To expect parents to try to keep children quiet on campsites early in the morning?

Camping this weekend at an event - lots of families, tents tightly packed in.

Me and the DC were woken up this morning at 6:45am by a group of children (would say 6-9ish age range) shrieking and shouting non-stop. No let up for about an hour.

AIBU to think parents should have tried to keep their noise down so early? My DC aren’t larks and normally sleep through anything but were both woken up and are already grumpy and tired.

Obviously some children wake up early and can be a bit excitable in a group, but this was soft-play-birthday-party level cacophony before 7am.

If you need screens to keep your kids quiet you're doing it wrong. No books, colouring, board games?

Duechristmas · 12/09/2023 18:22

It's the reason I stopped camping. If I can keep my kids and adults can keep quiet after ten, then you can keep yours quiet in the morning. The privilege of thinking otherwise is ridiculous.

pinkhousesarebest · 12/09/2023 18:19

I suppose they are British parents. Other nationalities ( who live in appartements/ city centres) train their children to travel quietly in public transport, sit nicely in restaurants and generally be part of society without being a spectacle.

God forbid the children were overwhelmed by the environment and not able to contain their autism adhd anxiety ect ect so your perfect angles could sleep!!!

I detect a 'degree' of projection in this post 😂

zingally · 12/09/2023 17:31

YABU to go and sleep with literally 2 thin pieces of canvas separating you and the kids. Of course kids are going to be up at that sort of time when the sun is up and in their tent.

Honestly, I think you did quite well to get to 6:45!

Next time buy day passes and stay in a hotel.

Reading through some of the responses to this post explains why we have so many inconsiderate and self absorbed children. If you're expecting total quiet and tranquility on a busy, family campsite then yes, you're in the wrong place. But that's not what the OP is saying. It is entirely reasonable to expect parents to actually parent their children by teaching them to be mindful of their surroundings and considerate of others. Normal chatter and activity at 6.45am is acceptable. Allowing your children to run around shrieking and screaming with no thought for others is not. It's just lazy parenting.

Agree. Early mornings are for reading, quiet play and maybe a walk or helping organize breakfast.

I truly wonder about children who need to mindlessly run around, scream and shriek. Are they unable to communicate normally? Whatever the reason, 10am would be the earliest for noisy play.

Why is it unacceptable for children to be up enjoying themselves and making noise in the morning when it is light, but acceptable for adults to make noise late into the night long after it is dark at campsites?

Was coming on to say the same. Why are adults always prioritised? It would drive me insane tbh but I either wouldn't go or would put up with it

Like previously said, if the child autistic or not, is causing a nuisance. Then you as a parent should take them away from where people are trying to sleep.

I cannot believe how self ccentred some people are.

I have also noticed a move towards less and less sites taking tents. Probably for reasons like this.

what about other children with autism adhd anxiety etc? They have to suffer because of lazy parents?

Both me and DD have ADHD and never wake anyone up before noon (on holiday) unless something is on fire.

@jgw1 exactly this!! Why are groups of adults always reminded about the No noise rule after 10pm but families with children allowed to do exactly as they please and annoy other campers? I know children wake early but surely you wouldn’t allow them to shout and shriek before 7am? Have some thought for other people!!!

Ndhdiwntbsivnwg · 12/09/2023 14:43

Maybe go to adult only campsites

anti-social people are just a disturbance in hotels or even as neighbours in holiday let, that's the problem. A shrieking child is a nuisance wherever you are, and will end up waking everybody around, whether you are in a tent or a bedroom.

There is, at least some sound deadening in a hotel room.

On the contrary, I love camping. An early morning doesn't bother me, and neither do other people's happy children, which is the point I've made throughout.

If I was so easily bothered by other people enjoying their holiday, I would choose one where the only thing separating me from others wasn't 2mm of nylon and a few metres at a busy, weekend, outdoor event.

But, then again, I am a sensible person.

You sound like a camping martyr, too uncomfortable to sleep, plonking a tent in the full sun and complaining it's too hot. Is that why you think it's acceptable to bring your misery to others and wake them up at ridiculous hours? 😂

Wasn't Bognor, but that neck of the world to confirm that indeed, it was rather hot.

I like your style 😂😂😂

Plus you prove the point that when made to shut the hell up, any child or parent manage perfectly well.

I am EVIL without sleep. And selfish people do my nut in.

You won't - I am not a fan of near Chichester Bognor.

Have only ever camped twice. Never, ever again.

First time the children in the tent next to us started playing recorders at 5am. I hissed that if they didn’t stop I would shove them right up their arses. It soon stopped.

Second time the woman next door trilled loudly at “dearest Oscar” and “darling Tristan” to ask if they wanted croissants or waffles for breakfast and to “take care running over the guy ropes”. It was 6am and the entertainment had ended at 2am. I shouted that I assumed she was making that offer to everyone woken by it and she hurriedly ushered the kids back inside and kept things to a whisper.

The last time I went camping was last weekend, to be close to the beach, not far from Chichester. NO ONE was up at 6:30 😂(or if they were, they were quiet as anything) .

There is a thing called "shade" for a start, and because it WAS hot, and everybody else seemed pretty normal, no one seemed to have gone to bed at 6pm 😂.

I sincerely hope I will never bump into you on a campsite

You've clearly never been camping and are writing from a place of complete ignorance.

It's really challenging to stay in bed after sunrise - not only is it completely light but the tent quickly gets very hot too - especially after the weekend we've just had.

It is completely normal to be up at 6:30 on a camping holiday.

Modern tents have blackout bedrooms!

This summer I was one of only two people up on the whole campsite at 7.30am... including children. The other person was off for an early paddleboard trip before breakfast.
