Quiet and introverted type ?
A future date described himself as this in his profile.
What are the dark sides ?
Sounds a bit wanky or is it a thing ?

We had to complete one at work. Rubbish.

It is mystifying how it remains in use in business settings, especially as there are much better, much more powerful and useful, personality tests available

It is indeed. And wouldn't it just be the case that those who had to fill one out would do it with the aim getting the result that they think is most favourable to their employer?

vaccinistatotebagchicbarista · 25/02/2023 15:55

I think it’s based on some type of pseudo science but I see it kind of like horoscopes - if someone lists a lot of positive traits that are supposed to fit you, you’re not exactly going to disagree. And seeing as not many of us sit down and over analyse our flaws, we’ll probably believe what they say about our flaws too.

Nevertheless it’s quite a fun little exercise, had to use it a lot in university or work training sessions

I don;t understand why people are comparing it to astrology. The MB test is literally just a list of traits. You pick them yourself. If it's wrong then you are chosing the wrong traits.

Astrology assigns random traits to you based on your time of birth.

Because they both perform a similar function for people who are drawn to them. They appeal to people who want to be given a narrative about why they are the way they are, or why certain things happen to them.

Isn't the j in this judgy? Which is a really horrible thing to be. I never get why anyone announces this personality type as if it's a positive. Swipe left.

Human beings all judge other people. It's an innate and fundamental function of the brain.

Either you are brain dead, or you are making judgements. No one is an exception to this.

Not least people who claim to be non judgemental.

Myers-Briggs is a load of bollocks. It’s based on Yung’s theory of personality, which is in itself a load of bollocks. It is mystifying how it remains in use in business settings, especially as there are much better, much more powerful and useful, personality tests available. It’s like buying a cart horse when you could buy a Ferrari for the same price. If you want your personality tested properly go to a psychologist, not a ‘business consultant’. A proper psychologist wouldn’t be seen dead using Myers-Briggs, or that colours one, which is basically just Myers-Briggs made even more stupid.

I'm with you on that.

I'm ENFP, according to MB, and the only bit that rang true was something about being likely to get into trouble at school.

A few months earlier, one of my woo friends had done my astrological chart. Tbh, it seemed more accurate than MB, which shows what a lot of bollocks MB is.

LookingGlassMilk · 25/02/2023 15:43

I really like the myers briggs test, I think it is more useful than other personality tests because it makes the distinction between the n/s types.

I think people are often confused by what they mean. Intuitive doesn't mean using your intuition. It means that when you view situations you like to think about all the possibilities, you leap forward a few steps thinking about all the different possible outcomes. You spot patterns and you like theorising and abstract thinking.

Sensors prefer to deal with the facts that are available in the present moment. They're less concerned with possibilities and more concerned with current realities.

In January/Feb 2020 when Covid was beginning, the N types were wanting to discuss the future possibilities and the S types were shouting them down.

coconotgrove · 25/02/2023 15:37

Like others on this thread, if a man stated his Myers Briggs personality type on his dating profile, or worse, mentioned it in a message to me, I always avoided.

For me, it was simply that out of the many many things someone could say about themselves, this is not something I would find of interest. I strongly believe they are declaring their type in the hope that you/I/whomever is reading the profile will look it up and ask them questions. To my mind, it's a bit of a red flag for someone doing the minimum. Not a good start.

C8H10N4O2 · 25/02/2023 15:37

Its long debunked pseudopsychology and as meaningful and reliable as someone putting up their sign of the zodiac or the meaning of their name via numerology.

Might as well throw a magic 8 ball and write in whatever that says.

stripedsox · 25/02/2023 15:33

More total bollox on social media.

ReneBumsWombats · 25/02/2023 15:09

Similarly, people seem to think introvert = likes staying in with a good book and extrovert = likes parties and noise and it really isn't that simple.

