To think encouraging people to send chocolate secretly is not a good idea?

So Cadbury do this thing where you can send chocolate anonymously to someone. AIBU to think this is not something to be encouraged? I'd be disturbed receiving unexpected chocolate to my home address.

I would only send Cadbury chocolate to someone I really hated

Pinkpinkpink15 · 17/11/2023 23:26

wokbun · 17/11/2023 21:12

If they were anonymous then yes. Yes I would

but anyone can send anything anonymously any time they want?!?!

ExplodingSmittens · 17/11/2023 22:45

The DDog chews most of our mail. If she got hold of a bar of Chocolate she's probably eat that.

I be fuming if the gift was anonymous as I wouldn't know where to send the rather large Vet's Bill.

CrapBucket · 17/11/2023 21:40

I find it wierd. I don’t like people having secrets that involve me. Creeps me out and feels patronising.

This. I've recently found out that a colleague has been sabotaging my work for years and I've gone to my line management over it. If mystery chocolate turned up at my house, I'd think he'd somehow got my address and was doing it to unnerve me in a "I know where you live" kind of way.

jemenfous37 · 17/11/2023 22:42

@Queucumber Noooooooooo! Yukky! 😊😊

Womencanlift · 17/11/2023 22:35

wokbun · 17/11/2023 21:02

Exactly. I don't think Cadbury should be encouraging it.

Well this isn’t the first year they have done it so I assume it was successful previously and most people are just taking it as the light hearted gesture that it is

wokbun Would you freak out if interflora delivered flower, after all they have been doing this for half a century and we all find that normal and don't lose the plot.

I would honestly lose my shit if someone sent anonymous flowers. I'd be agonising trying to think of who it could be and paranoid that I had a stalker.

If it had a card on saying who the sender was, I'd find a jug for them.

It's the anonymity that's scary, especially for a woman living alone.

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 17/11/2023 22:30

OhpoorMe · 17/11/2023 13:02

But on that basis we should also stop the marketing campaigns for:

Interflora
Moonpig
Hotel Chocolat

Etc etc. All prompt you to send gifts, especially romantic ones

With all those companies, the sender's name is on the little card with the package.

Winnipeggy · 17/11/2023 22:18

Write a post on Facebook telling everyone you know that you absolutely don't want anonymous chocolate. That should sort it out. Don't take it away from the rest of us though.

myotherkidisacassowary · 17/11/2023 21:42

I think I must have lived a very unexciting life because it wouldn’t occur to me that this could be sinister 🤣

I'd bin it if no idea who'd sent it or what their intentions were.

There was a man in rural New Zealand who died after drinking wine left for him in his letterbox. It had been laced with weedkiller. The murderer has not been found.

Fair enough, but I’m guess Cadbury’s will probably reject any request to lace the chocolate with weedkiller before they send it.

You do know the person doing the sending never actually sees or has contact with what is being sent?

Normally it would be creepy if out of the blues but knowing that there's a public campaign going on about it and it's coming straight from the company, then it isn't an issue. It would be fun trying to figure out who sent it.

Someone should send me some chocs please!

Tin foil hat on because OP got me thinking: I hope they won't be doing any data collection stuff with people's addresses though.

Tin foil hat off.

Yes great fun wondering if its that creepy guy you once worked with who someone got your address.

Also agree re data collection but I imagine they can't do that.

You're going to FREAK OUT when you find out about Valentine's day.

I don't think Valentine's cards should be anonymous either

wokbun · 17/11/2023 21:14

All these posters saying YABU it's harmless it's fun it's chocolate (unless you have a stalker/abusive ex etc). That is EXACTLY my point. So many women will have recieved unwanted contact that I just find the concept of encouraging people to mail anything to someone else anonymously disturbing.

@IncompleteSenten this is my point - like you saidThat said, I think if someone who has been stalked or is being stalked or someone who's fled an abusive ex etc gets it they are going to be bloody scared and upset and worried that the person has found them

Surely you could order anything online anonymously though? Or someone could go to Tesco and leave a bar of chocolate outside your door or on your car anonymously? Where does it end!

You could. But that doesn't mean Cadbury need to be selling it as a jolly good idea

I really do wonder how people get through life! Of all the things to get your knickers in a twist, someone who knows your address and pays to send you a present is not one of them!
Even if Cadburys is not your favourite chocolate, how can it be creepy?
Get a bloody grip

Ever heard of stalkers?

TryAgainWithFeeling · 17/11/2023 11:56

I can see why, if you have backstory with a stalker, weird jealous ex, etc, then receiving anything anonymously would be creepy. But otherwise…no.

Yes these are the scenarios I'm thinking of

BarbaraCadabra · 17/11/2023 11:45

I'm with you @wokbun , I feel uneasy when I see those adverts but I have received anonymous gifts and other creepy behaviours.

Thank you. Yes I think maybe it depends if you've already experienced the anonymous gift/creepy scenario.

Yes its chocolate, yes chocolate is nice but that doesn't make this a frivolous thing to do.

I wouldn't eat food sent to me anonymously or given by someone I don't trust.

Just because they already know my address, doesn't make it less creepy. I'm hoping Cadbury has the details of the sender if anything goes wrong.

I think sending something anonymously to my home or work place is creepy.
If I were fundraising on an online platform and someone sent me a bg anon donation, great. Even a thank you letter and a voucher or a lottery card.. but some items like food, drink, jewellery, gushing letters...personal things are creepy.

Edited

Exactly. I don't think Cadbury should be encouraging it.

You do realise that if someone knows your address, they can (and have always been able to) send you anything anonymously, at any time?

This isn't something that has only been made possible by Cadbury's. Anyone can put some chocolate in a jiffy bag and post it to you anonymously any time they like. Cadbury's haven't enabled anyone to do anything they couldn't already do before.

It will have a post mark on it of the locale in which it is posted.

@Toddlerteaplease

i guess not knowing who sent it?
