So many E-scooter deaths..

Aibu... To want to have E-scooter drivers pass maybe a theory test? They are meant to be illegal, but let's face it... They're everywhere. I see about 3-4 a day! Knowing the law of the road might be somewhat helpful. It 'might' prevent done of these fatal outcomes maybe.. I don't know. What do you think?

MaxiPadd · 30/07/2023 10:55

Even having sensors like cars do for collision warnings that limited speed would be helpful from the current state of them

MaxiPadd · 30/07/2023 10:53

If ones for children were limited to 8mph or 4mph or something

And adults say 15mph with a requirement for high visibility clothing with a helmet and automatic confiscation if this wasn't followed they could be managed and perhaps allowing them in cycle lanes (with suitable safety measures like high vis lights and helmet)

Realistically there's no safe place you can drive them (pavements and paths) going over those speeds and even then it's hairy sometimes but why have things able to go at 50mph when you can never drive them on a road with cars at that speed

To go the distances necessary for those speeds you wouldn't use a scooter- who travels 50 miles away on one - ever?

Dbank · 30/07/2023 10:46

I don't think a theory test would make any significant difference as so many riders are completely ignoring the law in the first place.

I would like to see e-scooters and e-bikes fit in the mix of transport options, but in an way that makes the users accountable and the laws capable of being enforced.

It's currently chaos, with the existing legislation ignored by everyone including the police. That's why we now have illegal e-bikes capable of > 60 MPH being ridden by children.

Newandveryconfused · 30/07/2023 10:43

As pp have said, they have to be legalised to enforce rules etc...
To have children riding them is just insane. Something needs to change now before they become MORE popular. Which they will. The concept is a great idea but we've gotta act now before it's too late. It's just gonna get worse over time tbh.
We have a man that rides a single wheeled one.. But he's always wearing a helmet and biker jacket with Hi-vis. He uses it to go to work.
He's at least trying.

Ok then.....

But, you must of misunderstood the angle I'm coming at this with.
I've not compared types of vehicle incidents. I've not said "take them off the road or ban them"
I'm just suggesting a theory test as knowledge for the riders. This surly cant do harm. Cars have increased in quantity over the decades.... This mode of transport could also do the same.

Many police forces have done just that from time to time. It doesn't stop people.

That's disappointing, though I guess I should have known better - so maybe tthe ban on sales you mentioned would work better?

I can just hear Halfords et all though; "You're going to cost thousands of jobs!!!"

Apparently, if you get caught dangerous driving on a scooter, you can get points on your
regular car licence.

I believe you get points if you are just caught on an illegal scooter, you don’t even have to drive it dangerously. But the police don’t have time to enforce and I suspect most riders don’t have a car license so don’t care.

Gateappreciation · 30/07/2023 10:17

Newandveryconfused · 30/07/2023 09:48

Did this one make the news at all?

I just think that, the deaths, accidents, life changing injuries "could potentially" reduce if knowledge was taught to the riders. Maybe have a dress code.. Ie helmet when used. It's just a case of... They are not going anywhere.. They are here to stay. More and more are being bought.
Let's try and get ahead of it now kinda suggestion.

Widely reported locally. Don’t think it made national news.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 30/07/2023 10:17

ivykaty44 · 30/07/2023 08:36

so if you test all escooter riders and put all that energy into it what would be the result? One less death per year

if you concentrate on finding a way to make drivers safer, the result might be saving up to 2000 lives per year

which do you think you should tackle first or as priority to save the most lives?

Well actually potentially 22 deaths per year going on last years stats. We could do both you know, look at improving road safety inc cars and e scooters. It’s not a binary option

Luckydip1 · 30/07/2023 10:11

Whilst they are technically illegal, they cannot introduce rules. if they do legalise them, they could say that helmets have to be worn, must only go on roads, high viz clothing and no scooter capable of going more than 20kmh.

jenbj · 30/07/2023 10:00

More people are going to be killed by cars because there are many more of them. It's not an either or. The tragedy is that many of the people killed or injured on scooters are young and inexperienced on the roads and don't understand the need to wear visible clothing. We need education and legislation.

GenieGenealogy · 30/07/2023 09:59

I don’t see many motorbikes being ridden at speed through a pedestrianised area, along pavement, the wrong way down one way streets, with no lights on etc.

I do. There are hundreds of illegal e-bikes in my city, the ones which have been jailbroken to evade the maximum speed limit on an e-bike and look more like motorbikes than cycles. No lights, dark clothing, riding on pavements, on the road, in and out of traffic. Riders with hoods pulled down, bandana on face pulled up. And with a Just Eat or Deliveroo backpack on.

One made the news... But I do not want necessarily "my" location given.

Ok then.....

Newandveryconfused · 30/07/2023 09:49

Alexandra2001 · 30/07/2023 09:41

.... which i acknowledged, if you read my post properly? still 36 deaths over 4 years.....

Can you link the local press on these deaths that happened in your area? must be quite easy as very recent.

Cars are the biggest killers by far. Of course there are people riding illegal scooters and high powered electric bikes. But, just as with cars being driven dangerously, that is all about our failure to enforce existing laws. We do not need new laws

A teenager died locally to where I live a few weeks ago. Tragic loss of a young life.

So just on mumnets survey, that’s at least three.

No the figure is a Govt one, given to some commons committee, stats are stats & deaths, however they happen, are recorded.

Casualty data – fatalities
Since 2019, PACTS is aware of a total of thirty-four deaths involving e-scooters, one in 2019, three in 2020, thirteen in 2021, fourteen in 2022 and three in 2023 (to early July). A register is available here (latest edition 10 July 2023)

Even if these deaths you refer too happened in late July, that makes a total of 36 deaths in 4 years, a tragedy for those involved but nothing compared to the almost 8000 deaths and 100,000 serious injuries caused by cars.

Sense of perspective needed?

No mode of transport is completely safe, but finding different ways to get around cities that doesn't include private cars is a good thing

Alexandra2001 · 30/07/2023 08:36

3 e-scooter deaths so far this year, approx 1000 caused by vehicle drivers.

This thread is just another example of car drivers refusing to accept responsibility for their own poor driving & wanting the roads for themselves, regardless of who they kill or pollute.

You have the ones that make the main news, but in July now, In my area... We've had 2 die. The One lad is in the same year of school as my eldest daughter.

Very unlucky as there has only been 3 deaths this year in the whole of the UK... compared to approx 1000 deaths from cars etc.

I think you'd have a heart attack if you went to Mallorca, there we saw kids hurtling around on e scooters, at night, no lights, busy roads...

Newandveryconfused · 30/07/2023 09:02

ivykaty44 · 30/07/2023 07:49

That number would likely be higher if anyone could jump in a car without a test. Five deaths a day from a statistic pov is low when you consider the number of cars on the road

the number of escooter deaths is what 1 or 2 a year so statistically extremely low, so what’s the point in testing and insuring them as OP wants when deaths aren’t high?