Exactly. This one drives me bonkers.

notprincehamlet · 25/02/2023 15:07

I guess it's a thing in the same way that the Festrunk Brothers announcing that they are two wild and crazy guys is a thing

ShowOfHands · 25/02/2023 15:07

It's such a load of old shite.

Human beings are intrinsically similar to each other, whilst also being utterly unique. It's why Derren Brown is so good at what he does. We are predictable creatures with a mixture of limited traits. It's the combination which is of interest I suppose. But it's like the lottery. There are only ever 49 numbers for example, but chances of nailing down the six that will be selected in advance, impossible. Still only 49 numbers. But we ascribe patterns to them, pick meaningful numbers etc, describe certain combinations as special.

Additionally, a lot of people I know are shit at recognising their own traits (me too probably) and claim all sorts about where they sit on spectrums of personality and belief when everybody else would describe them completely differently.

Similarly, people seem to think introvert = likes staying in with a good book and extrovert = likes parties and noise and it really isn't that simple.

People do like to find boxes in which to sit though. It's why it's wildly popular with teens, same as astrology. They want to understand themselves and the world. Nowt wrong with that I suppose. Most people grow out of a love of Myers Brigg, as you'd expect as they mature.

There's always a "rare, special" personality type, have you noticed? Like Indigo children. Or people who describe themselves as empaths. My mate who is a psychologist reckons the only universal trait is that everybody believes they're a bit different or special. And she says if you verbalise it, the other person will always protest they're not like that. So actually different and special because they don't think they're different and special. Like a worm eating itself...

JaninaDuszejko · 25/02/2023 14:56

It's complete bunkum. The test asks someone what they think they are like then it tells them 'you are what you think you are'. It assumes people have complete self knowledge about themselves. We don't, we're all the unreliable narrator of our own story.

This x 100 ^

We may think we look after others' needs before our own (for example), but our spouses, families, colleagues may see it somewhat differently, and provide plenty of evidence to the contrary.

The MB test only tells you what you think about yourself!

Jarstastic · 25/02/2023 14:58

I always come out as either INFP or ENFP.

I have assumed that quite a few people on AIBU are INFJs.

You are likely ENFP in that case - it's the most introverted type of extrovert so often gets a false introvert result on tests, depending on your current mood.

I understand that INFPs do not typically mistype as ENFP which is how you can tell.

ENFPs are actually the most likely to be mistyped as something else.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 25/02/2023 15:01

Not many people are truly very introvert, or truly very extrovert, most people are introvert/extrovert at different times in different situations (and what's going on with their lives).

I think someone who heavily defined themselves as either introvert or extrovert wouldn't be for me, so it might be handy on that front!

Greatly · 25/02/2023 14:59

Arthurflecksfacepaint · 25/02/2023 13:12

I can never get through the test, or any other test like it without stopping because I am bored shitless and my brown hurts. I’ve often wondered what that says about me.

Me too 😅

menopausalbloat · 25/02/2023 14:59

I am one of those, apparently. I still have no idea what that entails though.

Jarstastic · 25/02/2023 14:58

BertieBotts · 25/02/2023 14:56

Oh I really like that teenager quiz - it's useful because it shows you that you don't have to tick every single box to be an extravert - most people have aspects of both sides after all.

However it would be useful if it did actually give you your Myers-Briggs code!

And I'm a fucking clownfish 😂Hmm Which is stupid.

JaninaDuszejko · 25/02/2023 14:56

Fairislefandango · 25/02/2023 14:56

Well I just took a test (even though I think they are bollocks Grin) because I'm bored and procrastinating! It said I'm INTJ, which is apparently the rarest type among women. I reckon I might get a different result depending on what mood I was in though.

I read the description afterwarfs, and it was pretty accurate, but that's not exactly rocket science - I told it what I was like by the questions!

NowDoYouBelieveMe · 25/02/2023 14:54

Yep, it's a magnet for people who need an ego boost (they're great and wise and special, but sadly misunderstood Wink). And also gullible.

Jokes really bc this forum is overcrowded with insensitive and emotionally immature posters!
