Most women hoover above toilet seat in public toilets to pee?

I was out this weekend and had to use the toilet to pee. I normally hoover above toilet seat to pee in public toilets and was thinking to myself this is difficult especially if I need to do a long pee🙈😂 Is this what most women do too or am I being extra germ conscious and should just wipe the seat and sit down? Sorry if tmi but I'm just curious

I always hover, unless I'm in my own house and even then I tend to hover.

I'll often hover if I think the toilet seat is cold.

magicstar1 · 07/06/2023 10:32

It depends on the toilet and how clean it looks.

I do however always have a good look at the back of the seat after an incident in a nightclub years ago. I hovered over the seat for a wee (thank God I did!), flushed and left. The next girl in let a scream of disgust and when I looked back in, someone had left a big log on the back of the seat which I could have sat on.
I had to explain it wasn't me, but I don't think she believed me at all.

Since I got several infections from sitting on public loos, I always always hover. Or, as my friend used to say, I "do the eagle" 😂

Unless I have one of those toilet seat covers with me. They're great for travelling.

Did you have broken skin on your bottom at the time

I have never hovered above a toilet seat. I sit on it, as is intended.
I have caught many things in my life, none of them as a consequence of sitting on toilet seats.

Indeed!

I was in my 20s before I was even aware that some women "hover" and then realised that it must be them who are responsible for pee on the seats.

I'm 65 on Saturday, have always sat on toilet seats and haven't once caught anything from doing so.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 07/06/2023 10:29

I cannot hover. My hips and knees are all out of alignment so I’d fall over!

Because of this I hate hoverers because they leave piss all over the seat!

MintGreenLife · 07/06/2023 10:27

@Aprilx this is the opposite for me...I must have some kind of backwards bladder or something! As someone that has suffered recurrent UTIs and has had various tests and investigations including an IPV, I found that if I hovered at the end of going for a pee, there was always a little left and hovering allowed me to pass it, as one of the tests showed that I wasn't fully emptying my bladder when sitting. Curious.

KetoQueen · 07/06/2023 10:27

I hate the hoverers! They leave poss on the seat and a pile of toilet paper on the side half the time too

Genuine question - what infections did you get and how were they traced to sitting in a public toilet?

If the loo was such a health hazard, did the council close it down for infection control?

Trinity65 · 07/06/2023 10:25

To answer your question, OP, I do not hover. I did when I was little as Mum took me in the Loos then but as an adult, nope.
DM hovers but never leaves a mess. Apparently,
I suppose it comes down to choice at the end of the day

ohtowinthelottery · 07/06/2023 10:24

No, I don't hover. And I'm very nearly 60 and as far as I'm aware, in all those years, I've never caught anything by sitting on a toilet seat.

BarbaraofSeville · 07/06/2023 10:23

Threads like this sadden me because we're so incredibly fortunate in this country to have access to sanitation and people don't appreciate this and are stupidly weird about using a toilet that someone else has also used. Get over yourselves FFS.

Next time you're in a public toilet, maybe read some of the charity posters about the teenage girls who don't go to school during their periods because they don't have access to period products or washing facilities, the people who have to walk for miles to collect water or those who can't access toilets at all.

Or have a read of https://toilet-stories.wateraid.org/

Toilet Stories

Globally, one in four people don’t have a decent toilet of their own. Read and share these #ToiletStories and help demand this human right for everyone, everywhere.

I used to do this until my Dyson got too unwieldy to lug round the shopping mall so now I just take a dustpan and brush instead.

😆😆

LabelleLabelle · 07/06/2023 10:22

I’m not going to catch something on the backs of my legs so I sit down

Lift seat up (with loo roll); hover. No tinkle left for others to sit on. Hate public loos, but couldn't life without them.

But then you're using your hands to touch the seat.
Omg some people
😂

Sirzy · 07/06/2023 08:02

I thought it was hovering which actually poses more risk as it increases the chance of UTIs and similar?

@Sirzy

I am going back a very long time now, but I did my degree 1989-1992 and did a lot of medical statistics (I am a mathematician not a medic). I remember we did a study on women than hovered over public loo seats and yes you are correct, there are issues because hovering means that the bladder is not properly emptied because the woman is not fully relaxed and this can lead to issues such as UTIs. I think that was the gist of it, but as I say, a long time ago.

tattygrl · 07/06/2023 10:21

No 😂 I sit down and relax!! I'm not sitting in chair pose/squat position just to avoid some germs potentially getting on the backs of my legs/bum which will get showered later anyway.

Once my DH took Ds into the mens' and suggested that he sit on the seat inside the cubicle. DS was too young to negotiate (he never even needed to go). It almost resulted in divorce.

I'm hoping the scenario was you mentioned he should have hovered and DH wanted to divorce you for being such a neurotic, fussing, paranoid pansy of a wife.

FarmGirl78 · 07/06/2023 10:15

That's not flush water on the seat, that's the wee of the a hoverer.

It could be either - or both!

Poppy61 · 07/06/2023 10:17

Mumsnet, add an edit button. Quite sure it's not that difficult or that expensive to upgrade the site!

lieselotte · 07/06/2023 10:17

I've always sat down and have reached 50 without catching anything horrible. I bet hovering makes you slower as well and makes the queues to use ladies loos even longer. Just sit down!

I always laugh when a loo hasn't flushed properly and woman walks out again instead of using it. Do you think someone else's poo is going to jump out and infect you? But then, when I need to go, I need to go, and I don't worry about the condition of the loo (I might care if there were cockroaches in it, but thankfully it's never been quite that bad!) - I suppose you can wait for a cleaner cubicle if you are not desperate.

CreepingJenny · 07/06/2023 10:17

Stravaig · 07/06/2023 10:05

I sit down. My body is covered in an amazing invention called skin. It keeps everything inside safely protected. It also lets me go out in the rain without washing away.

😂

Boom! @ShowOfHands

I don't and never have. What exactly do you think is going to happen if you actually sit on a loo? Obviously if there's water from the flush on there I'll wipe it with loo roll first.

That's not flush water on the seat, that's the wee of the a hoverer.
