Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

I've given up on Tesco's specifically because of this.

I got a Nectar card (picked one up in store) to get the Sainsbury's discounts but I'm uncomfortable with the idea of two-tier pricing.

Sainsbury's seem to have replaced their regular offer prices with Nectar Price offers - my understanding is that those big limited-time offers are paid for by the suppliers as a cost of doing business with the big supermarkets. So they're still not costing the supermarket anything, they just get better data on our shopping habits.

I'm slighly surprised that the benefit to the supermarket (getting our data) is worth the cost of administering the system. I'm a 'promiscuous' shopper - mainly use Sainsbury's for the offers and go to Aldi for our other stuff, so I doubt they get much value out of me.

Definitely Lidl. You get all your stuff cheaper. Except it turns to mush before you eat it. Which is ok because you're pre occupied with your canoe and cheap power tools that you didn't need.

Have you ever been tempted by the Lidl branded clothes and shoes? 😂

For anyone who doesn't want loads of apps on their phone, I use the Stocard App that stores all my loyalty cards on.

Google Wallet/G Pay/Apple Pay does the same.

Accruing

The coop card is quite good, it’s a cash back type where you get x amount for every pound you spend - can’t remember the exact amount but it soon adds up if you do your main shop there.

The downside is that prices in my local coop are higher than in Tesco for many things.

I am currently unable to physically walk round a shop so am getting all my shopping online at Tesco so am getting reduced club card prices but obviously I’m not accruing money on my coop card which I used to save to buy alcohol at Christmas!

But you are accepting club card points?

Topee · 31/10/2023 10:21

Boots do it as well now

Onethingatatime23 · 31/10/2023 10:21

Sainsbury's have it now too with Nectar, and Tesco and Sainsbury's are my nearest supermarkets.

I have my Clubcard/Nectar on my phone so never forget them and always get the "discount", but I agree, it's not a customer benefit but an excuse to make more money from some customers, often those who can least afford it, and slightly underhand.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 31/10/2023 10:19

And this is why I shop at Aldi!

None of this shit, just pay the price on the shelf. Plus the checkout is staffed, and it takes half the time of any other shop

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 31/10/2023 10:18

It would be interesting to know how much it costs them in lost sales.......I dont even go in Tesco that often and I've lost count of the number of times I've ended up abandoning my basket or walking out because the app is playing up or WiFi won't connect so I can't use it, I refuse to pay their hugely inflated prices to make normal priced items look like a bargain.

Vitriolinsanity · 31/10/2023 10:18

It also penalises anyone who is under 16, who is of no fixed abode/ temporary accommodation, who is visiting from another country. I can't stand it myself, but it's good because I've just stopped going to the supermarket, and shop locally, our market town has a butcher, baker candlestick maker and greengrocer. Pricing no different anymore to supermarket prices (without the card) and far better quality, so fresh produce actually lasts longer.

DD is Irish at college in London so can’t get the U.K. Tesco app as her phone has an Irish ID or something.
Anyway she has a screenshot of someone else’s card and uses that for the discount.

Vitriolinsanity · 31/10/2023 10:14

My DS and his friends just lied about their ages to get the cards that give meal deal discounts.

Rincol · 31/10/2023 10:14

They can fuck off, Tesco. I hate the way it's marketed as being an opportunity for you to get stuff cheaper when really it's forcing customers to get the damn thing in order to pay a semi reasonable price.

They're all at it now though, Sainsbury's co op and Morrisons as well. Not content with gouging us for the past couple of years (like fuck did the Ukraine/Russia war quadruple the production costs of instant fucking coffee) they now require our data if we want to be slightly less ripped off in the future.

Fuck em. I get a regular fruit and veg box and I've got a decent local butcher and fishmonger. Everything else I can get from savers and the cash and carry. Supermarkets have made what was always going to be a shitty couple of years ten times shittier than it might have been.

EarringsandLipstick · 31/10/2023 10:12

Doris86 · 31/10/2023 09:55

I hate this too. All they do is overinflate the prices, and then give a clubcard ‘discount’ which makes it the same as the normal price you would pay in any other shop.

