I hate the word 'stink'. What words do you hate for no real reason?

I dunno if it's just because I dislike it so much, but 'stink' or 'stinky' or 'stinking' seems to be written regularly on different posts. I hate it and no idea why really it's just a word Grin

It's not even like it evokes an unpleasant memory, like of an awful odour or something. I have no logical reason for my not liking the word. Maybe just the way the k looks kind of sharp at the end, and abruptly finishes the word? And of course it does mean and unpleasant thing, whereas the word 'slink' does not necessarily...See, I told you it made no sense.

Also, belly. Again I can't really say why I don't like this word. I don't have such a violent dislike as in I don't mind other people using it, but would never use it myself.

What words do you hate for totally illogical reasons?

Pregnant (for non pregnancy)

Eg my boss used to call out half baked ideas saying "you can't be half pregnant."

The women of the office cringed and we had to have a little intervention

Any variation on the thingy/thingybob/ thingummies theme.

My list would consist of:

Crumpet, as in 'she's a lovely bit of crumpet.'

Dog mama

Methinks

Wank, or worse, 'pile of wank'

Schtum

Gullet

Spanner, especially 'he's a right spanner'

Bloke

My Mum hated "Pressie/Bikkie/Peckish/Snack"

(She would probably hate Picky Bits/Picky Tea as well )

My Dad and I would wind her up (good natured not nasty)

Me "I'm a bit peckish , I fancy a snack"
Dad" "Me too , maybe a bikkie . D'you someone will bring some as a pressie"

Mum < explodes>

Mum said "'Urbs" for herbs .
"No you're not American, it;s herbs "

Anything over 100% eg 110% or 1000% there's no such thing 😡

Lush
Babe
Wife (I got married last year and I just hate the word, I prefer partner)
Super (before words instead of very, but not as a word to mean great, eg. Super heavy)
Holibobs
Hubby/hubster
Supper
Nervous (I hate it when people say I'm nervous instead of angry because nervous means afraid)
Vulva
Fair (when people say it as a conversation stopper)
Mental health

I hate 'belly' - it just seems vulgar to me and reminds me of beer bellies. Also 'bum' - strangely I like 'arse' and 'butt', but bum just seems twee when used by adults. I know I'm being completely illogical here!

There are lots of expressions I hate - but I know OP asked about words, so a bit off-topic. One I see on here a lot is 'lives rent free in your head'. I hate this because it's naff and hackneyed and I imagine it being said in a corny American accent with vocal fry. Ugh (covers ears).

Minimili · 28/02/2025 07:07

Snack makes me die inside when I hear it, it’s unavoidable because so maybe people use it and sounds so childish when adults say they are snacking or buying snacks.

I hate the word chuckle and “cheeky” as in “cheeky smile” or “cheeky wine”

I agree with most of the other posters but especially on “hubby” or “hubster”. If I meet someone who uses those words then I know to avoid them forever.

Pudding, bedding, truckle, suckle and sick unless someone has 'been sick'.

AnnaPhylaxis3 · 27/02/2025 13:58

I found this because I also hate that word...and belly...and moist...and feet. In fact, I hate them so much it's hard to even type the words. Why? I don't know. I've always hated those words.

AngelusBell · 23/07/2024 19:57

LanaLane · 17/09/2023 17:16

‘Reach out’ - in a business sense - ‘we are reaching out to…’
‘Baby’ - as in ‘and baby sleeps’; ‘In the car baby cries’.
