To think that Stacey Dooley isn't a realistic new mum role model for women

I picked out Stacey Dooley because I've just been reading about her but I know this applies to many other celebrities. She gave birth to her daughter in January and she's already back to work and attending events. She's also posted photos of her slim post baby body and trendy, flattering outfits on social media. Obviously it depends on your experience of pregnancy and giving birth but does this image of post natal motherhood put pressure on women? To me, I see it as unrealistic for the majority of women, including myself and my own experiences. Why can't celebrities share more honest, typical reflections of early motherhood that the majority can relate to.

What do people think?

Agree. Stacey Solomon is another one. But they are celebrities and influencers, they aren't paid to be realistic.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 22/02/2023 14:35

She's a celeb. She's in a crowded field and her image is her bread and butter. She needs to keep her profile up.

I wouldn't expect too much reality on instagram.

PurpleButterflyWings · 22/02/2023 14:35

There isn't a single celebrity mother that is a good, realistic new role model for women/mothers. They are all privileged, they all have money, they all have nannies and stylists on tap, and none of them have to worry about finances. (Or having as much time off as they want.)

It really pisses me off. One of the worst offenders, and the most irksome that I've known over the past few years is Myleene Klass. So condescending and patronising. Stacey is pretty much the same.

PurpleButterflyWings · 22/02/2023 14:36

And YES to Stacey Solomon being another one! With her stupid fucking packets of crisps on pegs in her kitchen cupboard. FFS! Hmm

Some ladies do this though don’t they? Yes they are in the minority, but some moms are super slim after birth, and some do return to work early.
As long as they aren’t pushing what they are doing as the correct way to do motherhood, then I don’t really care.
It does help that I don’t have social media so I couldn’t be more ignorant of what celebs are up too.

SalviaOfficinalis · 22/02/2023 14:40

Has she claimed to be a realistic new mum role model for women?

It would be different if she was flogging a diet/workout plan to loose your baby weight quickly, but from glancing at her Instagram she’s just trying on a few suits. Why does she now need to take on the enormous and unpaid responsibility to be a role model for all new mums, instead of continuing to just be a person.

Maybe she wants to post nice pictures of herself. She’s under no obligation to share unflattering, crying, leaking nipple “real mum” type photos. I hate them the most to be honest.

Mrsjayy · 22/02/2023 14:41

Stacy dooley was quite a slim woman pre pregnancy and I don't think she put that much on during pregnancy , anyway I don't think Stacey Dooley or otherwise should be an role model for any woman. and so what if she was at an event shes freelance she probably doesn't get maternity.

SafeMove · 22/02/2023 14:44

There is a surprising US celebrity who has shown quite a realistic view of newborn motherhood, I would NEVER have called it. Her wedding and pregnancy post frequency was OTT but she has been living in her joggers and slippers with no makeup and her post partum bump on show on Instagram since the birth of her baby boy. She has also talked honestly about breastfeeding and staying home. Even when she got dolled up for the inevitable People shoot she was in her slippers and clearly insisted it take place in her home.

I was 24 when I had DS1 and a single Mum and I was out and about in the early days because I was lonely and fed up, I think someone would have judged me for being unrealistic. Different strokes for different folks though. If you are an extrovert going out and socialising is like breathing air.

Mrsjayy · 22/02/2023 14:44

Pay* I've just had a look it was a photoshoot with her wearing high waisted trousers I don't know what you want from.her op ?

NeverendingStory32 · 22/02/2023 14:45

I was thinking Stacey Solomon too! Very irritating.

I quite like Stacey Dooley but it's just annoying to see that.

Sheridan Smith made a good documentary about her struggles with mental health and pregnancy a few years back and it was so refreshing to see a celebrity share a more honest account of it all.

My colleague at work was like this. Only had her bump when pregnant then slim again as soon as she had given birth.

I like Stacey Dooley and I don't think she has to be a realistic new mum role model for women.

Bluevelvetsofa · 22/02/2023 14:45

Stacey Solomon posted a pic of herself holding her new baby and she definitely still looks as though she has a bump.

And a house full of absolute tat that’s she’s made with a glue gun and some pipe cleaners 😂

Why can’t I stop following her Instagram though?

DancingInSlowMotion · 22/02/2023 14:47

I think they should only share the parts of themselves they’re comfortable with. Why should they have to show themselves covered in baby puke or tired of whatever to make others feel better? She’s not responsible for how other mums feel.

It’s not realistic but it’s up to individuals to realise that and not look at it if it upsets them.

Yeah she doesn't need to do anything related to "new mum" .

I like Sheridan Smith too. Her experience may have been totally different to Stacey Dooley's.

See, all that nonsense and you can't look away 😀

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 22/02/2023 14:50

Why is Stacey Solomon using pegs to hang her crisps up?! Who hangs their crisps up?

Or maybe Stacey doesn’t want to share her struggles with the entire world, despite OP feeling entitled to see them all laid bare to make herself feel better.

Im sorry but who are you to say whats a more honest account of pregnancy and childbirth and the post partum period? Some women do sail through it and bounce back straight away. Thats the reality for many women. It just seems like bitter jealousy to be slating these women for "unrealistic" accounts of their lives with newborns simply because they are not overweight, sporting post pregnancy bumps and crying none stop.

FourTeaFallOut · 22/02/2023 14:53

I'm not sure she needs to be realistic, does she? I mean, nobody felt like their holiday plans were inferior when she was trekking through Peru to meet your local friendly tooled up cocaine farmer, so I don't see why anyone would consider her performance of motherhood a bar to measure themselves by?

WeWereInParis · 22/02/2023 14:55

What do you want her to do? Eat more so she's not as slim?
Why does she need to be a role model? Why must she be relatable? She's slim after having a baby - should she not show photos of herself in case someone thinks she's a bad role model?

Cornelious2011 · 22/02/2023 14:56

Maybe they relate to a minority though? There are women out there who bounce back after pregnancy both in body and general mindset and lives. We don't need to ridicule people for being like that. Everyone has different lives and priorities. I carried my baby weight for quite a while, but was out shopping, visiting cafes with friends and attending baby groups 1-2 weeks after I had my dc. I even went for a champagne afternoon tea 3 weeks after given birth (shock horror). I got lots of comments (usually from other mums with kids) about 'how to you manage to do your hair, make up, wear clothes without spew?' Etc etc. I just did. It was important to me that I felt and looked nice. I've never not being able to have a shower, wash my hair, do my make up and wear clean clothes because of my dc.
