Hot and bored on holiday

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 13:09

So I’m definitely being a bit unreasonable . We are lucky enough to have a holiday house in Spain- sports resort . Golf/ cycling max DH loves it. We have a pool and aircon.

I’m perimenopausal with heat intolerance and overweight. We’ve been here 5 days now. I’ve read 3 books , bored of lying on a sun bed reading. It’s too hot to eat out in the evening . Even DH and the kids were hot and sticky in the evening at a restaurant. After an hour we were all keen to come home.

It’s too hot to go anywhere and do anything. The kids are happy in the pool.
I’m too old to be in a nightclub, I don’t want to watch sport or Jeremy Fucking Clarkson …

I hate cards and board games. Might have to resort to a jigsaw….

So i’m grumpy and drinking cold rose wine on the patio…… Cheer me up mumsnet please !

@ItsCalledAConversation

here’s a conversation ya whiny bint .
It’s too hot to cook. DH and the kids are fussy eaters so not much fun to cook.
Yes I’ve had salad daily and it was nice.
Yes to yoga and I meditate
I’m bored of sleeping and am woken by back pain and sciatica every few hours - this might be part of my grumpiness .

It’s too hot to be touched let alone have sex. And why the hell should I reward DH for buggering off.

makeup would slide off my face in seconds
Cold water immersion - yes maybe drive to a beach at night on my own. Pool is like a warm bath

DH won’t sit outside in the evening as he moans about mosquitos so I’m outside on my own…

No wonder I have finished three books. 🤣🤣🤣

I love the suggestion of a house swap or local day trips. DH is having his perfect holiday..
Next year I’ll say no to July / August. His idea of compromise is coming at the end of August.

No is a complete sentence … :-)

The family I knows compromise is he goes away on solo hobby holidays and they are now on a proper family holiday (no dad hobbies)
I think set up like you currently have allows him to delude himself that you are all having a nice family holiday when he was basically doing his hobby abroad.
Family I know scenario for years was mum up early with kids and sorting breakfast.
Mum supervise kids all day in pool (does like reading but there are limits!) mum makes lunch.
Dad got up late, faffed with bike, sorted his own food as he was ‘training’ so needed to eat set things. Then he went out for hours.
Mum gets kids ready for dinner out, tidies up, washing etc.
Dad comes in, showers.
All out for dinner - aren’t we having a lovely family holiday…
Yes it’s a luxury villa up a mountain side (chosen with hobby in mind) but no car, public transport or anything to see or do in walking distance.
I think teen kids saying they’re bored has finally stopped it.

Well you have my utmost sympathy because I absolutely despise oppressive heat. I'm quite content where I am rn, on the blowy coast of sunny scotia!

isthismylifenow · 24/07/2023 15:36

I assume this is your own property? Or do you rent out a villa each year?

What do you do on previous holidays there? It sounds like it's all centred around your husband tbh. You should not be having to tip toe around each morning waiting for him to wake up.

If it's your own place, of course you need to use it.

Try living like the locals do. Eat early (if he misses breakfast, tough shit), get out early before the heat of the day. Then back out after the heat of the day.

But if you are having to do it all alone, this may well be a big chunk of why you are having a shit time.

ItsCalledAConversation · 24/07/2023 15:28

Shut up ya whiny bint 😆

Shop for some local ingredients and make an amazing platter/meal/salad

Learn to meditate

Do some yoga

Have a sleep

Stick a movie on for your kids and have sex with your DH

Restyle yourself - attempt a drastic new makeup look

Try cold water immersion

Plan a night time fire pit session

Think up ways/make a list of how your family can contribute to slowing down climate change

Chickychoccyegg · 24/07/2023 15:27

I'm also in Spain at the moment and to be honest, I'm looking forward to coming home, it's far too hot, even the pool is like getting in a bath, I know we're lucky to be away this year,we haven't had a holiday abroad since 2018 , maybe I've just forgotten what its like

Loafbeginsat60 · 24/07/2023 15:27

I was bored on our holiday too and it was only 30 degrees. I was too hot to sunbathe and I just wanted to come home.

Spent a fortune too but at least the kids enjoyed the pool and the beach.

Maddy70 · 24/07/2023 15:25

Are you eating too early ? Spanish don't eat until 9.30.10 ish. When it's much cooler try going out later.

Lunch 1.30-3. Siesta afterwards

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 15:24

@Sixmonthcruise i’m really sorry to hear that. Sounds really tough.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 24/07/2023 15:24

OP, being away in this heat entertaining your children alone doesn't sound like much of a fun holiday to me.

We are going away in a few weeks, and I'm a bit concerned about how hot it will be for the children.

I wouldn't worry about the arsey posts, most people complain about something that others could only dream of having to complain about. That's the way of the world.

lavenderlou · 24/07/2023 15:23

Sell the house and find a holiday for next time where there is something for all of you to enjoy?

Or DH takes the kids to the house by himself?

Ohmylovejune · 24/07/2023 15:22

I know it's extra warm but it's always stupid hot in late July! It's why we go in April, May or June latest.

You've just been caught out by a hotter than normal year which is always a possibility.

It seems like the real issue is that your DH is completely dominating the decision about what you do and where you go on holiday, and you don't even like it.

Why do you let him do that?

PrincessofWellies · 24/07/2023 15:20

My purse is too small for my £50 notes 🤣🤣🤣

Yes, it is slightly tone deaf!

The crab mentality in the UK is ridiculous. We’re in the rain so you have no right to complain about being bored in Spain.

ivycastle · 24/07/2023 15:18

I understand where you're coming from, OP. Sounds like your DH has pretty much dragged you on his idea of a holiday that you were never really that keen on anyway. Not everyone likes sitting around in the heat all day.

Dixiechickonhols · 24/07/2023 15:17

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 15:12

Exactly this. Thanks for understanding. The kids would whinge anyway as they only want to hang out in the pool.
Anyway I’m back in the house after 20 mins frying by the pool under a shade. Shall find a Netflix box set as a few suggested.

DH can stuff golf today… he’s on pool duty.

Family I know are currently on a very different family holiday (minus his bike 😆 )
I suspect foot been put down by mum plus fact kids now older and also bored hanging around pool all day while dad indulges in his hobby for hours.

Sending thoughts and prayers to you at this difficult time OP.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 get in the pool op!

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 24/07/2023 15:16

Trip to the beach for a cooling dip in the sea and some ice cream?

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 15:16

Thanks folk who have made good suggestions.

to those hard of hearing…
The pool is like a bath, it’s hot in the shade. It’s Tom hot to go out.

Signing out as don’t need a kicking when feeling low.

Sunnydaysareahead · 24/07/2023 15:16

I wouldn't like to be somewhere in the blazing hot. We have been to these kind of places between Christmas and New Year / October or May half-term when it's pleasantly sunny and not stifling and you can actually get out and do stuff - is that an option for you next year?

Plus there is a separate issue here I definitely would not want my DH out doing his hobby whilst we're on holiday and me stuck at a holiday home with the kids

tt9 · 24/07/2023 15:16

tbf I would never go to Spain in July. way too hot. I love visiting in winter months

TraumaSurvivor · 24/07/2023 15:12