I avoid Tesco for this reason, and stick to the shops that just state the price without any of this fake discount BS.

Definitely not the case where I am in Dublin. The price is significantly cheaper. The issue can be that I'm tempted to buy things I don't actually need (obviously what the supermarket wants!)

Coffeerum · 31/10/2023 10:12

BananaSlug · 31/10/2023 09:50

That’s fine but I can still get the offers without needing a card unlike Tesco where you need the card or pay full price.

You can't though because they give additional money back via their app which is basically the same principle as Tesco. Don't have the card - pay more. It is the same for both.

Doris86 · 31/10/2023 10:11

I remember a similar thread a couple of years ago, with most people defending clubcard pricing and seeming to think the discounts were genuine.

The tide now seems to have turned, with the majority of posters here realising the discounts are fake, and that it is just underhanded trickery. Possibly largely because of the recent Which report which concluded this was the case.

So you have to wonder how long the clubcard price con continues, before popular opinion forces Tesco to abandon it.

EarringsandLipstick · 31/10/2023 10:11

TheYearOfSmallThings · 31/10/2023 09:49

I agree. I think the price should be the price, to all shoppers equally. It's just another layer of bullshit we have to deal with.

It's not though.

It's an incentive for shoppers. Yes, it gives lots of data to businesses but it also offers the opportunity of some discount, depending on your shopping preference. .

mikado1 · 31/10/2023 10:11

BeeDavis · 31/10/2023 10:09

whoever’s card it is they scan will be laughing 🤣🤣🤣

They just ask a nearby shopper who is quite happy to get the points! I had the keyring thing but it fell off so now I've not got mine.

Digimoor · 31/10/2023 10:10

Sainsburys is the worst imho - nectar pricing and then additional discounts only if you use the phone app to self scan

EarringsandLipstick · 31/10/2023 10:09

Fahbeep · 31/10/2023 09:48

Went to Lidl instead. Next door. So.
Much. Easier. Every day low pricing so not as hard to work out. Bag of gala apples 6p cheaper than in Tesco on Clubcard. Tesco wanted 95p from the faithful, almost twice that from everyone else. Lidl wanted 85p from everyone! I just think Tesco is stuck in the 90s taking customers for granted with its oversized stores and fake promotions.

Rant over! I know I am YABU. Tesco just gives me the supermarket ick!

So ... personal choice.

I really don't like Lidl & Aldi. Some stuff is fine. Their meat is revolting. And they just don't have the range of products I need.

I don't buy much processed food - I think it's good for these.

I'm in Ireland so I go to Dunnes Stores. It's not the cheapest but its voucher scheme (get €10 off €50, €5 off €25) brings my shop down by €60 a week & makes a huge difference. It's still dependent on people shopping there each week (vouchers only last 10 days so you need to time your shops & purchases to get max value). It's the same as benefiting from lower offers with a Clubcard.

If neither appeals, then don't do it & stick with the likes of Lidl & Aldi but I don't see why you'd complain.

BeeDavis · 31/10/2023 10:09

mikado1 · 31/10/2023 09:21

She said if you don't have it handy, it causes a palaver! My local Tesco is very good, the staff just get another card and scan it so you still get the cheaper price.

whoever’s card it is they scan will be laughing 🤣🤣🤣

WeighDownOnMe · 31/10/2023 10:09

Hate it all you want, Tesco is genius at mass data and has been for a few decades.

I suppose it depends if you're willing to trade the discount to let them know you regularly buy carrots and shampoo.

^this...just goes to show they are profiteering, they obv make money on the lower pricing.

Like all supermarkets, making huge profits as they pushed up inflation, bit like the banks really, no wonder inflation is "sticky" its a get rich quick scheme for business.

LubaLuca · 31/10/2023 10:05

How is getting your card scanned - which takes a few seconds - a "massive palaver at the tills"?

A troupe of dancers and a marching band comes out every time someone scans a Clubcard in our big Tesco. Don't they do that in all stores?
