To feel desperately sorry for kids leaving state "care"?

I have to admit my ignorance on this, so correct me if I'm wrong.

The more I see on here and read in the news about failings in state care for children, the more appalled I am. It must be absolutely terrifying to be coming up to your 18th birthday, knowing that from then on you're on your own. Imagine sitting your A-levels through that. Living in a hostel, no safety net, no bank of Mum and Dad, no home for the holidays if you go to uni, no one who gives a flying fuck, just you slogging your way to haul yourself into adulthood. Kids are leaving foster placements and children's homes not knowing how to cook, do laundry or manage a budget. WTAF. Kicking kids out at 18 totally unprepared for the world and washing your hands of them isn't care. It shouldn't be up to charities to try to pick up the pieces.

YABU - you have no idea what you're talking about and children leaving care are well supported.

YANBU - it's disgraceful.

Any pointers to campaigns/charities/more info in this area would be welcome too.

I think it’s rubbish.

But also, it’s is life for many not in care. I left as soon as I turned 18, and have never had anyone to support me or house me bar myself. I wasn’t until I met dh that I then had ‘family’ to acknowledge things and share events.

Care leavers in Wales get a guaranteed basic income. It doesn’t help with a lot of your list, and more should be done, but it’s at least a start. Of course a lot of right wingers hate it (especially since unaccompanied asylum seekers fall into the care leaving population once they reach adulthood).

You think they stay in care until 18?

I've taught 16 year olds who are living independently.

And of course their flat / bed sit is where all the other in the class go on a weekend.

I’ve only known one care leaver personally but my god she was failed.
I was furious for her.
