Woman showing entire bum in public when bending over - what would you have done?

I was in the queue to pay in clothes shop today, standing behind a woman with her friend, both with babies in prams. It was outrageously hot and so she was wearing a short denim skirt that was pulled up high and a vest top. Obviously nothing wrong with that, however she bent over a few times to get things out of the basket under the pram and in doing do flashed her entire bum and thong. There were also mirrors to the side and behind us, so presumably this was also reflected to the entire shop. It was a proper full moon, not just a bit of bum cheek.

It didn’t seem as though she had noticed and her friend couldn’t see from her angle. I couldn’t help thinking that if I was in that scenario that I’d want to know. However I didn’t say anything because it’s none of my business and I didn’t want to embarrass her. Also maybe she knew and didn’t care 🤷🏻‍♀️

But, what would you have done/wanted someone else to do if you were in that situation? I do live up north in a place where strangers do talk to each other regularly FYI!

YABU - I should have quietly told her that her bum was exposed to the shop

YANBU - leave her to it

I think I must be becoming a prude but I wish people had a little more decorum these days. I don't want to someone's entire arse when I'm out. The other afternoon (5pm) I was walking through town and there was a very drunk women in a very short dress. She was bending over to vomit on the pavement and exposing her entire bum. It looked completely naked so I don't think she was wearing knickers. My Goodness.

Blueink · 24/06/2023 20:07

Bizarre comments on here, she probably wasn’t aware as she was obviously stressed and focussed on dealing with new baby as OP stated.

I saw another parent with a young baby like this, but in a health centre rather than shopping. She was wearing a pre pregnancy dress and don’t think she realised how short it was at the back.

JMSA · 24/06/2023 19:51

Short skirt + thong. She has to have known!

It wouldn’t surprise me if it was deliberate to be honest. Attention seeking is becoming a bit of a trend.

It certainly is.

Some will call it 'dressing for themselves' but I'd say the exact opposite is true.

😂😂😂 this is brilliant.

Interesting to read the split opinions here. Also to be clear I wasn’t offended by the skirt, it was just a bum and we all have them. I just wondered whether there was a consensus on the appropriate thing to do!

She didn’t seem the type to be looking for attention, if anything she seemed a bit stressed looking after her baby in the heat. If she’d just reached down by bending her knees there would have been no flashing issue.

Anyway just a light-hearted question for the evening! When to mind your business and when not to.

Is she bent her knees she might have flashed her minge!

Tinkerbyebye · 24/06/2023 18:47

But if this was the beach no one would bat an eyelid.

Ilovecleaning · 24/06/2023 18:43

Take a photo then show it to her? 🤣🤣🤣

maddiemookins16mum · 24/06/2023 18:42

She knows, she doesn’t care, I’d have pulled a face, I don’t want to see people arses in public thanks.

CarnelianArtist · 24/06/2023 18:12

I might have said, I'd be careful bending in that skirt, when my skirt is short like that I just squat as you never know whose looking. Or I might just think they don't care.

Tessabelle74 · 24/06/2023 18:05

I saw a girl once that her backpack had caused her skirt to ride up exposing her bum to everyone, I tapped her on the shoulder to tell her and when she turned she looked about 16! She was mortified and really grateful I'd told her. I'd hope someone would tell me so I'd definitely whisper to them if I saw it again

Seabreeze18 · 24/06/2023 18:02

Outfits that are a perfectly good length when standing upright can become a bit much when bent over at a child’s level. Many a time I have accidentally flashed people due to forgetting this! Depending on situation I have been more embarrassed than others but honestly these days u see people laying on the beach in their thongs (not even a swim costume but clearly pants)!! So u get used to bodies hanging out! Just ignore and move on!!!

Yogalola · 24/06/2023 17:55

Similar thing happened to me. My friend had bent right over and teenage boys were laughing at her bum, so told my friend and now she won’t speak to me said she preferred not to know!

