AIBU to take granddaughter to hospital this evening or will it wait?

She's been having headaches regularly this year. She describes pounding and pain in eye. GP said eye test - optician immediately said that she could see a large prescription. DG had glasses then three months later had another checkup and a stronger pair prescribed. She's due back in December. So I'm assuming that they're increasing the strength of the glasses in increments.

Her headaches have persisted. This current one she's had since last Friday. I picked her up from school on Monday and could tell that each footstep was making her wince with pain. She couldn't sleep Monday night because of pain and feeling sick. We've been alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen for pain relief. Saw GP on Tuesday who said it was nothing sinister but was referring her to paediatrician. This evening she was complaining of eye and nose pain and appeared to be light sensitive. She's woken in pain a couple of hours after she went to bed and her eyelid is drooping.

Is this worth a trip to A&E?

We're very worried.

@nocoolnamesleft thank you but I’m not a clinician. My exact post said “this can’t be real”. I had genuine doubts as it seems crazy that a child in pain with horrific symptoms isn’t being treated seriously. I didn’t say the OP was a liar

I remember France being navy blue!

No it's more of a cornflower blue.

Lougle · 14/10/2023 22:28

@MyOtherCarIsAPorsche I feel like reporting your post because you're justifying yourself to total strangers. Stop! You don't ever need to justify yourself. Your DD is amazing because she has you as her example.

I don't know what to suggest. You can't do what you can't do 😥

I did not call you a liar at all!!

I saw Dita73's post. She did not call the OP a liar. I believe it was deleted because she stated she was a clinician, and mumsnet always gets a bit twitchy about directly stating that (though many of us hint).

Mumloveswine · 14/10/2023 22:28

Yes

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 14/10/2023 22:27

We rang 111 Thursday night.

It didn't get us anywhere!

OP I am so so sorry your family is going through all this pain and suffering. I hope you all find the answers you are seeking. Sending all my best wishes to you and your family and to the people who are having a go; i truly hope you know how your words can really hurt people

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 14/10/2023 22:26

I'm bloody hysterical at the moment.

BerriesNutsConkers · 14/10/2023 22:21

I recognise you from your previous threads. You have a huge amount on your plate but your granddaughter needs urgent medical attention and that needs to be the highest priority right now.

pashminadreamer · 14/10/2023 21:48

Is your daughter happy to leave her child like this?

No.

She's not happy at all.

And your post made me cry.

We've seen three different professional people within the last five days.

Tuesday, Friday, Saturday.

This is a nightmare.

@Dita73

There is a poster on here (Mumsnet) who knows me (not this particular thread). She knows I'm telling the truth.

@Lougle recognises me from other threads 🥰

My daughter's children are all waiting for ASD assessment. Her oldest is having a nine day headache. Her son who is 4 in January is non speaking and has recently lost a significant amount of weight because he is refusing food. Her youngest son who is three next month has global development delay, he does not speak, he has seizures and on Monday he is having eeg wires attached to his head until Wednesday. There will be cctv monitors throughout the house which will record him. He had two seizures at nursery this week.

Their mother is an amazing woman who exists on next to no sleep and still manages to turn up at work. She is the best mum and I admire her no end. She spent this evening decorating her immaculate house with Halloween decorations for the children to see in the morning.

My husband had an aortic dissection last year and a paramedic refused to transfer him to the Yorkshire and Humber centre for excellence for specialist surgery because they didn't know how to work the equipment which was keeping him alive. This is when I had the support of a true angel on here.

I am at our static caravan in the north because my husband is absolutely livid that I haven't been here with him since April (his personality changed after his extensive surgery). The reason I haven't been here is because I was told my mother was dying. I was with her every day until she died at the end of August. Her funeral was in September. So I am here, now, for the time being in order to see a bloody sheep show that I'm not interested in whatsoever - it was crap by the way. It was the same last year - I couldn't get here because my younger daughter was expecting twins and could go into labour at any time. The twins are now 1 yr and need shoes - another thread.

I didn't want to come here Theo's weekend because my granddaughter has been in hospital recently because of this strange nine day headache. In the last five days she has seen the GP a paediatrician and an optician. None of whom seem to think this is serious. Where's the trust? None of them seemed to have believed myself or my daughter. I'm 3 hours away. There's no one to look after my daughter's other children.

We're supposed to be home Monday. My brain damaged husband thinks our granddaughter has migraine as that's what the paediatrician said in the early hours of Friday morning.

I love my children. I love my grandchildren. I love my husband ( who is not the same person I married since his surgery).

I do not lie.

