To sneak McD's into the cinema

fr4zzledmum · 09/12/2023 16:03

Going to a tea time showing tonight - McD's is right next door to the cinema so was just going to buy DC a Happy Meal and pop it in my bag to eat when we get in there.

Cheaper than a hot dog at the cinema. I don't think it's particularly a bother smell wise, as people have nachos and hot dogs etc.

This thread is hilarious 🤣

Since when did McDonald’s smell bad ffs this thread has confirmed that people just like to be awkward on mumsnet because anything can cause such an ordeal 😂😂😂

It does smell bad to many people, myself included. Is it about being awkward or considerate? In your case, awkward as long as you're ok.

It doesn’t necessarily smell bad, but you shouldn’t eat hot, smelly food in the cinema. It’s just common sense and basic good manners that most civilised people understand.

I like these!

How exactly would you be 'sneaking 'something that absolutely stinks and is noisy to eat?
Don't be that person.

Drug dealing a great British hobby 😂

And having sex stop it this is so funny.

I think, just maybe, that guide was put together with the view of conveying a more serious message in a humorous way. Kind of assumed that was obvious.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 10/12/2023 09:59

I think McDs does smell more than the food they sell at the cinema- but I also don’t think hot food should be going in at all. I think giving yourselves time to eat first is the answer! The adverts and trailers take enough time to eat a McDs!

Bringing your own popcorn or sweets is totally fine in my view though.

Not really, just because you have no issue with Maccie D smells at the cinema does not mean everyone else who does are 'wrong'. I quite like the smell of garlic when I walk into a French or Italian restaurant, does not mean I particularly want to smell it in the cinema. Time and a place and all that.

Princessandthepea0 · 10/12/2023 09:56

Not it’s chavvy and selfish. Most cinemas don’t allow hot food because of safety, cleanliness and smells, I’d love to know what cinemas have hot nachos and hotdogs.

I've done this before and been in the cinema many times when others have done it. Totally fine.

It really isn't.

Perfectlystill · 10/12/2023 09:31

McDonald's absolutely stinks. I think this would be really anti social behaviour.

Well, the large Odeon chain is very clear. It names some branches where you can’t bring in any food from outside. And of those that do allow it:

“We do not allow the following to be brought in from outside the cinema:

  • Heated food
  • Pungent food
  • Alcoholic drinks”

Assuming this is to me, nobody is disputing that many cinemas ban hot food not purchased at the actual cinema from being taken in. But in this post:

you seemed to be doubting that any food at all was allowed into the viewing area, when you said But you don’t do the eating in the actual screening. My local cinema has a very popular bar and cafe-restaurant. You eat there first, or later, not during the actual film. You would be escorted out, I think, but I’ve never seen anyone do it. in response to someone saying that the cinema made most of its money by selling food rather than tickets.

McDonalds really smells. I hate it when someone gets on the train with one, but then I’m only on the train for 10mins. Would hate it for 2+ hours.

Yes, it’s a horrible smell. It’s weird nowadays that people can’t go for a few hours without eating.

Transport, cinemas etc - they are like cows, constantly needing to chew the cud.🙄

This thread is so weird.

Surely if a Happy Meal is a treat that means the child normally doesn't eat them. They are a treat for me and I haven't eaten one for over two years.

I only eat sweets in the Cinema (and have done for more years than most of you have been alive) and can remember we never took sweets with rattly wrapping. However given the volume of the soundtrack these days I don't think that would be an issue. I accept the selling of overpriced food keeps the film prices down

We only go to the Cinemas with the luxury seats so there's room for people to pass without everyone standing up, not like the old days of tip up seats. And if you book on line it's possible to have almost zero interaction with any of the rare members of staff.

BadLad · 10/12/2023 08:31

WashItTomorrow · 10/12/2023 07:58

I’ve never come across that, and I go to the cinema a lot.

It is extremely common, and you will certainly come across it if you go to other cinemas in future, especially large chains.

WalnutBlue · 10/12/2023 08:16

@confusedbythesystem

Your issue should be with the cinema that promotes the sale of food rather than the audience.
I will continue to eat in the cinema as long as they allow it. Also next time I will make sure to bring something extra smelly. 😂

Londonrach1 · 10/12/2023 08:03

Not McDonald's as you can smell it. But anything that doesn't smell

confusedbythesystem · 10/12/2023 08:02

Nanaof1 · 10/12/2023 07:16

That already exists. It's called a large screen tv in your own home. You can ban everything you dislike there.

Er no, home is where you eat your McDonalds in front of the TV (if that's your thing). In a cinema or theatre you show consideration to others so everyone can enjoy the performance.

WashItTomorrow · 10/12/2023 07:58

BadLad · 10/12/2023 07:31

Well, in many cinemas you do actually eat the food during the actual screening.

@soemptyinside

With the cinema, you're paying for your seat to watch a film. You don't have to eat or drink.

With McDonalds, you're paying for your seat to eat food. Eating and drinking is kinda the point. So, no, I don't see the issue with bringing food to the cinema... as long as the food doesn't impact the other customers.

Do you not realise that the ticket prices for the non eaters/drinkers are essentially subsidised by the people who eat and drink?

The food and drink sales make up a huge amount of the revenue that they take in, if they weren't selling that then ticket prices would increase massively and/or lots of cinemas would have no option but to close.

Watching the movie AND eating and drinking is kind of the point. Most cinemas would not survive if the business model was just about selling seats to watch a movie.

Edited
