...to think teachers DO get paid over the holidays?

It doesn't make sense to me.

Some people say teachers don't get paid over the holidays. They are paid, they say, for 40 weeks, but their money is aggregated over 52 weeks and paid monthly.

What does that even mean? How is it (practically) any different to being paid (less per week) for 52 weeks?

Following as I find it confusing too
So a normal teacher's salary is 30K

Do they actually only get paid 26.5K (this would be 6 weeks unpaid)
Do the get 30K it says on the tin
Do they get 34K pro rata (so 30K because 6 weeks is unpaid)

Not interested on how hard you work or do longer hours than everyone else
or how underpaid y'all are
Just straight up confused about the 6 weeks being unpaid

Both the last two options are correct. We get the published salary, which is for 39 weeks of work. However, this is paid in equal installments over 52 weeks. If we were paid for 52 weeks and in school for that time, I'd be needing term time holidays......

Why do so many teachers whinge and whine about their jobs? Many people have jobs they don't particularly like, but they just suck it up and get on with it, or quit and get another job.

You’re whining and whinging. Why are you allowed to but teachers can’t talk about things that frustrate them?

Iwasafool · 24/02/2026 15:17

Teachers do get paid over the holidays they just don't get paid for holidays beyond what anyone else gets. When I worked in local government I had staff with term time contracts and it worked the same, salary for the year divided by 12.

Shinyandnew1 · 24/02/2026 10:49

As always, these views come from goady ‘gotcha’ moments. Usually after 20 minutes of people making comments about you only working part time, having half the year off on holiday and just playing with children, a teacher snaps back-‘we actually work quite hard you know and don’t work 9-3’, people then cry out with ‘ffs teachers are always moaning and think they work harder than anyone else!’

mumsneedwine · 24/02/2026 10:45

Our hours sure annualised, so the same hours are set out over the 39 weeks we work as if we worked a 9-5 week. Obviously teachers work many more than the contracted hours (as do many others !).

As has been said soooo many times, no teacher says they have it hardest. Ever. In the history of the world. Just that the job is harder and is getting worse every year.

Don't like it then leave ? Yup, teachers are. Why your kids are often being taught maths and science by any warm body they can find.

One if the reasons that teachers attract criticism more than other roles is the moaning about the holidays. Yes, they may be paid to only work for 39 weeks of the year and that is spread out over 52, but let’s be real. Teachers are at a similar professional level to nurses, the police, social workers, etc. Their pay is also at a similar level (actually nurse’s wage is worse). For some reason teachers expect that they should be paid more, as they believe that their 13 week holiday should be protected, compared to the 4-5 week holiday of their colleagues in other agencies. The way teacher’s hours are set up is semantics - if teachers just accepted that probably 4-5 weeks of their holidays are actually protected and their pay reflects working across the other hours like similar professions - they would attract far less criticism.

@Awwwwooooga
You really have no idea! Teachers would be more than happy if they actually got 4-5 weeks protected holidays. 🙄
Most holidays are spent marking, planning etc. Since leaving teaching I now have far more time off than I ever got in teaching, I now get 26 days of leave…

True. There have been MN threads before that have focused on the conditions and it's what I hear on the ground a lot.

I think for a lot of teachers it isn't just about the money. It really is also about the conditions and expectations, especially following the news headlines yesterday.

Yep. But as far as I can see no one is attempting to sketch out what the solution might look like, much less move towards it. Plus CoL does mean that everyone needs more money which confuses the issue.

tamade · 24/02/2026 06:54

Seems to me that teachers (and junior doctors, nurses, ....) are in roles which are king stressful, and the only thing that anyone in the civil service or HMG can think of to make them happier is to give them more money, of which there is little. And then we get the drama of the union vs the government, strikes and drama arguing over how much until everyone believes that money really is the issue.

I don't work in a school, I manage a foundry and it is years since I have had a pay raise request from anyone, I fought tooth and nail to get everyone on reasonable salaries about 4 years ago and spent the rest of my time keeping the teams happy and engaged. If it was me I'd be wanting to look at reducing the out of hours working time and improving behaviour of the country's school children

And yet, rather like this situation with you, I was responding to a comment that had nothing to do with the other person. It wasn’t their comment, they simply didn’t like my opinion and snarked. They engaged with me. Rather like you are now. I won’t reply any further. Suffice to say I believe you to be wrong, and also trying to provoke an argument because you don’t like my opinion.

This is so funny! It's a public forum not a private message.

Duejuly26 · 24/02/2026 06:19

I’m a teacher - I like my job. I’m not posting on a thread to moan about it. What I will moan about is why people feel they can slag off teachers constantly? I might be wrong but I don’t see regular threads goading and making clear snide comments at other professions.

In response to the actual post, teachers
‘directed time in England and Wales is the maximum of 1,265 hours per year, over 195 days, that a teacher can be required to work by their headteacher.’

So we get paid for 1265 hours per year. The expectation is that all work should be done in that time. I’m lucky in that at my school, I am often able to get my work done in that time so only end up working for a few hours in the holidays. This doesn’t change that I’m getting paid for 1265 hours, NOT the holidays. It is just spread across the holidays, like people who are paid monthly don’t get paid for weekends yet still receive a monthly wage.

OonaStubbs · 23/02/2026 23:12

Teachers - if you don't like your job, quit and do something else.

No I wouldn't want to, or be able to be, a teacher. But that's why I didn't go into that profession.

If all the moaning teachers quit on the spot tomorrow, the government would have to do something. But just going to work and moaning about it isn't going to achieve anything except getting people's backs up.

@OonaStubbs
You seem oblivious to the fact that many teachers are leaving the profession because it is ‘that bad’
Have you been living under a rock? 🙄 Many schools have been without teachers for multiple terms. The government is well aware of this fact but their answer is to offer financial incentives to attract new recruits and they seem to be in complete denial about the retention crisis. It’s all a bit pointless recruiting more teachers if they are leaving within 5 years because it’s horrifically shit!
I am one of many who has left and I’m sorry to disappoint you but my non teaching job is a million times better than teaching and significantly less stressful. Unless you’ve ever been a teacher then you can’t possibly have the faintest idea how bad it is.

Your response was pretty spiky though. It's not like you were just passing the time of day, you responded to stir the argument, irrespective of how long ago the argument went quiet.
Your whole post there is kind of odd. What were you doing if not arguing with strangers.

To be fair, I disagree. I responded to a comment without checking the date, they didn’t like it and made a snarky response and I snarked back.

I’m not sure why you feel the need to get involved, but again, you’re embarrassingly trying to fight an internet stranger.

And you apparently want to argue because… I actually don’t know. It’s a bit weird really that you’re trying to start an argument with a stranger with no actual points to make. Perhaps you just need to have the last word so you can feel like you “won” so go ahead. I won’t be replying again.

Poor reading comprehension? From someone who didn't notice a thread was 3 years old!

Again, attention to detail and reading comprehension are not the same thing. And if you actually had a point you wouldn’t be going off on one
