group mum chat today and we were discussing the birthday parties coming up and Christmas ( they do a class secret Santa ) quite a few were suggesting the girls wanted vouchers for Sephora etc for some face cream routine stuff and some kind of elephant cream 😅 they have just gone in to year 5 so mainly 9 approaching 10.
I was explaining that for DD that she would be happy with any sort of squishy / anime surprise bags / fidget toys / rocks. This was described as unusual ?
I don’t think it’s that unusual - she would not know what Sephora is or the difference in face creams !
will she start to fall behind in what her peers are growing in to ? If I suggested face cream for Christmas she would probably cry 😂😂😂
she is not in to her dolls as much anymore but more like Sanrio character / anime figures / slime / fidgets / art sets / rocks / mini brands / mini verse etc
I don’t remember it being this unusual at this age.

What 13 yr olds can afford drunk elephant?!

None of them, they force their parents to get it.
It's sad.

LuluPandora · 08/10/2023 14:31

Drunk elephant is named after its product made from marula oil (elephants eat the fruit and supposedly get drunk)

Aside from that it is bizarre these children want to use products which are extremely inappropriate and expensive for thier young skin. Growing up far too fast.

Allyliz · 08/10/2023 09:59

Your daughter sounds completely normal the others ate idiots. Value and embrace these years of childhood they pass too quickly...squishing are fab she's got years ahead of face cream and adult gifts you sound like my kind of mum

Saz91x · 07/10/2023 10:42

My daughter has always loved skin care and make up. Not influenced by me but I don’t see it as a problem. She’s creative and it’s another way to be creative. It’s nice she wants to look after her skin. She 12 now but still loves fidgets, squishies and toys though but she’d be happy with either. I can’t say that she wants brands though or really knows about them, just stuff that works and makes her feel nice.
she doesn’t wear make up out though purely to play around with at home

CowboyJoanna · 06/10/2023 16:40

Sounds like normal 9-10 year old things to be honest.

Not every 9 year old is a pretty-witty curly-wurly popular sort of girl in a rush to grow up.

toadasoda · 06/10/2023 16:36

OP everything on your list is what my now 10 yr old is into. I literally would have listed the same stuff. Long may it last!!

Oioicaptain · 06/10/2023 16:23

Let your daughter be whom she wants to be and enjoy what she wants, free from the constraints of ridiculous sheepish marketing. Those women seem to have no confidence and are either bowing down to their daughters who have heard about something on tiktok from their friends that they don't even understand or want, or are petrified about 'holding' them back. Ultimately their daughters will end up chasing more and more expensive products and lifestyles, lining the pockets of marketing companies, whilst struggling to find contentment. I would call out the insecure behaviour of the mother who made that comment. It was extremely rude and vacuous.

It was all about Rimmel Heather Shimmer lipstick and Body Shop Dewberry perfume when I was growing up! At 10 years my DD was not interested in skincare or expensive make up, your daughter sounds like she is interested in age appropriate things. Relish this time and don't worry about what other parents think is normal, they grow up so quickly and there is plenty of time for make up and skin care when they are older. She'll let you know when she is ready to start exploring that world. My DD now 15 loves make up and perfume but is also old enough to understand how much certain brands costs and makes decisions over what she wants to spend her pocket money on and will ask for more expensive items as gifts for birthdays and Christmas.

When I got interested in skin care at around 14 it was Anne French cleansing milk and Boots 17 orange blossom moisturiser. Not high end luxury products.

VeraMay · 06/10/2023 15:07

They are children, let them be children your daughter is not unusual, it's the others that are.

My 10 year old now has a better skin care collection than me! Mini fridge and everything. She loved buying skincare and little organiser's to store it all in!

Possibly a tiktok thing?

I find it weird but seems they are the same as gifts for friends now involve making a goodie bag of lip gloss and face masks!

She did just ask for a new bike though so she still enjoys doing what I wpuld consider normal for her age stuff she just has good skin whilst doing it!

My DD is 15, her group are all into face cream, all sorts of beauty potions, ect ect. DD has zero interest in any of it. and got massively annoyed after spending 3 and a half hours in Boots while her friends deliberated over which of the latest products to buy, but was the rushed out of a bookshop after 10 minutes because the rest were board.
She's since joined the explorer scouts to expand her circle and find more kids that belong to her tribe.
So, no, beauty products aren't for everyone, and certainly not at 9 and 10. Filling their pores with products at that age is going to make their pre teen skin worse than not using anything at all!

She sounds like my dd who is 15 - she'd happily spend hours in a bookshop but any other sort of shop especially make up she'd want to be out in seconds. She loves army cadets and rock climbing- together with ballet, athletics and playing piano/ guitar. It takes all sorts!

Manthide · 06/10/2023 06:14

Dd3 is almost 16 and would probably not be grateful to receive face cream as a present and doesn't wear make up. Many of her friends do of course but we are all different and these differences should be respected. At age 9 or 10 even my older dds who are happy to use face creams etc would have preferred a craft kit etc.

Tryingmybestadhd · 05/10/2023 23:58

Your daughter sounds like mine , a normal kid being a kid . Worrying about face cream routine at 9 is actually sad !

itsagranddayfordrying · 05/10/2023 23:23

My just turned 10 year old asked me to buy her some Drunk Elephant products recently . She also loves slime and squishmallows 🤷‍♀️ she's very into skincare and so am I. I'm glad she's already looking after herself. Can't see the problem , you do you .

BettyBunMaker · 05/10/2023 23:08

Sound like the mums are after a present!

Diamondcurtains · 05/10/2023 23:07

Drunk Elephant cream it’s about £60 🙄

ExcitingTimes2023 · 05/10/2023 22:58

Notagains · 03/10/2023 14:56

I would way a nine year old wanting face cream is very unusual and also very sad.
They are still young children they shouldn't be worrying about face cream!

Exactally! I’m in my 30s and don’t worry about face cream! Bit of Nivea and I’m off x

SherbetDips · 03/10/2023 14:39

She sounds like a Normal 9/10 year old. The only thing I could think a 9/10 year old might want from a shop like that is lip balm or nail polish.

I have a 10 year old daughter and totally agree with this.

ellyeth · 05/10/2023 22:47

I think your child is perfectly normal. I had no idea that young children were hankering after things like face cream. The world has truly gone mad.

Carzo · 05/10/2023 22:05

Sephora? I wouldn't buy it for myself! The only reason my 10 year old knows it is the class Regina George, who's 11, talks about it and her "skin care routine"...and her skin is really bad. And I'd try to avoid giving young children expensive habits!

Feralgremlin · 05/10/2023 22:01

DSD is 10 and in year 6 and would be so disappointed if she got face creams for Christmas! She is really into Pokémon and arts and crafts type stuff, I don’t think she would even know what Sephora is!

I do wonder what the negative effects may be of all these fancy creams on such young skin as well, especially if they are containing chemical exfoliants or retinoids etc, surely it can’t be good for them?!

Let her be herself, she sounds perfectly normal.

Yogirl1 · 05/10/2023 17:50

Hummm…. Sounds like the parents are already drawing up a regift list… with themselves at the top of it!
