People who don't move out the way on the pavement

Is it just me or is this getting worse?
You're walking along, someone (or a group of people) come the other way, you both need to move slightly to pass without colliding. Only they don't.

It used to be a thing I noticed men doing - I got so annoyed with having to step into the gutter/press myself against a wall to avoid them, I stopped doing it and let them walk into me. At which point they invariably apologised!

But it seems to happen so much more frequently now, and not with men - usually a couple or a group of women.
Do they honestly not notice you? Not care? Just expect you to disappear out their way?

I said excuse me to a man who was blocking the pavement waiting for his dog to pee against a tree beside a busy A road, and he actually said ‘can’t you walk in the road? ‘ . Bizarre.

It’s the worst when you get groups of 3+ people (who in my experience tend to be students or elderly ladies) who crab walk alongside each other blocking the whole pavement.

Yes this really boils my piss!!!!

lieselotte · 13/10/2024 15:17

I was out the other day and a young guy moved over to my side of the pavement to make me move. I just stopped dead to make him go round me and he went into the road rather than keep to the left hand side of the pavement. I really don't know what is wrong with people.

I've see a recent rise in the hand-holding couples again as well. And they cross the road even though they see you coming and then walk very slowly in front of you, which means you have to go in the road to get round them.

I am constantly irritated by people. It's not good for my blood pressure!

a man did this to me the other day when i was out with my DD. I was walking a canal route, keeping to the left side, I swear he looked at where i was walking and deliberately walked over to my side to make me move. DD had zipped away on her scooter down another path so wasn’t in his way. He was all smiley and gave a pleasant and enthusiastic hello as he approached. I didn’t even make eye contact, looked annoyed and barely stepped aside. I offered a gruff hi (annoyed i even did this) to which he seemed taken back by.

Oh this is an old thread! Still stands!

All manners and courtesy are things of the past. I believe we need a public campaign for improving this, it's leading to rage attacks that we used to have on roads. Now you have people on electric bikes and scooters on pavements, using phones then bumping into people then kicking off, loud music/phone conversations. This is all day every day particularly in big cities. People are loud in cafes, gardens, homes, cars and I honestly believe it's contributing to the mass deterioration of mental health. No one ever gets challenged and people are abusive to public facing staff without consequence. Going to the shops used to be a normal activity you didn't think about, now I find I have to avoid aggressive kids and adults when I just go out for a loaf of bread!🥖

Ansdelllibrary123 · 28/09/2024 15:16

they expect you to move...and they suffer badley with double standards, as they wont....so i dont move and we stand looking at each other, they usualy move then lol..

Also, having just spent a weekend in Germany, I noticed how good (on the whole) their pavement discipline is. They walk on the right. Just as I advocate that we should walk on the left here. It gets rid of 90% of awkward situations.

That said, I still saw a family scatter all over the place in panic when a cyclist came up behind and rang his bell on a shared path...

What about those who are parked half bumped up a kerb and leave their car door open so no one can physically pass? I get this all the time on the school run and they take their goddam time “sorry one moment just strapping the kids in” rather than close the door to let people pass then continue.

I had this with a Sainsburys van. I closed the door as I walked past and he yelled at me, so I told him he shouldn't be blocking the pavement. We had a bit of a set-to but fortunately there was a bloke coming in the opposite direction who agreed with me.

Sadly plenty of MNers think it's fine to park on pavements (usually while leaving their engines running).

I wish I hadn't read this thread because I'm noticing this so much now and it's pissing me off. Before I always just used to move automatically because it was easier but now I'm getting irritated by people (mostly men or groups) expecting me to move, even when I have a pram.

Hand holding couples are the worst, terrified their relationship will spontaneously end if they momentarily let go of each other to allow you through. I refuse to go into the road anymore. I used to all the time in covid especially when I was out for a run. No more!

