Dogs Everywhere

I don't live in the UK but am just back from a holiday in Cornwall. We were shocked at the amount of dogs allowed everywhere. They were in every restaurant, cafe, pub and hotel. Two or three people with dogs would all go into a small shop, blocking the aisles for everyone else. In Port Isaac on a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon the whole harbour and uphill area was disrupted by loud and continuous barking. Dogs were running around off leash on every beach. People were clogging the narrow pavements with two or three dogs on leads, wheeling dogs around in prams and buggies, stopping outside holiday cottages for ages chatting while their dogs barked, yapped and howled and ruined the peace for the people inside.

We were genuinely wondering if the next time we came back there would be dog and owner spaces in supermarket carparks and an expectation that you should stand up on public transport to let people with dogs sit down.

AIBU to think England has gone a bit mad when it comes to dogs?

We stayed at the Bodmin Jail Hotel last year - there was an option for a sausage for your dog at breakfast . Served on a plate . DDog was delighted . Oddly enough she wasn’t keen on Watergate Bays doggy ice cream - it didn’t taste too bad but less creamy than ‘ human ‘ ice cream .
But yes when sharing public places be mindful of others , appreciate the impact of your dog on others and pick your shit up .

Awwww this is cute x

No, just having fun.

Is that still allowed?

But you're not being funny.

It meant he could have a holiday too

Lots of people are like this. It's so weird to me. What kind of species prefers another species to it's own young? I actually find it quite disturbing when people say they prefer dogs to babies/children

Its mad isnt it. I find it odd that people would enjoy being around other peoples children over dogs. Different strokes for different folks I suppose. But give me dogs any day

Wow. Would seriously suggest that if this smell is following you around. Its you -not the dogs. I've never been in a restaurant that smelt of dog.

Perhaps you're so used to the smell you don't get it anymore.

I love dogs and this is what made me book a break to Cornwall last year. Great I could take him literally everywhere except Wetherspoons who didn't allow dogs. My dog is quiet, no bother and 13 years old, doesn't bark etc. I was so grateful to the places letting him in. It meant he could have a holiday too. Took him to Devon this year - not quite the same vibe

That's subjective though - to you the bark might not be annoying but to others it might be excruciating! Don't get me wrong, I can forgive dogs barking every now and then, it's the ones who yap constantly for no apparent reason and who set of the chain reaction of other yapping. It is annoying.

Didn’t say annoying.

And you don't even have any arguments to start with. So we'll take it you know you're a selfish nuisance and just don't care.

Please feel free to follow up with another yawn. I think we all have your measure.

My dog’s barks are definitely less repetitive that these threads.

I hate dogs. I'm fed up with them in shops and every cafe, pub, restaurant. They eat their own shit and vomit ffs they shouldn't be allowed in cafes etc.

I'm sick of it and they should be banned from shops etc again.

YANBU at all. Far too many dogs in cafes and shops these days. Awful for people with allergies or poor eyesight and a myriad of other reasons.

Dogs are famously pretty useful for people with poor eyesight

Mum2jenny · 17/09/2023 21:15

I am not an unruly dog owner. Most ppl do not even see my dog in a pub as she is tiny and will sleep on my lap. She weighs less than 2.5 kg

Pushpull · 17/09/2023 21:14

I agree and I'm a.dog owner. Many cafes locally are now dog friendly but are filled with owners that let them wander and bark (which I know is the owners fault not the dog but the outcome is the same).

People just seem incapable of using leads properly too. At our local play park dogs with terrible recall are off lead (even with good recall it just isn't the right place - many children are nervous of dogs and behave unpredictably, there are fields and woods behind take them there or keep on lead if you're there with children) I'm sure there are exceptions but also everyone with an extendable lead I come across seems unable to use them and I and my dog (appropriately on a lead) are tangled as fluffy just wants to play. Well mine doesnt do get your dog back.

I find some friends as well want to bring their dogs to our house. Even if they are popping round for coffee. Just leave it at home. I don't want another dog here, it's not a play date for my dog. And I don't want to bring mine to your BBQ either. Ill use my dog walker if I need to.

I think it is in part "lock down dogs" or owners but I also wonder if there is just a creeping sense of entitlement where people prioritise their own needs (because as far as I can tell it's usually about what the owner wants not the dog). Of course I'll take my dog to the beach, why would four adults need to take her into a shop. Why can't one just wait on the beach with the dog.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 17/09/2023 21:14

All these people talking about how they like 'well-behaved dogs'.

I cannot remember the last time I passed a dog that was walking calmly to heel. It used to be the norm to take your dog to puppy school but nobody seems to bother any more.

eggsontoastnbeans · 17/09/2023 21:14

I agree and I have a dog! I get anxious going out now as we've had so many untrained dogs charging up to our dog and then all hell let's lose. I've had the idiot owners calling me names and swearing at me when I've objected to their off lead dogs charging at us. It's bonkers, gone too far now

StarDolphins · 17/09/2023 21:14

Screamingabdabz · 17/09/2023 21:09

There are not ‘plenty of places’ that’s the whole point. It’s dog world out there, which is bad enough, but the dogs are usually attached to utterly insufferable cunts who are completely selfish and inconsiderate. At least the dogs are innocent. I’d take the dogs over their dopey dumbshit owners.

Actually yes I do agree, it’s the owners that are the problem. I love dogs & the more I get to meet, the better. However, lots of owners are not on the ball.

Plus........
I used to love going to the park for a picnic. Last time I tried that, my food was snaffled up by a dog. ☹️

A couple of years ago we were having a picnic, and a dog ran up to us and cocked it's leg all over my bag (which was sitting right beside me). The dog walker supposedly responsible for it didn't even notice as she was a good 10 meters away along with one other person and about 10 (at least) dogs of varying shapes and sizes, mostly off lead.
