I hate the word 'stink'. What words do you hate for no real reason?

I dunno if it's just because I dislike it so much, but 'stink' or 'stinky' or 'stinking' seems to be written regularly on different posts. I hate it and no idea why really it's just a word Grin

It's not even like it evokes an unpleasant memory, like of an awful odour or something. I have no logical reason for my not liking the word. Maybe just the way the k looks kind of sharp at the end, and abruptly finishes the word? And of course it does mean and unpleasant thing, whereas the word 'slink' does not necessarily...See, I told you it made no sense.

Also, belly. Again I can't really say why I don't like this word. I don't have such a violent dislike as in I don't mind other people using it, but would never use it myself.

What words do you hate for totally illogical reasons?

'Offer' when related to food - so insufferably smug and I've only ever heard it used on MN.

We always offer crudités before a meal. If the children finish their meal we'll offer fresh fruit.

Offer? Fuck off. I don't offer. I make the tea and they can eat it or find themselves hungry around 9pm.

😂😂

Shitshow

Hate it and it's used quite a lot on MN though fortunately I don't hear it in RL

I always imagine that the kind of person who objects to referring to children as 'kids' must be extremely formal and buttoned up.

Not at all. Quite the contrary actually but I happen to be professionally trained with children and work with them.

Never once have I or anyone else I know in that capacity referred to them as ‘ kids’.
They are not goats.

We refer to them as children in class and most definitely not as kids.

As you were.

Where do you stand on "drawers" or "breeks" ?
Grin

Drawers/draws are OK.
Breeks are just perfect.
DH was a Scotsman and always wore breeks😁.

Beverage! My husband knows I hate this word, but he still asks whether I want a 'hot beverage'. Awful! He does it on purpose. Aaagh!

Sloppy.

Had a school teacher who used to boom out at assembly 'stop sitting sloppily' in a disgusted voice at us children.
It was like we were dirt the way he said it and it's put me off the word forever.

My parents live next door to a Manse ( Scottish vicarage). I hate the way they pronounce it and they actually use the word rather than say “it” or something.
I had an uncle who used to call my aunties spots “ the bunch”. So fucking creepy and weird.

blueshoes · 28/08/2023 22:16

Cum (when used as 'combined with'). Can't you find a better word?

”Bits” to describe pointless cluttery shopping where someone’s impulse-bought a huge pile of crap.

Oooh yes, thanks for that one. I always wonder exactly what people have bought, but I always assume it’s something that’s a waste of money.

tectonicplates · 28/08/2023 22:04

Smash, when used in a political context, e.g. smash the patriarchy, smash capitalism etc. I’m all for bringing down the patriarchy, or getting rid of it, but I don’t want to “smash” it. There’s something so cringe about it.

Ample portion. I struggled to type that. Dh will say it to enjoy my reaction, which usually involves the use of violent sexual imagery.

Just no panties please.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/08/2023 21:44

The use of the word "beautiful" for meat .

A view is beautiful , a person is beautiful, a house is beautiful .

"See Lidl , their meat is beautiful"

No meat can be delicious .
But not beautiful

IMO

KohlaParasaurus · 28/08/2023 21:29

Peckish.

@xprincessxjanetx I also hate "having a brew" for having a cup of tea, but I know why that is and it wouldn't bother me in the slightest if the only person I know who uses the expression would say it in her normal adult voice instead of putting on an exaggerated Scouse accent.

Sophie stanbury on Instagram harps on and on about having "yummy suppers" and I just want to scream

I have no idea who this woman is, but I want her dead.

SocksAndTheCity · 28/08/2023 20:38

I have loads, but they've all been done already!

I hate all the food and eating related ones, especially on the threads sneering at or slagging people off for something - they're always 'gorging', 'guzzling', 'chomping' or 'slurping', never just eating and drinking. Even typing that made me feel queasy 🤢
