To think it’s never ok to smoke weed in the house when there are children

Xanders · 27/10/2023 11:47

So my next door neighbours who I cannot stand for a number of (justified) reasons smoke weed inside their house. They have 3 young children and they don’t see the problem. I had to speak to them about it because our houses are semi detached and the smell comes through to our house. We both live in social housing and the walls are like paper and the workmanship eg plaster boards cracks in walls is absolute tosh so hence the smell coming through to our house. After me and dh speaking to them several times about the weed and them ignoring our polite request to smoke it in the garden I decided to do report them to the HA. Things then settled and we had six glorious months without having to endure the foul smell but the last few weeks my neighbours have started up again. AIBU to consider reporting them again? My dh also thinks we should report to social services but I think it’s one thing reporting it to housing to which we received no back lash from our neighbours, but I can guarantee if we were to report it social services it would be a different story. Not sure what to do but all I know is i don’t want to smell that crap in my house and I don’t want my kids to have to breathe it in.

Is it also not OK to drink alcohol?

If Alcohol is fine, then why is cannabis (which scores lower than alcohol on indices for harm to the individual and harm to others) not?

I don't smoke (or otherwise consume) cannabis, but people who think it's wrong generally do so because of circular logic: it must be bad because it's illegal; and it has to be illegal because it's bad.

I don’t think alcohol is fine. I think it should be illegal too actually.

LemonPeonies · 30/10/2023 16:57

The pp's questioning what passive smoking weed does to children, think about what happens if you're in the same room/ house as someone smoking it, you breathe it in and it affects you by second hand smoking. Not just your lungs but your brain, I've been at parties when younger and got high from people smoking it around me, it damages healthy adult brains so is obviously going to cause worse damage to young developing brains. SS should do something about it.

Maddy70 · 30/10/2023 16:48

Well its smoking in general that shouldn't occur indoors with children.

The difference is obvious.

One is a liquid you drink, one is a substance you smoke.

If they're making brownies you might - might have a point.

I don't personally think consuming illegal substances in front of young children is ok.

I don't drink myself.

Because it is entirely possible to have one glass of wine on the vicinity of your child and for it to have no adverse impact on your child whatsoever

where just one spliff in the vicinity of your child will be inhaled by them.

Do you see the difference now?

You sentence is too long.

”It’s not okay to smoke weed.”

FTFY.

I am also of the understanding social services don't interfere over cannabis.
So much bullshit about this on this thread. Social will definitely not "do nothing" about it. I know a single dad who recently lost his daughter because of his weed smoking. It's not even that addictive but apparently it was more important to him then his own daughter”

Exactly this. Know of the same situation where mum has been given full custody (child previously lived with dad).

When I think of weed and kids I think of this:

I was at a house where a small cannabis grow was set up. Tiny grow for personal use. The grow was in the upstairs main bedroom and stunk the house out. The two parents slept downstairs on the sofa whilst the other bedroom was for their 12 year old son. The son begged for the plants to be removed as his clothes smelled and his house did and he was desperate to brings his school friends home to play but was too embarrassed. I felt so sorry for that boy having to live with that.

I won’t go into further info about what happened but I felt so bad for that boy at that moment.

My DH and I both use weed. We don't smoke it, we have vapes and I make edibles. DH will vape every night before bed as it helps him sleep. I usually only use it at weekends. Always when the kids are in bed. I don't see this as any different to someone having a glass of wine at night.

We both have good jobs, kids are well looked after and have a nice life. The house doesn't smell and we treat it as we would drinking so of course wouldn't drive high.

It's a shame that cannabis is demonised so much because it's associated with jobless stoned bums neglecting their kids, because it does help a lot of people and plenty of people are able to use it without overdoing it.

In this case obviously the OPs neighbours are overdoing it, it's affecting other people and putting people at risk by driving high. It's idiots like this that give weed a bad name.

billyt · 27/10/2023 16:14

Except having a glass of wine is legal.

Too many idiot smoking that stinking shit and not giving a toss about others.

@Xanders you need to report for the children's sake.

Edited

Something being legal or illegal doesn't change whether it's OK or not though.

The reverse should be true (something being OK or not should change whether it's legal) but it doesn't always.

Mydogmybestfriend · 27/10/2023 17:37

You're actually very reasonable because you suggested they smoke in the garden which some will still have an issue with.
If you can speak to them again if not then I would just go full blow

MidnightOnceMore · 27/10/2023 17:23

Xanders · 27/10/2023 11:53

To be honest it’s more I’d just like to understand why anyone would smoke weed around their kids. I just don’t get it. I mean if you really need to smoke it just go outside.

You do understand it - they want to. There's nothing more to understand.

You should report it, to both the HA and to SS.

I didn't hear it from him. I don't think admitting you're such a loser you put weed before your children is "a line" either.
My main point is you see a lot on Mumsnet about "social services don't do anything unless it's really really serious because they're underfunded" but it's just not true in my experience. I used to work in a school and they certainly didn't brush neglected kids under the rug due to lack of funds which is what is claimed every day on mumsnet

No, I agree with you about funding. But unless the weed smoking was causing him to have some extremely serious mental illness and he was refusing to access proper treatment or something along those lines, the child wasn't removed because he smokes weed - and in that case the harm would be due to the consequence of the weed, not the weed itself.

Of course not but the issue was CSC getting involved because someone is smoking weed. I would say unlikely UNLESS there are other factors, eg kids not making it to school, they are dirty and malnourished, reports of them being left alone for extended times, reports of physical chastisement etc.

VisitationRights · 27/10/2023 17:04

SS will not intervene for pot use. We had a concern about a child with other behaviour issues that were getting worse about the time he started coming in to school smelling of pot ever day. 7 years old and SS said that there were no concerns as he was clean, fed, was allowed to play, and went to school.

I would say there are other issues going on than just smoking weed if this happened. Possibly some sort of neglect?

notacooldad · 27/10/2023 16:58

I work in children’s social care. So many of our families and their teenagers smoke weed. The social workers can only give advice, in my experience. The police aren’t bothered. Even when the police have attended CP meetings and weed use is mentioned it’s just talked about in a matter of fact way and the other issues are focussed on.

Dani2206 · 27/10/2023 16:58

For ppl saying report to ss
They dont do anything and this happens constantly all the time in the area i live in
As wel as heroin crack use
Be thank ful someone people dnt have to see this on a daily basis in there wonderful neighbourhoods !

I knew the op would slither off when we pulled her up about the fact she knows these people are driving whilst under the influence and smoking weed around their 3 children - yet has no intention of actively doing anything about it beyond navel gazing about what to do about her irritation at the smoke here children may be inhaling

Obviously you've never experienced having an actual nightmare neighbour, yes it's Bad those children are constantly inhaling weed but why downplay ops concerns about repercussions? You've never had a brick lobbed through your window? Your own children targeted because of it? And worse.

Goldmember · 27/10/2023 16:44

And there are plenty of idiots drinking too much as well. Far more problems cause by alcohol than weed. A stoner is less likely to start drama and is only really a threat to a multipack of crisps.

NOT if the stoner in question then drives a vehicle.

Which is the case with these stoners
