To be considering going to A&E?

Woke up at 4am this morning with pain high in the middle of my stomach. Thought maybe trapped wind, took buscopan and windeeze , went to loo twice and no better.
I've not eaten all day cos of this pain. It's like an intense stitch or wind type pain?
I don't know if I should go to a&e or if I should just wait. It's probably a 6 on the pain scale, I can walk around kind of but it's always there. It's about here (see photo)
I don't know what to do.

To be considering going to A&E?

@Loachworks It's strange isn't it. I actually like labour pain in a strange way I've had 2 with just gas and air at the end (I'm really not showing off I've never had a back to back labour I've heard they're horrendous)
I think the not knowing makes it worse for me as I focus on it? Constantly thinking what could be wrong with me and hyper focusing on if it's worse or not. Where as in labour I don't worry what's causing the pain as I have a pretty good idea! 😂

excellent that you have an appointment hope they get to the bottom of this, ad cure it!

Fingeronthebutton · 07/09/2022 17:59

Loachworks
same here. I suffer from diverticulitis. My ten is falling off the toilet and being sick as well as the other end.
The last thing I would be doing is posting on MN.

OldFan · 07/09/2022 17:55

Feel better soon. x

OldFan · 07/09/2022 17:54

As it would take two weeks to get an appointment to see a GP, you may as well go to A&E.

You can usually get a same day urgent appointment if you call first thing or first thing after lunch.

Glad you've have a chat to them @leopardprintlover88 . If 111 said a certain course of action then go. You're not making a wrong course of action by doing so.

DWMoosmum · 07/09/2022 17:52

I had this a couple of months ago. I suffer with reflux but it had got really bad and was giving me chest pains and difficulty swallowing. Doc gave me lanzoprazole to start with, which did nothing, so now I'm taking esomeprazole and it's worked a treat, no more pain. However when it was bad I was questioning on whether I was having a mild heart attack.

With anything like this, don't take to mums net, call 111 or go to A&E, however, don't drive yourself as If it is a heart attack and you go into a spasm, you could cause an accident.

Hope you got it sorted.

Winnietheboo · 07/09/2022 17:52

The pain scale is more to see how a patient is fluctuating anyway, ie if someone comes in as a 4 and then goes to a 7 later on its clear their pain is getting worse. It's not an accurate scale that directly relates over different people, you can usually tell more by how someone is acting ie if someone says they're a 10 but they're happily walking around and using the affected body part it's unlikely its an actual 10.

Loachworks · 07/09/2022 17:50

My 10 and your 10 are probably very different. I discussed this with a pain specialist yesterday. She said she always asked lots of questions to try to ascertain a true scale.

My 10 is a perforated bowel or when the epidural (used as pain relief post major surgery) stops working.

My labours are precipitous so very fast, very painful and no drugs. The back to back one I'd put at a nine.

A six would for me would merit a trip to a pharmacist or an email to my GP but your six might be my ten...

Onlytheriver · 07/09/2022 17:39

How long have you had the pain?

Lougle · 07/09/2022 17:36

Soontobe60 · 07/09/2022 17:29

Why? She’s not had an accident, and it’s not an emergency.

Quite right with the first statement. You can't possibly know with the second. Pain is really subjective. People can genuinely think they are dying from quite a minor condition. Other people might say they are in 'discomfort' with a major condition. That's why physical examination is so important because the physical signs are combined with the symptoms the patient experiences to arrive at a differential diagnosis that can be explored. Assumptions lead to misdiagnosis.

Onlytheriver · 07/09/2022 17:36

Pancreatitis and you need urgent medical attention.

BlodynGwyn · 07/09/2022 17:33

Before I had my gall bladder removed, I found that jumping about unclogged the bile duct and gave me relief. Sitting still made the pain much worse. I also avoided all fats in my diet, and so with all the jumping jacks and almost zero fat diet I lost weight and became rather fit. This worked for me for a year or so, but I don't advise it.

lurchermummy · 07/09/2022 17:32

Sounds like trapped wind, which is very painful I grant you

Daysy · 07/09/2022 16:13

Yeah YABU.

Why don’t grown adults know what A&E stands for? It’s weird.

