To not understand why people turn off read receipts on WhatsApp

I use WhatsApp to chat with friends and family but more often than not, to make actual plans. A friend and couple of family members have started to turn off read receipts. It's so frustrating because if we make plans via WhatsApp and then say we arrange a time to meet, I just have to assume that they have read the message as it appears unread. I don't get all the secrecy as these are family members and friends. It started with them disabling the last seen feature and has graduated to this. Aibu and I should just assume plans are firm whether I hear back or not?

you think that’s bad have you ever been left on read blue ticks and ignored then the person pops back up weeks later acting oblivious

EatAllDay · 10/01/2023 07:06

Why can’t you just call the person??

I think it's bit petty tbh. No one really cares who is/ isn't online or whether they've read/not read a message! I think some people actually think their lives and online status are of great interest to others and they're really not. Some people just like the "drama" of turning off the ticks.
People need to get over themselves.

Today I learned that turning off read receipts is "drama".

Babe, who hurt you?

I agree in principle, personally I don't mind if folk take days to reply, but I lost someone I thought was a good friend because I didn't respond often enough, or quickly enough. I understand why she was p-#%- at me but I was really struggling with life at the time, failed my masters and could have done with some support.
Actually turns out I don't really miss her as it was always about her.....

SpacersChoice · 09/01/2023 21:45

My phone is for me to reply at my leisure and not for people to be up my ass because I was “online” but didn’t read or respond immediately, or because I read but didn’t respond immediately.

Fucking weird behaviour.

If you turn it off because of one person then it's turned off for all
Why do you see it as an affront to you personally? Have you done something to warrant them hiding from you?
Mine was switched off due to my ex deciding to monitor when he thought I was online and who I must be speaking to
Got rid of him but decided I preferred the peace of not being watched

If you read mu op and updates they were the one approaching me and asking me for favours...

WhatsApp turns them off for everyone even if you would rather target specific people, that's why.

I switch them off to prevent abuse of my time by certain individuals without having to cut them off entirely. Everyone else gets receipts turned off as "collateral damage".

ErinAoife · 09/01/2023 21:14

you can still see if they are online even when notification are turn off on WhatsApp. Hi

I turned mine off as my bit h of ex boss had it whilst awaiting company mobile. I didn’t want her to know if I was online quickly while wfh . it turned off fir everyone though.

So why don’t you just call the person if you need an immediate response and they’re not answering….

This. Messages are for if I need to convey a message but it's not urgent. Phone calls are for urgent (or private) matters.

GoAgainstNicki · 09/01/2023 19:12

Whatsapphack · 09/01/2023 19:10

If you highlight the message and press the I at the top tells you if they have read the message.

Dahliasandtea · 09/01/2023 19:09

I turned mine off because I wanted to cut done on screen time. Turning them off meant I couldn’t see if someone else had read my messages to them too…. Which meant I couldn’t go in and keep checking if they had read it. Now I only check WhatsApp when it pings…. Otherwise I would be constantly wondering someone had read them and then anticipating the return. Which is ridiculous really. I’m glad I have turned them off. It also means if I want to think about my reply then I have that time without worrying if the other person is wondering why if they can see I’ve read it havent I replied.

Mandyjack · 09/01/2023 18:36

Next time say in the message can you reply to confirm at the end of your message

laylababe5 · 09/01/2023 18:32

Well then send another message saying you'd appreciate a response asap as you need to make arrangements, and if you don't hear back by a certain time you'll assume plans are not going ahead. I do think you should be communicating your feelings about this situation to the people involved.

laylababe5 · 09/01/2023 18:28

Yes YABU. If they decide to turn them off that's their prerogative. If you really need to confirm plans, phone them.

carlynatasha · 09/01/2023 18:24

I don’t think it’s unreasonable some people do this. Some people just like their privacy and I fully support that. Also you aren’t the only person in their contacts - maybe it is so they limit their visibility etc to other people rather than only you? some people get narky if people don’t reply immediately as others have said so doing this evades any potential agg from certain people.

personally I couldn’t care less, if I’m online on WhatsApp, I’ll reply to who and what I feel like at the time and leave others on read and reply when am ready if it’s a longer conversation I don’t have time for at that time. Some just like their privacy

HimalayaSalts · 09/01/2023 18:19

I do it. That's because I don't want to be pressured into answering messages but at the same time I want to read them.

LifesTooShortForYourNonsense · 09/01/2023 18:11

If you want to read a WhatsApp message without anyone knowing you’ve read it you can click and hold from the Chat screen. iPhone you can anyway.

I do this all the time on the parent chat so I don’t have to respond (to whatever trivial matter they’re wanging on about now🙄)

PleaseCleanTheWholeToilet · 09/01/2023 18:11

People should confirm plans

BUT
Mine are off, means i dont have to reply to people as soon as they message but i can read to it make sure its not important etc

Soosi · 09/01/2023 18:10

Hi. How do you turn off the ticks. Didn’t know you could do this. Thanks.

hotdiggetydog · 09/01/2023 18:09

I had a possessive ex partner who held it over me so I switched them off. I'll reply on my timeframe

csigeek · 09/01/2023 18:07

You don’t set it by person, so it’s turned off for everyone they interact with. I can see why people do it though, just because someone has sent me a message it doesn’t mean I have to immediately respond.

hiddeneverythin · 09/01/2023 18:07

Ooooh I didn't know this was a feature - I'm off to turn my read receipts off now!
