Regarding the pp's encounter with Ruby Wax, I "met" her in a theatre bar just before lockdown, having just seen a play by David Baddiel (who was also there and is THE LOVELIEST MAN ON THE PLANET). My friend was rather tipsy and said loudly "ooh, look, it's Ruby Wax!" (I hadn't noticed, she was standing in a dark corner with some friends) and immediately went over to tell her how much she loved her. I half-expected RW to be a bit dismissive but after 10 minutes she still hadn't come back so my other friend and I went over to find her deep in conversation with her about her daughter, who was in a play in the studio theatre in the same building. She was absolutely delightful and very gracious towards the drunkish woman invading her Saturday night.

Similarly, I was once in a (amateur) play in a theatre at King's Cross in the 90s, we were having an aftershow drink when one of the cast suddenly looked up and ran out of the pub. He returned dragging Su Pollard with him... she was dressed to the nines in something feathery and glittery on her way to a nightclub, but didn't seem to mind one bit that this guy had dragged her into a dodgy boozer to meet his friends (nor did she seem offended that his introductory line had been "Su Pollard!!! My mum loves you!"). Anyway, she was also lovely.

Rudest famous person I've ever met was Suzanne Tully from Eastenders. Again the early 90s, I'd volunteered to man a phone for Children in Need, the centre was in Docklands and the organisers kept bringing the (locally-themed) celebs round to say hello to us, vast majority were lovely (especially Kenny Lynch, even though I didn't have a clue who he was) but she had a face like a slapped arse the whole time, wouldn't do autographs or speak to anyone, just stood there with a gob on her.

I've also been completely ignored by Ian McKellen in a conversation because his attention was completely on my male companion. Which was nice.

Work flies everyone business class so you end up sat with someone well known every once in a while. Over the years Gary Linekar, Johhny Wilkinson (just after they won the World Cup and being mobbed) and Jason Donavan have being next to me and have all been pleasant to the staff and patient with fans. The only person I recall being rude was someone I don’t even know who they were. Tried to get my colleague moved out of her seat because she didn’t want to be in middle of a row in business class on one of the older planes. My colleague said no they wouldn’t like to move and this woman pulled a don’t you know who I am type speech to the stewardess who told her (very politely) she could go and sit in her own seat or they could find her somewhere in economy. She was difficult with cabin crew the entire flight. Some people in general are just like that. Snapping fingers for drinks, never saying thank you, making huge fuss if preferred dinner option not available, asking why my order gets taken before theirs (very frequent flyer at time). It always astounds me how rude people can be particularly about things that are outside the staffs control like delays with weather etc.

Barnowl25 · 24/10/2022 07:17

Ralph Feinnes absolutely delightful. Chatty, funny.

Amanda Richardson - I love her. Had three long chats with her not realising who she was. She is such a nice lady I want her to be my new best.friend.
Keira Knightley's husband- really lovely. Looks and smells delicious.
Peter Andre is also lovely.

Eileen101 · 24/10/2022 06:27

So disappointed to hear about Justin Fletcher being so rude! My 2 year old loves something special.

Relieved to hear that the general consensus on David Attenborough doesn't fit the poster earlier on.

Dustyblue · 24/10/2022 05:43

@lborgia I think you're onto something there. Maybe I only saw Bob's good side because I had a stash that indulged one of his greatest passions! Doesn't mean he hasn't been nasty to other people in his life.

But really, most people aren't entirely one way or the other are they? Sometimes I am very nice to strangers and other times I AM NOT. Being famous would put the pressure on big time.

PukDetektiv · 24/10/2022 05:30

In Peter Jones across elevators, this random shoots me a rather nasty look & turns her head away ever so prissily! I honestly wouldn't have noticed her without the attitude, it was Felicity Kendal; she must have mistaken me for someone she loathes, or for a fan Confused
Her face is full of fillers, na.

I have been around Kate Winslet a few times in completely mundane circumstances; she blends in very successfully, she IS a great actress after all.

lborgia · 24/10/2022 05:03

@Dustyblue - you see, I can understand that. If you generally can’t stand that celebrity came with your work, then being able to relax with one of your passions might be a lot easier. Not an excuse, obviously, for being unpleasant to anyone, but maybe you got the good side because he wasn’t having to “deal” with you?

Kate Adie was once put through to me by mistake, and expected me to know who “Kate” was, and put her through to the correct publisher immediately. She was completely livid and did not believe that I didn’t know who her publisher was. Maybe if I wasn’t waiting for a call from one of my own authors, I would’ve been more forgiving.

Again, she may have been breathing fire because of something that happened with her book and she had been prepared to yell at someone else, but really, there is no excuse for being unpleasant to a complete stranger. I did make the assumption that she assumed I was “just” an assistant of some kind. Maybe she was like that with everyone.