It is actually ED, not A&E. It changed a long time ago.

I agree - 111 if unable to get in contact with the GP for a review.

OP be mindful of continuous loose stools and if you begin to vomit, you will become dehydrated quickly.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 07/09/2022 17:32

What was your back pain? Gall stones very often presents as pain in/around the shoulder blade. I'd mention the ongoing backpain when you see urgent care - it may not be your back at all iyswim!

Hmmmwhatnametochoose · 07/09/2022 17:31

"I actually took 2 ibroprofen last night before bed for an unrelated issue do you think that could've triggered it?"

Ibuprofen gives me horrendous upper abdo pain (I don't take it any more).

BuildersTeaMaker · 07/09/2022 17:31

Drink lots of water, stay off caffeine and alcohol.
Go to the pharmacist now ( find the one that’s open out of hours in your area) and ask for private consul - they’ll take you to their private room ( if they don’t ask them to) and talk to them. They have 5 years training to do their job, and they have more knowledge on medication than a gp.
take their advice, which might yet be see gp, or even go to A and E.

much better advice than MN ( except those that are in health services 😉).

I don't recall eating much fat. I've felt a bit nauseous for a few days so I haven't eaten much. The last thing I ate was some lasagne about 5pm last night x

It does sound a bit like your gallbladder rumbling, and lasagne would be classic for causing a problem. You say you didn’t eat much fat but you ate a lasagne… was it a low-fat, low-calorie lasagne? Otherwise, a lasagne is a ton of cheese, meat, and often acidic tomato sauce. Many of them have stats with as much fat as eating chips, or something from McDonald’s. Your gallbladder won’t care whether it’s saturated or unsaturated fat. I see someone else has mentioned the 4Fs of gallbladders going bad - “40s, female, fair, and fat.” But you don’t have to have them all, and you personally don’t. It seems with most of my friends, post-30, female, fair, and over size 6, is enough, which I definitely wouldn’t call “fat.” You’re going to probably want to watch things like the lasagne for your stomach for the next few months and your IBS (which could be gallbladder rumbles now, too, especially if you feel nauseous).

With that said, I do agree your symptoms are pretty vague. It could be your gallbladder, or your appendix, or a problem in your intestines. If you start vomiting, if you develop a fever, if you’re crying from pain, seek help. Then they’ll be able to tell you for sure what’s going on, I hope, and especially rule out appendicitis. If no other symptoms develop except this pain, do NOT take ibuprofen - it’s the hardest on your stomach of the NSAIDs; I’m not even allowed to take it. Take some paracetamol, and make sure nothing you eat for the next 24 hours has more than 5 grams of fat in the entire meal (look at the labels). So when you combine crackers and a cup of tea and something, it should still only have 5g of fat. If it’s your gallbladder, this will give it time to recover.

Do you think I'm doing right even though I spoke to a GP this morning? I'm quite impressed by both my GP and 111 really. X

Sorry I should've mentioned. I spoke to my GP this morning and she suggested it could be an ulcer?

An ulcer..in that place? 🤔🤨

Wheresthebeach · 07/09/2022 17:23

Glad you're being seen tonight. Quite impressed by your GP.

henni85 · 07/09/2022 17:19

Don’t take ibuprofen, it will make an ulcer worse. It could definitely have triggered this episode. Taking the lanzaprozole will take a little while to heal an ulcer. Give it a day or so.
I had an ulcer that presented as chest pains, so my GP sent me to A&E. They did an ecg and a couple of other tests, then prescribed a high dose of omeprazole for a few weeks. I remember it took a couple of days for the pain to ease

Reallyreallyborednow · 07/09/2022 17:18

Sounds like acid reflux

have you had an antacid? Won’t do any harm and will fix it very rapidly if it is.

lansoprasole also reduces acid, but by reducing it’s secretion, so takes a while to work. An antacid will neutralise immediately.

Winnietheboo · 07/09/2022 17:16

I'd phone 111 because it's come on suddenly, it's so bad you cannot eat and painkillers aren't touching it. I have had similar before and it was absolutely agony, sounds like you've tried the at home type stuff, they might be able to do a call back at least. Just because the GP dismissed it as maybe an ulcer I wouldn't take that as read.
