Hot and bored on holiday

So I’m definitely being a bit unreasonable . We are lucky enough to have a holiday house in Spain- sports resort . Golf/ cycling max DH loves it. We have a pool and aircon.

I’m perimenopausal with heat intolerance and overweight. We’ve been here 5 days now. I’ve read 3 books , bored of lying on a sun bed reading. It’s too hot to eat out in the evening . Even DH and the kids were hot and sticky in the evening at a restaurant. After an hour we were all keen to come home.

It’s too hot to go anywhere and do anything. The kids are happy in the pool.
I’m too old to be in a nightclub, I don’t want to watch sport or Jeremy Fucking Clarkson …

I hate cards and board games. Might have to resort to a jigsaw….

So i’m grumpy and drinking cold rose wine on the patio…… Cheer me up mumsnet please !

Well, I’m sitting here in my living room in the lovely Scottish Highlands. It’s lightly drizzling and dh earlier queried whether we should put the central heating on. He’s put his jacket on instead. Obviously I’m mumsnetting at the moment but am about to move my arse and cook a curry for the dinner. I haven’t been abroad since Malta in 1989 and will be unlikely to go again. The kids have ruined me financially (and physically). I love swimming in the sea but a hot pool wouldn’t do it for me. I’m so so glad I’m not in Rhodes or Crete at the moment and I don’t envy you at all . Can you go to the beach once it’s cooler for a swim? At least you’ve got air con I suppose.

Op as a more immediate, practical solution could you make a bowl of water with some ice in it to stick your feet into?

Netflix wise, in your position I'd try and get into a series. Would you prefer light hearted or serious? I'm watching Derry Girls at the moment (I know Im late to the party) and it's good fun. I enjoyed Schitt's Creek (persevere past the first few episodes - they are so unlikeable at first it takes a while to get into it). The Good Place was entertaining too.

There's others but I'm out and can't recall off the top of my head. My list to watch is huge!

Hope you get some sleep tonight. Wet a towel and sleep under it if you need to get cooler. Sleep makes such a difference to our ability to cope with life. Oh and tell your husband he's staying at home so you can do something as a family. If you can tolerate his company at this point as I'd be raging at his selfish behaviour.

And yes, ignore the dicks. This thread is so clearly more than you being a bit hot. Reading comprehension and nuance on here can be extremely poor.

goingslightlyinsane · 24/07/2023 17:57

OP you sound like a really lovely person. I completely get your situation and I feel for you. Hope you can enjoy your 9 remaining days.

Netflix suggestions;
The Lincoln lawyer
Any below deck (sad I know but it's so naff it's good)
The women in the house across the window
Angela Black
You (I loved this)
The Holiday (will make you feel better)
Good girls (shit but funny)
Ozark
The staircase
Inventing Anna
The queens gambit
Black mirror
Selling sunset (another saddo one that's addictive)
Workin moms
The deepest breath
LiarThe Fall

It's hugely tone deaf though!

Really? I thought it was on the ball

Loved the wham documentary too.

Yes, I agree, I watched that on my lone holiday last week due to the opposite problem, too much rain at the caravan site, so stayed in and watched this, it was my era and I really enjoyed it

I am one of the 15% who think YANBU! For me, what you are describing would not be a holiday, it sounds more like a period of imprisonment! I would much rather stay at home than have your experience.

I agree.

@olympicsrock you need to sit that man down this evening and very firmly tell him that this is not working for you as a holiday. Never mind all of the places you might enjoy - that's for another time. You should deal with the here and now.

You're too hot, you're bored and you are minding his kids while he fucks off like a single man to do his own thing? Just no!

It must be lovely to have a holiday home, but basically you're pretty much doing what you would be doing if you'd stayed at home, only without all of your things around you, you wouldn't be sweltering and you would be way more independent.

He can have an allocated time for his hobbies but not all day every day. That's not a family holiday - he's not even with his family!

So pull up google maps and plan a few excursions to break the time up. An air conditioned car makes the heat much easier to tolerate.