ImSoShiney · 24/06/2023 00:44

At least is wasn't a massive pubehairy arsehole on full show. Tonight at work a bloke bent over to empty his basket and I'm not kidding, his entire arse was on show. Right down to the browneye 🤢 rotten 🤢 jeans far too big and clearly didn't bother with underwear 🤮 rotten man, rotten 😬

Theoldgreygoose · 24/06/2023 00:36

Surely if someone wears a thong they are well aware of what can happen? It's very different to someone having their skirt caught up in their knickers. I would have left well alone.

Pythacalling702 · 24/06/2023 00:17

EllaRaines · 23/06/2023 21:26

Of course she knew.

I'm old but when I was young mini skirts, hot pants and short shorts were all the rage and you knew if you bent over that anyone could see what you had for breakfast.

I think people have forgotten what life is like with a young baby if they really think this young woman had the intention and time to choose clothes in the morning that enabled her to flash her behind to all and sundry.

Surely you would be out at a pub or club late at night if you wanted to do that, not stood in a queue in a clothes shop!

The far more likely scenario is that having had a broken nights sleep, she saw it was a hot day outside, and grabbed the first two items of summer clothing that she could find, and they didn’t fit her quite as well as they did before having the baby.

I hate ‘I would want to know, so I’m telling you’ people. No, you want to embarrass someone.

I would not want to be told, and if I ever noticed myself be able to tell myself that no one else noticed.

I once wore a dress inside out on the school run and an ‘I would want to know’ woman let me know 😄 just let me live in ignorance woman!

It's more embarrassing to find out hours later.

thirdfiddle · 23/06/2023 23:57

Last summer I was walking and couldn't help noticing the girl walking in front of me wearing a pair of what I'm assuming she'd call shorts - but consisting of basically a waistband with a modesty strip attached, so her entire bum cheeks were visible.

Then half the secondary school girls I see walking to school have skirts that barely cover.
"Young people these days tut."

Unless there's an obvious wardrobe malfunction like someone's skirt is tucked into their waistband, I probably wouldn't say anything as I'd assume they know what they're choosing to wear and I wouldn't want to embarrass them for the rest of their outing until they can change.

Judgyjudgy · 23/06/2023 23:57

Doggymummar · 23/06/2023 19:30

I would ave told her. I saw a school girl the other day and her skirt was hooked up with her back pack. I wound the car window down to let her know. Very greatful teen.

I had this happen to me, was walking for about 20 minutes on a busy street, I can't believe no one told me. I would have said something

FarmGirl78 · 23/06/2023 23:55

This is Mumsnet so of course no you shouldn't have said anything. Because her showing her bum is only an issue because all men are sex pests and she should be free to go out naked and its the bastard sex abusing men who are the issue and why are you body shaming her when its the men not her bum thats the issue its the men THE MEN YOU HEAR ME!! ITS ALL OF THE MEN! 🙄

Armychefbethebest · 23/06/2023 23:33

You don't live in Burnley do you lol x

Moveoverdarlin · 23/06/2023 23:32

I would have smiled to myself and moved on. When I had a young baby and was in that stage where you take the whole travel system out with you and have to fold it down, lift it in to the boot etc, and on a hot summers day wore an M&S chino type skirt. After dismantling the pram several times and bending down I realised skirts and prams don’t mix, I opted for shorts for the rest of that summer. Saying that, I wouldn’t have worn a thong, that makes things 10 times worse.

nettie434 · 23/06/2023 23:32

TattiePants · 23/06/2023 19:35

I would always tell someone if their skirt was tucked in their knickers etc but in this case I would assume she knew what was on show and left her to it.

Same here!

RobertaFirmino · 23/06/2023 23:17

If it's something someone can easily fix there and then, like this or a skirt in knickers then I'll let them know. Something that can't be immediately sorted, like see through leggings , I wouldn't say anything.

Last night I was picking up a DC from the station. I was waiting at the bottom if the escalators. As I looked up for her a very beautifully dressed young woman was coming down in a short dress. Make up perfect, great fitted dress hair to perfection. Unfortunately I could only focus on the fact that her labia were out for the world at such an angle. I wanted to tell her as I am 100% sure she wouldn't have known that from this view all was on show. However I wussed out and let her walk past me.
