to be alarmed that more and more places are allowing dogs?

Just went to Wilko recently who had a sign up saying all dogs welcome. Went to a bistro and they allowed dogs too. Had lunch listening to small yappy dogs.

Since when did it become acceptable to allow dogs into shops and food places?

MNHQ - time for a separate section for the rabid dog haters please.

I'll second that! There's at least 3 threads a week!

Yes, I have a dog, who I take to the pub, on public transport or into those shops I think are appropriate, so pet shops or animal charity shops. I don't take her into cafes, restaurants, food shops etc. I know Wilkos is dog friendly but our local one is in a shopping centre that you're not allowed dogs in, so I've never taken her in there even if I wanted . She's a very well behaved dog, and in fact other customers/passengers etc have only become aware of her as we're leaving.

On the rare occasion I take her to the shops (mainly on holiday) it's me and my husband together so one of us stays outside with her.

She got the Dog of the Month Award on Instagram in one pub we took her too :prouddogmum:

I saw a large dog pee on some maxi dresses in M&S not long ago. The owner didn't notice, but I pointed it out to the staff. Disgusting.

How could they not notice? surely they were pretending not to notice?

Yes, we know the topic has been aired frequently, but it’s clearly bothering plenty of people and I agree that there’s been a huge increase in the number of places that welcome dogs.

I’m not a dog lover and I prefer venues where they aren’t allowed. That’s difficult to find these days and I’m sure there are plenty of people who welcome being able to take their dogs wherever they go. I was looking at the restrictions for dogs on the local beach yesterday. From the beginning of the month they aren’t allowed on the beach and must be on leads on the prom. I’d be very surprised if either of those rules have any effect.

i am going to assume that these businesses have had dog-owners asking if they can bring their dogs in. As business owners they have then made a calculated decision to welcome them.

So the thing you need to do is ask if they are a dog free zone, and on hearing a negative, tell them that's a shame as you will now go elsewhere. If enough people do that, the business will recalculate who they will make most money from.

But you have to speak up instead of doing that British thing of saying nothing but complaining about it.

Oblomov23 · 26/04/2023 13:01

I don't like it. And I love dogs. I just don't think it's appropriate.

I live in a region known for it’s scenery, which means that all the pubs I can think of locally are dog friendly. Our regular place for a weekend pub meal is right near a caravan park, so it’s usual for there to be multiple dogs under the tables.
I have never once seen any of the above happening, no soiling, no milling, and definitely no getting sick!

Also this. I’ve never seen dogs going to the loo in a cafe or tripping up a waiter.

I think he was a labrador? So not really small although I think still a puppy? and it was just half of one of those kids thin small dairy milk bars

Oh he'll be fine then. A lab pup is bigger than my fully grown adult. I bet he was pleased with himself.

Owner was being ridiculous although to be fair the internet does overhype the dangers of certain foods.

Wiennetta · 26/04/2023 13:00

Up to the business. Lots of cafes let in dogs, looking around on an average weekday most customers are students, parents and people popping in for a coffee on the dog walk. If you don’t like going to a cafe where they have dogs you could….go somewhere else?

7Worfs · 26/04/2023 12:16

It’s ill-thought because once it’s allowed it can get out of hand very easily.

No one would mind one small dog sleeping under a table, but what about 5-10 dogs milling about/yapping/tripping up a waiter/getting sick on the floor?

If your favourite establishment starts allowing dogs just write to them saying you will no longer be going there and explain why ☝🏻🤠

Where would that be?

Try Google. Check websites and business Facebook pages. I'm sure you can find somewhere.

SquashPenguin · 26/04/2023 12:58

I love taking my dog to wilkos. I always go armed with wipes and tissues should he have an accident, but he’s also a pug and doesn’t go knocking anything over. The staff all come over to say hello to him. He usually finds a wayward Millions sweet or five to enjoy somewhere too.

I don’t know how people on here who hate dogs this much even leave their houses.