Oh for sure 😁
I had a ridiculous situation a few years ago, walking into a shopping centre. I turned right to walk into a shop. A couple were coming towards me. The woman had passed by, before I turned. The logical thing for the man to do would have been to walk by on my other side. They weren't holding hands at the time 😁but he squeezed past as though if he didn't walk exactly where she had, well who knows 🤣hell fire and damnation I suppose.

I just walk on now. Tired of giving away to inconsiderate people.

Againstmachine · 25/05/2023 18:16

Annoys hell out of me, I've started when approaching them leading with my shoulder to make them move out of way.

DangerousAlchemy · 25/05/2023 18:13

@SoupDragon I beg to differ. a) I didn't call her a moron. I just think she was a moron. b) I doubt she even heard my leprosy comment as she was 20 feet away from me. She endangered herself & the lives of her 2 dogs for no reason.

@amylou8 those crazy times! I was walking along a very wide (completely empty) pavement during one lockdown (easily enough room for 6 people to walk abreast) & a lady with 2 dogs on the lead glared at me and dragged her dogs into the MIDDLE of the road to pass me (it was a 40 mph road and she was on a bend!) She walked down the centre of this road rather than pass me on a huge pavement 🤣🤣 absolutely mental. I called back to her 'I haven't got leprosy!' 🤣 what a moron

I'm not sure you come out of that story looking any better.

DangerousAlchemy · 25/05/2023 16:43

amylou8 · 24/05/2023 14:07

We need covid back, when people were literally throwing themselves into traffic to avoid passing you in the pavement 😂😂 I still laugh at the insanity of it.

I take great enjoyment in clashing elbows with people who don't move, or giving them a firm clunk with my bag. Dopey twats.

inloveandmarried · 25/05/2023 15:51

YouJustDoYou · 24/05/2023 12:02

I walk everywhere, I've only noticed it mostly from young males, so I play Patriarchy Chicken and see if I can make them move when I don't.

Exactly this. I'm short and most men are head and shoulders taller. The amount of times I'm expected to change course by men who just don't seem to see me.

I now stop dead until they pass me, then I carry on. They always look a bit surprised their chosen path was blocked. It's that momentary look of confusion on their faces. I no longer get banged into though.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 25/05/2023 14:45

Sometimes I'm tempted to become Boudicca and put spikes onto the outside of my bag (I won't do it though of course).

Nordicrain · 25/05/2023 14:08

I've noticed this too. It's since lockdown. I get it a lot when I run - when I am running towards people I move to the side and expect them to do the same, but they just don't, forcing me to either run REALLY close to them or out on the verge. I don't know why you wouldn't just move over a bit.

I've also noticed - again since lockdown - so many people walking and looking at their phones as they go. Especially in London. It's scary and I wonder how people aren't getting injured all over the place.

fetchacloth · 25/05/2023 14:05

"Mobile phone gazers are an increasing issue though. The worse ones are men who deliberately shoulder slam"

Those are just the worst. I nudge them back harder😡

Fighterofthenightman1 · 25/05/2023 09:36

I think people overall now are just more selfish and entitled. Basic manners are lacking.

phoenixrosehere · 25/05/2023 09:10

Sigmama · 25/05/2023 07:13

I just simply say excuse me please, no big deal, happy to share the space, but don't get me started on pedestrians who cross the road whilst looking at their phones and wearing headphones

I’d feel the same way if I didn’t have to ask several times and people stop pretending they don’t see and hear me when I do ask or didn’t see me approaching and still thought to not move to the side so I don’t have to ask and interrupt a conversation.

Plumbear2 · 25/05/2023 08:55

I was walking in a crowded area. People coming in the opposite direction where fine but a man in front of me going in the same direction suddenly decided to stop, turn around and walk into me. Of course it was my fault for not knowing he as going to do this 🙄. I had a wall on one side and people coming from the other direction on the other, I'm sure he expected me to just vanish.

Sigmama · 25/05/2023 08:25

Pedestrianise the road and make more space for people - would be nice

carduelis · 25/05/2023 07:41

I live in a village with narrow pavements and am frequently forced into the road with my two small children by people going for a run with an empty buggy…
