To think encouraging people to send chocolate secretly is not a good idea?

So Cadbury do this thing where you can send chocolate anonymously to someone. AIBU to think this is not something to be encouraged? I'd be disturbed receiving unexpected chocolate to my home address.

What's the difference between that and any other gift/flowers?

Fink · 17/11/2023 12:10

I have an ongoing case of harrassment going through the slow legal process at the moment. I still wouldn't have a problem with anonymous chocolate. I would assume it was most likely from someone else, but even if it's from my harrasser - free chocolate! It's not in the league of the 57 phone calls in a day.

I could see it being problematic for people living with abusive partners who would be suspicious of you receiving any kind of post at all and accuse you of an affair. Other than that, I can't see how it could go wrong.

You forget that this is MN, home of whataboutery...

What about all the people who have experienced stalking in the past?

What about all the people with histories of eating disorders?

What about all the people with pets that might snaffle the chocolate while it sits on the doormat and die?

What about all the emetophobes who might eat too much of it and puke all over themselves?

What about the people with life-threatening chocolate allergies?

And so on....

If you met my aunt's dog, you would not consider this to be whatboutery.

I really do wonder how people get through life! Of all the things to get your knickers in a twist, someone who knows your address and pays to send you a present is not one of them!
Even if Cadburys is not your favourite chocolate, how can it be creepy?
Get a bloody grip

Just please make sure the recipient doesn’t have a dog! Even well wrapped, if I was out and a bar of chocolate landed on my doormat it would not last very long at all.

Was just coming on to say that. Although don’t think enough cocoa solids in Cadbury’s to do too
much harm, the resultant probable diarrhoea wouldn’t be fun!

IncompleteSenten · 17/11/2023 12:00

It's chocolate.

I wouldn't give a shit who sent it.

At least if it's coming directly from Cadbury, you know nobody's tampered with the chocolate because I'm sure Cadbury put their marketing shit in it and make it clear it's come from their anonymous gift service.

Making it much safer than random chocolate through the door.

Which I'd still eat.

That said, I think if someone who has been stalked or is being stalked or someone who's fled an abusive ex etc gets it they are going to be bloody scared and upset and worried that the person has found them.

Elastica23 · 17/11/2023 11:58

I'd be fucking delighted.

Pinkitydrinkity0 · 17/11/2023 11:58

Surely you could order anything online anonymously though? Or someone could go to Tesco and leave a bar of chocolate outside your door or on your car anonymously? Where does it end!

Daftapath · 17/11/2023 11:57

Can you send it to yourself?

Asking for a friend

TryAgainWithFeeling · 17/11/2023 11:56

I can see why, if you have backstory with a stalker, weird jealous ex, etc, then receiving anything anonymously would be creepy. But otherwise…no.

erikbloodaxe · 17/11/2023 11:34

Would you freak out if someome knocked your door too.

It's not the same thing at all.

MargaretThursday · 17/11/2023 11:53

Happy to have yours redirected.
I like Borneville fruit and nut if they still do that please.

Stroopwaffels · 17/11/2023 11:53

I wouldn't eat food sent to me anonymously or given by someone I don't trust. Just because they already know my address, doesn't make it less creepy. I'm hoping Cadbury has the details of the sender if anything goes wrong.

What are you anticipating might "go wrong" with someone eating a bar of Dairy Milk? (ordered online, sent direct from teh factory through the post)?

I think sending something anonymously to my home or work place is creepy.
If I were fundraising on an online platform and someone sent me a bg anon donation, great. Even a thank you letter and a voucher or a lottery card.. but some items like food, drink, jewellery, gushing letters...personal things are creepy.

Edited

What do you mean by 'if anything goes wrong'? What could go wrong? Why would Cadbury need the sender's details?

saraclara · 17/11/2023 11:49

I don't like anonymous anything. I'm boringly level headed and will answer my door to anyone. But anonymity unnerves me. If you want to send me a card or a gift, please tell me who it's from.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 17/11/2023 11:48

The three most sinister things you can receive in the post - bullets, anthrax, and Cadbury Fruit & Nut.

😐

Incey · 17/11/2023 11:46

In theory I suppose people could commit covert harassment via chocolate. But if they want to do that there are a million ways to do it already.

I wouldn’t have a problem with this!

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 17/11/2023 11:45

@FloatingLog why wouldn't you eat it? It comes direct from the company not the sender. There's an option to add a message but there's not a please add poison tick box

BarbaraCadabra · 17/11/2023 11:45

I'm with you @wokbun , I feel uneasy when I see those adverts but I have received anonymous gifts and other creepy behaviours.

LostThestral · 17/11/2023 11:45

I love the idea but have no idea where to find one of these posters with the code on to send any
