To ask who you tip at Christmas and how much?

Inspired by another thread.

Postie?
Hairdresser?
Cleaner?
Window cleaner?
Gardener?

Anyone else? Do you tip people who are in any way friends even if you pay them for a service? Do you give gifts rather than money?

Window cleaner - a tenner but only because they came yesterday, I don’t usually see them and it’s different people every time but I was just sorting some cash out for godchildren and thought I’d take it out and say thanks.
cleaner - £100
hairdresser - tip £10 every time I go, don’t make a specific Christmas trip.
binmen - £10 taped to a box of beers to say thanks for taking our extra rubbish 🫣

No Christmas bonus for me!

F1ymetothetoon · 17/12/2023 19:21

@Flamesatmytoes Thank you! Fortunately I'm retired from all that now. Happy Christmas to you and your family 🎄

This seems to be about how much money people have. 50 quid for bin men! How do people afford this?!

Dunno. It seems a bit random, though. Some people never get tipped. Bin men and posties seem to do well. Cashiers and shelf stackers not so much. Maybe the bin men tip the shelf stackers?

Chimmo · 17/12/2023 19:20

I don’t tip.

muddlingthrou · 17/12/2023 19:18

Dog walker and childminder - £50 each. Whether you want to call it a bonus or a tip 🤷🏽‍♀️

saraclara · 17/12/2023 19:17

Only my cleaner, who gets an extra session's pay. My bin men are as grumpy as hell and the postie changes every few weeks.

I've stopped tipping my hairdresser because she and her DH have money to burn and every time I go she's boasting about something else they've bought or spent money on that I couldn't afford in a month of Sundays. Oh, and she not so subtly puts down my budget choices. Fuck that.

LaChienneDesFromages · 17/12/2023 19:17

I’ve never had a Christmas bonus as I worked in the public sector and now work freelance. DH has never had a Christmas bonus (law firm, now partner.) We don’t tip with money anyone who provides a service for us as it’s not a practice I especially like.

I do buy a decent bottle of fizz/chocolates for our dog walker, tutors, teachers, handyman and cleaner and write a nice card. They all charge decent rates for their services which we pay promptly.

Our cleaner is legitimately employed by us for two days a week. In previous roles, she’s been expected to be ‘self employed’, which sucks. She gets sick pay, holiday pay and other benefits of employment. This feels fairer for her than a couple of hundred quid stuck in an envelope at Christmas.

Lovelynames123 · 17/12/2023 19:16

I routinely tip anyway so probably just give a bit more at Xmas. My staff love getting tips, we always get more in December plus tubs of sweets from regular customers. We share out the tips on the 23rd, plus we'll give staff a cash bonus plus a bottle of something, to show our appreciation of them.

OhmygodDont · 17/12/2023 19:13

Nobody ever. We have minimum wage. I don’t get tipped for doing a job that’s means many other people can do their jobs.

Missingmyusername · 17/12/2023 19:13

Refuse staff £50 - I work for the local authority so they know us. They will come and get our bins, we don’t put them out.
Hairdresser bottle vodka.
Gardener bottle whisky.
Window cleaner nothing because they don’t do a great job.
Don't have a cleaner.
Dog groomer bottle of wine, chocolates and flowers because she is lovely.
Teachers flowers and candle.

@Flamesatmytoes you seem to be in a very fortunate financial position and I'm happy for you. In my old job working in job centre/benefit office a bonus for me would be not to be called a fucking cunt or fucking bitch in the week before Christmas 😂

Yeah, that’s pretty shit. I hope you get a quiet Christmas season.

Cadenza12 · 17/12/2023 19:11

Btw public sector workers get holiday, sick pay and pensions. A lot of these jobs don't come with these as standard. I remember one delivery guy was nearly dead on his feet, said not only did he not get paid he got fined if he didn't turn up. Supermarket delivery people don't get paid extra if they are late back, so stuck in traffic is just their bad luck.

MollyButton · 17/12/2023 19:10

I'm public sector but deal with a lot of private sector people - and I can assure you most people do not get a bonus at all.
And I don't tip anyone - most of them earn more than me anyway.

Maireas · 17/12/2023 19:09

enchantedsquirrelwood · 17/12/2023 19:08

Do none of you not get a bonus at work not at Christmas, no.

And I am too working class to have "staff" like a cleaner (or gardener). I do my own cleaning, and DH does the gardening. I don't give him a tip Grin

Not ever!

Flamesatmytoes · 17/12/2023 19:09

Maireas · 17/12/2023 18:59

Right, so it's a bonus rather than a tip, isn't it?
It's all strange to me, being public sector.
I personally don't like the culture of tipping because I do think it means that some employers keep wages low.

Well I pay all of them, so bonus, tip all that matters is they get extra. I call it a bonus as tip means small (to me), but it’s linked to Xmas. I give my office team another bonus at Easter too, but more modest.

My team def earn above market rate, they are above average. Again, no pay scale constraints so it’s up to me.

Honestly, I try to be a good employer. My cleaner now runs her own business, but she still comes to me, I’m her only cleaning gig.

SallyWD · 17/12/2023 19:09

I gave my hairdresser a bigger tip than usual (£10). We have three cleaners who come together and I'll tip them £20 and a box of chocolates each.
I've never tipped the postman. I don't even know what he/she looks like. They always seem to be changing.

Gift to hairdresser and beautician
2 weeks pay to cleaner

DataColour · 17/12/2023 19:04

I give the piano teacher a bottle of wine, that's it! No cleaner/ gardener etc. oh I gave a big box of Ferraro Rocher to the lovely lady who runs an amazing creative art workshop for teens which my DD attends.

I have no clue who our bin men or postman is.... I'm not there when they come.

Flamesatmytoes · 17/12/2023 19:04

VickyEadieofThigh · 17/12/2023 18:59

As I was a teacher - no.

What's your point?

Well I suppose I was thinking ‘private sector’, where bonus’ are common. The thread just had no, no, no, and I was surprised as bonus/tip is normal to me.

I was quick to surprise, but yes public sector, not even a Xmas party paid. Not my world but this has reminded me.