ComtesseDeSpair · 26/04/2023 12:57

I always wonder why owners bring them tbh. Some dogs seem to cope with it okay but a lot I’ve seen just seem really stressed. I wouldn’t want to be on the floor in an unfamiliar and noisy environment with strangers’ feet thumping around me and almost (or actually) treading on me, and I can’t imagine dogs like it either. I’ve seen so many dogs trodden on or kicked or hit with chair legs because people haven’t seen them.

Or don't allow dogs in places they have no business being in. Like places that serve food and drinks. You may be happy with dirty dogs running around you when you eat but other people are not. And yes- all dogs are dirty. Your 'perfectly clean' animal still licks other animals arses.

Well exactly. Some people don't mind, so why shouldn't business owners be allowed to decide if they're going to allow dogs or not? Why automatically ban it to appeal to the non-dog lovers?

Business owners are the ones who will suffer if they find their profits are dropping by allowing dogs. The risk is theirs. It is up to people to check if dogs are allowed or not and make their decision based on this.

There is so little "chocolate" in a modern chocolate bar that unless he was tiny or your daughter was eating one of the dark luxury bars he'll almost certainly be fine.

My older one has had a few kitkats in the past with no ill effects.

Cake is far more of a danger in a cafe. Mine once got hold of two large slices of homemade carrot cake (with sultanas) and gobbled the lot. That was an expensive vet bill.

don't go.to.places that allow dogs if it's a problem for you.

BreviloquentBastard · 26/04/2023 12:31

I don't really get it to be honest. I have three dogs, I love dogs, they're great... but I don't want to take them shopping with me or to restaurants or pubs, if I'm going out they stay home. That's the benefit of dogs over children, you don't have to take them with you everywhere you go!

I feel like COVID and lockdown produced a lot of bad dog owners who never did separation work with their dogs so can't leave them alone for fear they'll destroy the house. My three can be happily left for hours if necessary, they just loaf on the sofa until we get back.

Exactly this

Elphame · 26/04/2023 12:52

CrescentstarMoon · 26/04/2023 12:46

I hope he was ok though I know chocolate can be toxic for dogs, he did look massively happy with himself I have to say 😂

I used to work at a unit for severely autistic people we used to go for walks round the grounds. Members of the public thought it was appropriate to let their dogs off lead and bound up to severely autistic people and jump up. I told them to leash their dog as they have severe autism (very strong and could severely injure the dog if they became scared). They said I have autism too and he's friendly, I was actually 😒. Why would you walk around near a MH unit with a dog unleashed. It's putting the dog in danger some people are thick.

Well that ,up to the owner isn't it?
if they want to welcome dogs that's entirely their prerogative and if posters on mumsnet wish to stay away from. Those establishments than that's up to.them.

ThatFraggle · 26/04/2023 12:50

You'd like the dogfree board on Reddit. It charts the rise of dog worship culture.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 26/04/2023 12:50

Everyone talks about this being such a new thing but my mam used to take her dog into work with her (cashier in my very popular bank in a city centre). Dog would sit under her desk all day and even customers would bring in treats. This was the 70s.

Dogs in local corner shops, dogs in pubs, dogs in the post office, dogs on buses have been a regular thing my whole life and im 30+. It's only really been the big high street retailers and restaurants that haven't been dog friendly

HermioneWeasley · 26/04/2023 12:49

I don’t hate dogs, I think they’re lovely. But I also think they’re unhygienic and I don’t want them in food shops and cafés. I am also allergic. I despair of places that all allow dogs in and unfortunately that’s every cafe in my village so I’m a bit stuck.

yep dog bashing/ threads every day, sometimes several a day. Actually someone started a thread last week asking why are there so many dog hating threads!

alloalloallo · 26/04/2023 12:47

I have a dog, I don’t take her into shops or anything like that, but I do take her into dog friendly cafes and pubs. She’s well behaved, sits under my chair and doesn’t bark. I’ve never actually witnessed anything other than well behaved dogs in any pub or cafe.

There are plenty of pubs, cafes, etc in my area where dogs aren’t allowed.

My friend owns a cafe and for her allowing dogs makes 100% financial sense.

The vast, vast, majority of her all year round customers are dog owners/walkers and since allowing dogs her trade has massively increased.
