Dark chocolate Malteasers WTF?

SuperGinger · 15/08/2023 11:03

I thought I'd have a little treat and bought some Malteasers but didn't notice they are dark and horrible with 30 % less sugar, the whole point of Malteasers is the sweet melt in the mouth malty pop not this bitter, sawdust creation. I know they aren't healthy but why do the "it's better for you brigade" ruin a good thing

They still sell the original ones though so this makes no sense. And the packaging was clearly labelled.

MuggleMe · 15/08/2023 14:17

I usually prefer dark chocolate (mmm KitKat) but they were a huge disappointment. They don't melt right.

Missedmytoe · 15/08/2023 14:14

I liked them too.
A while ago, I tried the Doisy & Dam vegan alternative. Now they were horrible.

Not my cup of tea. Dark chocolate is gorgeous.... jiat not on a malt ball..

Thing is, you can't taste the malt ball over the shit chocolate. And you can't eat them like Maltesers, because the shitty chocolate doesn't melt, because it's probably as closely related to actual chocolate as I am to the Queen.

Excited101 · 15/08/2023 14:11

I love dark chocolate things, but these were rank. I bought them twice to be sure and won’t buy them again.

Caffeinatedhuman · 15/08/2023 14:08

These were on reduced to clear st my local tesco express.

Well, I must be in a minority of one as I really liked them! I bought a packet in Heron Foods (which for the uninitiated is where short shelf life or underperforming foodstuffs go to be put out of their misery😀)
I liked them so much I went back for another packet to scoff later in the week.
This week's treat was Praline Ritter Bars.

Tessisme · 15/08/2023 12:36

I bought a packet - ahem - DELIBERATELY (before I get ripped to shreds) and can confirm that they are indeed absolutely fecking minging. Even DS1, our resident human vacuum cleaner and polisher-off of rejected food, refused to eat them. They are not a treat.

Gettingbysomehow · 15/08/2023 12:12

I bought them by mistake the other day because I didn't know dark maltesers existed. They were disgusting, I was outraged.

Mrsjayy · 15/08/2023 12:09

Oh god ex lax used to be inour house because mum and her friends used it for weight loss !

GrimGrinningGhosts · 15/08/2023 12:08

Mrsjayy · 15/08/2023 12:03

Oh now dark kit kats are a different story!

My mother used to feed me Ex Lax as a kid and dark chocolate just reminds me of it. The only exception being a Fry's Chocolate Cream and only because the mint overpowers the chocolate 😂

Mrsjayy · 15/08/2023 12:03

GrimGrinningGhosts · 15/08/2023 12:02

I made a similar mistake the other week with a multi pack of kit kats. Never spat anything out quite so fast in my life.
I need to stop shopping on auto pilot clearly 😂

I've always wanted to have naked maltesers. I used to love Horlicks tablets but not sure if you can get them anymore?

Toddlerteaplease · 15/08/2023 11:57

First time I've failed to finish a bag in one sitting.

Toddlerteaplease · 15/08/2023 11:56

I started a thread on this a few weeks ago. They are so wrong!

Mrsjayy · 15/08/2023 11:54

You are like oo maltesers and easy not notice the "dark in the corner.

Mrsjayy · 15/08/2023 11:53

Tbf it is an easy mistake .if you were not paying much attention.

There's something so human about taking something great and ruining it a little so you can have more of it.

phoenixrosehere · 15/08/2023 11:48

SuperGinger · 15/08/2023 11:12

Well I just saw the red packaging, it was on the bottom shelf of the supermarket - so no need to be sniffy and superior

How is it being sniffy and superior to point out that the bag clearly stated what kind they were?

NicotineQueen223 · 15/08/2023 11:44

Completely agree OP, I bought them by accident and was horrified. Absolutely horrified. It actually ruined my evening 🤣

floribunda18 · 15/08/2023 11:36

I sort of admire, and perhaps, fear, the "one square of dark chocolate as a treat" people but yes I'm with you, OP. Maltesers just melt in the mouth and are perfect as they are and should not be interfered with.

chillibear · 15/08/2023 11:33

I picked these up by mistake the other day but thankfully realised at the till. I normally wouldn't have asked to swap them but so glad I did reading this 😁

Helendegenerate · 15/08/2023 11:19

I am a Malteser fan and treat myself from time to time but have not read a single comment in favour of the new dark variety. I won't bother trying them.

This might be something which disappears from the shelves before long.

(I sometimes put 2 or 3 in my mouth at once and just let them melt 😁😏😘)

PuttingDownRoots · 15/08/2023 11:16

They weren't right.

Malteser chocolate is a particular taste unlike other chocolate. Its what makes them nice!
