Using a snooker cue to change channels on TV.
Polishing the chrome on your car.
Thinking being felt up by creepy old men, or work colleagues, was perfectly acceptable.

I can remember a friend of mine had a box on her TV which you fed £1 coins into around 20 years ago.

Which reminds me, gas and electric meters which you fed money into and every so often a man from the gas / electric board would come and empty it.

recording on vhs all my boyband performances on TOTP or Saturday morning shows and sitting through music you don't like/not interested in as you don't know if they are going to turn up and just sit there ready to record just in case.
all through the 90s/early 00s i had so many tapes that was watched so regularly.

these days they are all available on YouTube and TikTok so easily

and yes i watch them regularly so its made my life(obsession)so much easier

I remember when it was normal to rent your tv (and other white goods).
My parents took advantage of this is the 60s by only renting in the winter months as their way of restricting screen time when they'd rather we were outside playing.

A rag and bone man, who would sharpen your knives, scissors etc in exchange for your rags.
The coal man.
The man from the Pru. He would call on a Friday evening for your insurance subs.
Milkmen in a lot of cases.
Going to the post office to pay bills and tax your car.
Car tax discs.
Littlewoods / Vernon's football pools man.
Pinching your mum's clothes line so you and your friends could skip on the road... laying it flat if a car came.
Playing out with your friends until the streetlights came on.

Hand writing my uni work.

I remember paying someone to word process my dissertation and save it to floppy disk!

AcrossthePond55 · 09/03/2023 22:52

Listening in on the extension as your BFF calls your crush to (not so) subtly ask him if he 'likes you'. And to really date myself.....party lines.

Going out with friends and your parents having no way to get in touch with you.

Getting the strap at school
Spangles sweets and gypsy cream biscuits

Was the siren when there was an escapee ??? 😮

Every week. They tested it on a Tuesday I seem to remember.

Going to the Edinburgh Festival fringe, after phoning around to find somewhere to stay, then sending a cheque for the first night as a deposit, having the programme sent in the post, and phoning up to book tickets.

Steve Coogan won the Perrier Award that year.

Watching the festival fireworks from Princes Street with about quarter of a million others with no tickets and no barriers

Doing a degree without internet. Having to go to library to search for journals and photocopy them

The truck coming round on a Sunday evening with lots of crates on the back where you could buy bottles of limeade, Cherryade, cream soda and all sorts of weird and wonderful things. Once the bottle was empty you’d hand it back the following week to get pennies off your next bottles.

Ha yes and we used to walk around and pick up empties in fields for pocket money as well as the then glass Strongbow bottles.

I’ve still got a plug on a chain in my bathroom… some tech obviously just passes me by!

I bought a new one the other week! Didn't realise they are passé!

I have a picture of me somewhere sitting on a circus elephant in Great Yarmouth when I was about 6, can’t see that coming back any time soon !!

Also remember wishing the library was open on a Sunday when I was small as we used to love going there. Ironically now the library IS open on a Sunday we probably wouldn’t have gone since the internet has arrived since then 😬.

Our swimming pool was salt water - they used to have travelling dolphin shows!

Aphrathestorm · 09/03/2023 22:33

Actual price tags on food

A bed pan
An outside/garden toilet
A lean to bathroom
A coal fire
Those old index cards in libraries
The yellow pages
AOL teen chat rooms
