I hate the word 'stink'. What words do you hate for no real reason?

I dunno if it's just because I dislike it so much, but 'stink' or 'stinky' or 'stinking' seems to be written regularly on different posts. I hate it and no idea why really it's just a word Grin

It's not even like it evokes an unpleasant memory, like of an awful odour or something. I have no logical reason for my not liking the word. Maybe just the way the k looks kind of sharp at the end, and abruptly finishes the word? And of course it does mean and unpleasant thing, whereas the word 'slink' does not necessarily...See, I told you it made no sense.

Also, belly. Again I can't really say why I don't like this word. I don't have such a violent dislike as in I don't mind other people using it, but would never use it myself.

What words do you hate for totally illogical reasons?

Super as an adverb - super anxious, super upset etc

WickedSerious · 01/09/2023 07:48

'Bits and bobs' (I heard someone the other day saying 'bibs and bobs' which is even more irritating).

When people say they are 'cross' about something.

Can't really explain it. It just feels like it barely qualifies as an emotion to me.

Nothing wrong with belly tummy comfy or poorly Confused

Oh another one it's tea not dinner!

Have to disagree on all those, unless you are addressing a toddler.

Yes, if it's sandwiches and cake. Not for a main hot meal!

Tasty. Loathe it.

Me too. I especially hate it when used to describe something sweet.

Oh yes, there are quite a few journo ones now I think of it : uptick, revellers, blaze, scorcher....

Moniker is an Irish traveller word. Like bloke

Abhannmor · 29/08/2023 13:28

Wreaked. Not wrong just ugly and unnecessary. It's a homophone of ' reeked' as well.

You don't see a 'wreaked iron" gate. You never feel ' over wreaked '.

Wrought I say !!

Scaryghost · 29/08/2023 13:24

When I hear men say ‘I need a dump/shit’ that’s horrible on every level.

I hate the word slum as it conjures horrible images of poor people in times gone by who lived in awful conditions . Even worse the word is making a comeback to describe some of todays housing and some LL .

Times gone by ? 🤨 Millions of people around the world are still living in slums.

Or is it "draws"?

No. And ‘draws’ when it should be ‘drawers’ makes me seethe.

Draws is a verb. Drawers is a noun. There should be no confusion.

That's the joke she was making, there are many threads on here about the pronunciation of the word drawers.

Supper: there's just something so pretentious about it. Can't explain but it has a bad effect on me!

Supper , for me, is in my pj's having tea /toast/cereal, watching TV, feeling cosy before I go to bed.
However if it refers to uppercrust society sitting around a posh dining table, having a full 3 course dinner, being served as in Miss Marple stories, I find extremely pretentious!

Not at all. Quite the contrary actually but I happen to be professionally trained with children and work with them.

Never once have I or anyone else I know in that capacity referred to them as ‘ kids’.
They are not goats.

We refer to them as children in class and most definitely not as kids.

As you were.

I'm unconvinced.

I often wish there was a "like" button similar to Facebook for posts, I agree with you entirely. It's up there with brought, instead of bought for me.

Trouser and lip/anything clothes or makeup related that naturally comes in multiples. Whilst you're doing your utmost to sound as worldly wise and sartorially knowledgeable as possible, are you absolutely sure you've got one leg and arse cheek covered in fabric and put half of your lipstick on? It's a bold fashion statement if you have, but otherwise, you're just being a pompous twat.

Just no panties please.

Kecks is best

Snack.

DP's mum is the only person I know who says it,I don't know if it's the word itself or the way she says it but it makes me want to scream.