I once took a phone call at work from Bob Geldof. He's the rudest man I've ever come across.

See, I've heard similar things about Bob Geldof (that he's a prick, basically). But years ago he was here in Australia on a speaking tour and spent several hours, over a couple of days, in my 2nd-hand bookshop.

He wasn't what you'd call chatty but asked me lots of polite questions about the shop and my life in general. He collects Graham Greene 1st editions and various others, so I let him go through my collectible stuff that wasn't on display. He had a ball and spent more than the shop usually made in a week. I was so happy I let him take a poster off the wall that he liked!

Maybe it was just the books that made him happy? 😂

Sam Heughan from Outlander is lovely. Very friendly and laid-back.

I've not seen this, is it as good as the hype?

Mrangrylivesnextdoor · 24/10/2022 02:21

Was in a small cafe sitting next to Bob Geldof, he was very polite to the staff , then when going up to pay they said oh don’t worry it’s on us and he said no come on you’ve got bills to pay or something along those lines and paid it, nothing bad to say really.

AnnaBethLurkingMostly · 24/10/2022 02:12

Sarah Cawood was far from friendly 20 years ago but not sure she is a celeb, I served her at Gatwick and found her rude but it was her manner rather than anything she said - I was a teenager so maybe called it wrong. I wasn’t grumpy promise 👍
According to quite a few people I know who’ve worked for them the Cambridges are meant to be vile! I’ve got over my shock, confirmed by many eg security staff. Hope that isn’t treason!

Middledazedted · 24/10/2022 01:13

Ricky Tomlinson - just to counter the one a few pages back - was known to have kept contact with an injured striker from way back when. Used to visit and was lovely. My friend didn’t know it was him for a long while. He just came as a friend and made no fuss. This was long after he was very famous.

Kikibirdy · 24/10/2022 01:06

Jools Holland - grumpy, arrogant and appears to hate anyone who isn’t famous

opposite exp of JH - worked with him on Later and absolutely lovely

I see someone has already drawn attention to this but please don't name the Duchess of Sussex on this type of thread because, as most of us realise, negative comments about her are always inspired by a fundamental racism.

Oh behave 🙄

Well that's my fountain well and truly peed on.
What a shame

He used to go out with the niece of a good friend of mine and she met him quite a few times and said he was lovely.

Berrylina · 24/10/2022 00:59

Everyone I have met has been nice. It's the hangers on who are horrible.

audeloquipalam · 24/10/2022 00:57

Ricky Tomlinson. Quite the opposite of the image he portrays. Spends his time kissing the arses of the power brokers in the room and blanks anyone else present. A very unpleasant and ignorant man.

Lowering the tone a bit, worst person I’ve met is Mr Tumble. Totally ignored my daughter who has Down Syndrome who ran up to him, he was filming in a Special Needs School.

I've unfortunately not heard one nice thing about Justin Fletcher outside of his tv persona.

Rowan Atkinson... I met him at the stage door after seeing him play Fagin in Oliver. He was very unfriendly. I've heard similar stories from other people. There was an arrogance about him.

On the flip side, Graham Norton is one of the nicest I've met. He was very friendly and unassuming.

Noooo not Rowan Atkinson!!! 😩 I love him

Gamezup · 24/10/2022 00:42

Met David Attenborough once and he seemed a very polite gentleman. Leslie Phillips was charming (although he did ask for my phone number! This was when he was about 80 !!) Penelope Keith was lovely, a very friendly lady. Jenson Button was absolutely fabulous....very pleasant, unpretentious and a quietly spoken, down to earth type of guy who is much more handsome in real life than on TV.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 24/10/2022 00:42

I have friends who run a very niche business and have a few celebrity clients. They did work for Brian May and his wife recently. Brian was apparently a miserable twat but his wife was wonderful and friendly. I was gutted - I met him once in London, watching We Will Rock You and he was really pleasant to ne

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 24/10/2022 00:41

A Hairy Biker (can’t remember which one) screamed at me once. I called him about an event he was taking part in and I caught him at a bad time apparently - he was in panto rehearsals IIRC.

FlirtyMelons · 24/10/2022 00:40

A relative of mine worked for Keira Knightly, she was with her every day and said she was lovely but her husband was awful.

I have met lots of celebs and most have been lovely. I think I met Will Young on an off day. He was in a work capacity but he was not interested in meeting people. Robbie Williams was extremely arrogant, Mark Owen absolutely adorable. All the strictly lot are lovely, i have met quite a few of them several times, Aljaz and Janette really stand out as being really nice but to be honest they all seem wonderful. Rob Lowe was gorgeous and so sweet to everyone, as was David Ginola and Sean Bean.
