the stress and hassle out of Christmas and saves on shit gifts, tho I’d tell my husband and be fuming if he got me some of these…gum from the garage and an e cigarette?! Wtaf?!

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 26/12/2023 02:21

It's actually quite easy to make your own periscope with nothing more than a few pieces of plywood, nails, a drill for the holes and two small face mirrors.

Frances0911 · 26/12/2023 02:20

Is he being a bit of a cheapskate and bought you something that he actually wants?

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 26/12/2023 02:13

Had you ever expressed a desire to surreptitiously look around corners?

Mothership4two · 26/12/2023 01:58

When I came onto this thread I was not expecting a periscope. It's so bad it's almost good. It made me laugh - sorry OP! Is there anything particularly interesting to see out of the skylight?

My son, bless his cotton socks, has given me a very thick high necked jumper. It has quite a nice pattern, but I never wear jumpers. It's a bit of a family joke how I only wear tshirts or shirts and DH will be next to me in a massive fleece or jumper. I don't feel the cold and get uncomfortable if it's too warm - other DS is the same. I will probably wear this jumper once or twice when DS is around. It's 50% recycled polyester. I think he saw that and thought "well Mum's a bit green, she'll like it"!

One of my Mum's present was PJs one size too small. Last year she got me a pair of spanks. She did give me other nice things.

PringPring · 26/12/2023 01:40

I had one present under the tree that I'd not wrapped for myself. It was a very uninspired chocolate item you can buy cheaply from any supermarket. This was from a close relative and there's past form there for me buying them generous thoughtful gifts that I put time into, and them being almost passive aggressive in getting me something really thoughtless (or sometimes nothing at all, or they make a big fuss of that a gift will be late and then it's a let down type of gift). I think next year I'm going to suggest we skip getting each other presents as it just hurts every time. It's like they use each birthday and Xmas to show how little they think of me in a sly way. 😔

PringPring · 26/12/2023 01:35

@Pennythoughts28 that's really crappy of him. I'm shocked he doesn't normally contribute to Christmas. Seems putting a boundary there has shown his true colours loud and proud. What a tool! 😡

Pennythoughts28 · 26/12/2023 01:02

I don't mean to sound ungrateful but I actually went to bed after we opened the presents for half hour because I was upset my partner of 16 years who normally buys me expensive perfume and beautiful jewellery and PJ's and books he knew I would read bought me a ecig and chewing gum from corner shop a pair of socks and a lined book from home bargains this was after I literally showered him with gift after gift , I think I'm being punished because I asked him this year to contribute money to the kids presents and clothes dinner ect normally he gets away with it 😐 it's been long time coming and i think I'm done , it's not just because of the gifts giving its because i know im being punished somewhat because i out my foot down and said i needed him to contribute something , i just felt like a absolute idiot after opening them tbh ,

Shaunthesleep · 26/12/2023 00:47

My husband got me SEVEN (individual) pairs of socks that don't fit. Despite my helpfulness of providing a wish list.

Women's socks don't fit me as I'm very tall and have proportionate feet, so I wear men's.

I especially can't wear slippers socks as they are super snug. He proudly presented three pairs "because he's not seen me wear mine and thought I needed new".

His face when I said no, they just don't fit like the pair last year, and the year before and I've told you multiple times.

Still. Beats the year he said he'd seen an electric blanket in Lidl and I in no uncertain terms said do not buy me that. He did. 😂

TerrysNeapolitan · 26/12/2023 00:47

Are you a Submariner OP?

itsnotmeitsu · 26/12/2023 00:45

I got socks with the dog's face on them. They came all the way from America apparently. My husband said he'd made three attempts with the picture because, once cropped, the dog's head was missing. He said, 'You wouldn't have liked that would you?' Me, 'Uh, no ...'. If I had a periscope I'd be checking what the two of them are up to when they think I'm not looking.

I have a December birthday, and a couple of years ago MIL got me an iron for my birthday and an ironing board for Christmas.

Sorry this took me out 😂😂😂😂😩😩

thedementedelf · 26/12/2023 00:40

I got a muffin tray. I don't bake and have never baked. I don't like muffins so I've no idea why I got a muffin tray.