Maybe the holiday home has outlived its usefulness? If you weren't stuck with it, you could choose to holiday in more temperate locations. I imagine you are tied to school holidays?

Please don't feel down about the nasty comments - some people shouldn't have internet access.

adriftabroad · 24/07/2023 17:42

@Zippedydodah Yes. The poster on rainy Dartmoor... that is my old home and idea of heaven. I am not going to insult her though😮

I am stuck in Spain for at least another 5 years. It is beyond me why people think "being in Spain" is so great and get snarky.
It is absolutely freezing in winter and almost un copeable with June/Sep.

Thedogscollar · 24/07/2023 17:41

Good grief some awful people on here.
I understand OP those temperatures are not enjoyable under any circumstances.
I do hope you and your husband can come to some agreement on future holidays. It can't be all about him.

Zippedydodah · 24/07/2023 17:37

I completely sympathise OP, it would be my idea of hell.
Gone are the days of laying out in the blistering hot sunshine, I absolutely cannot tolerate the heat at all due to worsening health problems.
There’s a lot of nasty bitching on here, it seems that few people have empathy for others, regardless of what situation they find themselves in, it’s really sad but typical nowadays on MN.
Yes, many can only dream of holidays but that doesn’t mean you have to show everyone how to be a first class jealous cow Ffs!
I had far too many years of no holiday and working myself into the ground but I was never jealous of those more fortunate, what would be the point?

EhrlicheFrau · 24/07/2023 17:30

Go for a swim? That might cool you down a bit, and use up enough energy so you can have a nap after?

@Mirabai - I’ll have a look thanks .

So far have done a thriller , comedy and a biography. Thriller number 2 got dull .

Loved GOT although not normally into magical stuff.

Could anyone suggest something on Netflix?

The Witcher because he is so fit!

Dixiechickonhols · 24/07/2023 17:27

I like virgin river as an easy watch ..lovely scenery in the Pacific Northwest.

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 17:26

I liked Michelle Obama’s autobiography too…

I just joined and I’m shocked at how horrible people are.

It's actually time something was done about them. Pure unbridled envy and begrudgery. It's nothing but a bitchfest of bullies.

StartSWagaintomorrow · 24/07/2023 17:24

Mirabai · 24/07/2023 17:18

Depends what you call a page turner. They’re not thrillers. They’re all memoirs of one sort or another.

I like a good memoir so long as it’s real not into flouncy literature iykwim.

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 17:21

@keykaty this sounds lovely . Thanks for suggesting.
DH could cycle a few stages while I waft by on the canal boat !

A few changes to be made… I need to lose weight so I can do more of the things I want to do. I work bloody hard at home and need to make time for myself. I’ve already said no to DH this week when he asked if I would take on extra work so that’s me standing up for myself!

Yes time together sure turns the spotlight on a marriage. We almost divorced a few years ago due to me being a widow to his sport.

Also - I bet you would enjoy something like a river cruise down the Rhine or cruise around the fjords.

Mirabai · 24/07/2023 17:18

StartSWagaintomorrow · 24/07/2023 17:14

Okay so I need to start reading more are these page turners? I usually know by the end of chapter 2 I’m the sort that once I start a book I have to read it even if I miss out on sleep. I’ll be ordering these on your recommendation.

StartSWagaintomorrow · 24/07/2023 17:16

Why would you go to a holiday home in the midst of a heatwave? We always book our holidays last minute and would never consider going anywhere when it was 43 degrees especially if was our own holiday home.

Pigeon31 · 24/07/2023 17:16

I'd try audio books for a change of pace, or listen to the proms on BBC sounds or something. Hope the weather turns soon.

StartSWagaintomorrow · 24/07/2023 17:14

Mirabai · 24/07/2023 17:12

You have all this time to read and read while basking in the heat - that’s my dream! You just need some cracking books:

  • Kiss Myself Goodbye Ferdinand Mount
  • Wavewalker Suzanne Heywood
  • A Normal Family Christa Bilton
  • The House of Glass Hadley Freeman
  • The Glass Castle Jeanette Walls
  • Slipstream, a memoir Elizabeth Jane Howard

Watch GOT.