I have relied heavily on the support from lovely mumsnetters over the last couple of years and the vast majority are supportive and helpful and wonderful.

Is don't know who reported your comment.

But other mumsnetters - she called me a liar.

Yes. Go!

nocoolnamesleft · 14/10/2023 22:10

She does indeed need seeing tonight.
Worsening headache
Eyelid drooping
Headache on waking
New onset double vision
Falling over

TimeToChange23 · 14/10/2023 22:04

My young niece had a brain tumour and the symptoms were extremely similar to the ones you are describing.

Eye drooping, nausea, stumbling and headaches.

I would return to A and E tonight / very early tomorrow and explain the worsening neurological symptoms and please don’t leave without a scan.

Curlywurlywoooo · 14/10/2023 22:04

Agree she needs to be seen again and push for a scan. It would be very unusual for a migraine to last this long so she needs a scan

IAmHeartless · 14/10/2023 22:02

No offence to those talking about Irlens and other non serious diagnosis. The only course of action tonight is a minimum of 111, who will advise hospital. Headache waking her up from sleep asking for pain relief is worrying, but new double vision and falling today needs seeing tonight. Now. Go.
No poster can reassure that it is something else until she has been seen by a doctor tonight. Not all brain issues give vision changes.

Please if you do nothing else phone 111, so a medical professional can tell you to get to hospital.

Rollinghill · 14/10/2023 22:01

Please take her back to A+ E urgently or get a scan privately if that's possible. Her symptoms have changed. Say specifically that you would like her scanned to rule out brain tumor. Ask for it to be documented in the notes that you have asked for this. Ex-neuro nurse.

Notcookie · 14/10/2023 21:59

You cannot trust doctors. Something is wrong and no one is listening to you. Take her back to A&E and list all of her symptoms- in fact, write them down and get them to add your list to her notes. Say that you are worried about brain tumours and that she needs an urgent scan. Sometimes you really do have to put pressure on to get them to do the right thing.

If I had listened to doctors both and my two children would be dead. Sometimes you need to be assertive to get proper treatment.

amusedbush · 14/10/2023 21:54

Newuser75 · 14/10/2023 20:04

@amusedbush so sorry to derail but I'm very interested in your mention of irlen syndrome. My son is suspected to have it and currently undergoing assessments.

I have read -as you mentioned- that there is doubt it exists. He also has suspected ASD but has no issue with reading, he is an excellent reader. Can this still be irlen syndrome?

Also can you explain at all (no worries if not) how the coloured glasses/lenses make a difference?

Thanks!

I have always been a voracious reader and tended toward hyperlexic, rather than dyslexic. I could read from a very young age and when I was assessed for dyslexia, I scored on the 86th percentile for (aloud) reading accuracy.

However, my comprehension isn’t great (I can read something and not be able to explain what I’ve just read) and my processing speed scored on the 5th percentile.

When I had my Irlen assessment, the blue lenses increased my reading speed/accuracy by 33%. I don’t know how it works but it makes the writing look more uniform and it doesn’t move around on the page, so I’m less likely to accidentally skip over lines of text or substitute random words.

White paper/screens actually look white when I’m wearing the glasses, and they look horribly bright and yellow when I take them off. DH says the blue overlay on my phone screen looks very obviously blue to him but to me, everything finally looks normal.

Surprisingly, my lenses also make driving feel less frantic/overwhelming and night driving is vastly improved. Lights no longer have dazzling starbursts and it’s much easier to see road markings and the edge of the road/pavement.

Witchdr92456 · 14/10/2023 21:53

Hi hope your granddaughter is alright, but please don’t be fobbed off with she’s fine if they haven’t scanned her. Is there anyway you can go for a private mri they are around £400. I had the exact same thing happen to me which turned out to be a choroid plexus papilloma brain tumour. It was benign but I had to have surgery to remove it. It’s normally found in very young children. Until I was really ill my eye sight was the only indication and I visited the optician every year. Take care and hope you get sorted

pashminadreamer · 14/10/2023 21:48

Is your daughter happy to leave her child like this?

endofthelinefinally · 14/10/2023 21:47

As pp said, she needs to go to Leeds. I can't remember if they still have 2 hospitals or if they are merged now, but you need a decent teaching hospital with a paediatric A&E. This sounds dreadful.

Mirabai · 14/10/2023 21:47

It’s perfectly legitimate to go back to A&E if symptoms change. Double vision and falls are more than enough.

thaegumathteth · 14/10/2023 21:46

Maybe the system is wrong but you and her mum are being really passive about the whole thing. Get her to hospital now.
