AIBU?

I've always had a weird hunch I'm going to die aged 32 - and I'm 31.

Kind of that really
Was once asked in amongst a series of random questions as a silly questionnaire "do you have a secret hunch of when you're going to die" and I replied automatically "at 32" at it's sort of stuck.
Have joked about it for a few years (had to stop after my DP got really cross about it).
Thing is - I turn 32 in July, and whilst my logical brain is trying to be reasonable (how could I possibly know?) stranger things have happened, and my Mum said the least reassuring thing ever when I spoke about it a couple of years ago which was "if you keep thinking it, you'll end up causing it subconciously"

So, Mumsnet, AIBU?

I didn't notice the date when I commented. I'm glad you're still here

Rocknrollstar · 28/01/2025 14:52

My mother knew a woman who died at 32 and my mother was convinced that she would also die at that age. She lived to be 102

Lurkingandlearning · 28/01/2025 14:28

I just gave a thumbs up to a post on page one. They will think I’m nuts. I didn’t notice the date. Anyway I’m glad you were wrong and still alive 👏

TheodoraCrumpet · 28/01/2025 14:18

Glad that I only saw this thread today, so only had to scroll for the update. I had an aunt who always used to say she wouldn't see 70. Neither of her parents did. She's nearly 90 now.

Schleep · 28/01/2025 14:13

It's funny reading back my posts now because shit really hit the fan that March and I was clearly already stressed to the max in that Feb. I wouldn't blame the Universe if it had misread 2023 as a death year for me!

My mum had a premonition years ago she was going to die in a white car. She actually died in hospital

ToBeOrNotToBee · 28/01/2025 13:23

Maybe the old you died and the new one is in her place

NoNoNotI · 28/01/2025 13:09

Thank God you’re still with us 👏🏻

I was always convinced I was never going to make 40 for some reason (I’m now 45).

Schleep · 16/02/2023 18:40

Another way I've tried to look at it is that part of me will die at 32, or a belief I have will die, or something momentous will happen.

Frankly, given the state of my life right now (extreme stress) a huge life upheaval could probably be for the best.

Before I read this, I was going to suggest seeing it as a sort of rebirth/end of one era and start of a next.

Is there anything you would really like to do/try/complete/change? This is your time!

Axelotl · 28/01/2025 13:01

Well done on making it Op

It was convinced my number was up last October, about midway through. Also still here

SockGoddess · 28/01/2025 12:59

Yay OP! I knew you'd make it Grin

HelpMeGetThrough · 28/01/2025 12:35

I've always thought I'm going to be gone before 55.

I'm 52 and in November I almost did, but they got me to the operating theatre in time.

Let's see how close I get this year.

Mummyratbag · 28/01/2025 11:53

I realised half way through this was an old thread. Delighted to hear you are still with us OP! As others have said these intrusive thoughts can be part of OCD.

You, of course, have permission to come back stressed out at 95 to tell us all you are worried again (if I'm around I will be telling the Guiness Book of Records my longevity is down to a lifetime of eating chocolate and playing Wordle whilst avoiding housework and generally procrastinating on MN)

PifandHercule · 28/01/2025 11:25

My grandma had long term health issues and kept going to psychics. One of them told her she will die at 55 years old and she really believed that and was telling everyone that, years in advance.
When she turned 54, she stopped taking all her medication as she was going to die within a year anyway, and guess what happened? She died before her 55th birthday because she stopped her medication.
This is a good example of a self fulfilling prophecy, please be careful what you say to yourself as your mind and therefore decisions you make based on this will make it a reality.

olderbutwiser · 28/01/2025 11:00

I was told I would die before my 40th birthday by some reading my palm when I was 18. Seemed quite reasonable to me at the time.

I’m 66.

Fun update - I'm still alive. I'm 33 - turn 34 in July.
I had a spectacularly shite 2023, so think I potential died internally, but did physically survive!
Hurray!
(A lot of these replies did make me feel better at the time, so thank you)

Congratulations!

XWKD · 28/01/2025 10:58

My friend used to tell me I wouldn't see 40. We used to have a laugh about it -we had an odd sense of humour. I'm well past that now, but she died young.

It's all nonsense.

I went through a phase of something similar many years ago OP. My aunt died suddenly age 40 and I became fixated on the thought that I wouldn’t outlive her. I passed that milestone and thankfully many more since. I’m 70 this year and still hanging on 😊

RSavernake · 18/07/2024 23:46

I used to think the same thing and it was 32 for me as well. I'm now nearly 48. I did split up with boyfriend at 32 and haven't had a significant relationship since, but I'm still here. I've no real advice just letting you know you're not alone.
Oh, didn't know this was an old thread.

KnitFastDieWarm · 18/07/2024 23:28

Jesus, is that you?

Hate to break it to you…just keep an eye of judas 😁

ada0910 · 18/07/2024 23:25

So, how did it go? It’s July 2024 now so I’m assuming you crossed 32?

SockGoddess · 16/02/2023 17:43

I understand, I'm prone to these kinds of thoughts/worries. But I can reassure you that I've been wrong. It's not as scary but I "knew" I would have my first child at 26, and it would be a girl - both totally wrong.

I've had a hunch/been sure that something awful would happen and it hasn't, several times. It's a manifestation of my anxious personality and latching onto worrisome or random thoughts, and I think that's what's happened to you.

How I would deal with this is to rewrite it, and pick a new age. e.g. you were wrong about this, and you now think it will be... 96. Keep telling yourself that and let it settle into your brain, so you have a more distant "target" to place this worry on, if that makes sense.

Thanks so much for this, it's helped me a lot, I have these worries/thoughts too. They came about as I have actually had multiple premonitions about death which did come true but now my brain is on high alert and will make up ages I think all my loved ones are going to die at..
Which as I type is actually totally different to how the premonitions present but in the middle of the nights it's hard sometimes to tell the difference!

JumbleSailor · 03/03/2023 19:44

Shouldn't we be living every day as if it was our last anyway?

Everyotherone · 03/03/2023 19:40

Mine was 25. I couldn’t imagine ever being older than that.

Actually, thinking about it now, despite being nearly twice as old I still feel 25.

Maybe you’ll feel 32 forever?
