In thinking that Red Dwarf is still creasingly funny?

For some reason, I started re-watching Red Dwarf last night (it's available on Now). It's still SO funny.

There was a scene between Lister and Rimmer in 'Marooned' as they were discussing losing their virginity which honestly approaches comic genius. Every time I thought the punchline was there, another one followed.

For context, Lister had said he lost his virginity 'in the ninth hole of the Bootle municipal golf course'

Lister (wistfully): She just took all her clothes off and stood in front of me, completely naked. I was so excited, I almost dropped me skateboard.
Rimmer: SKATEBOARD? How old were you?
Lister: Twelve
Rimmer: TWELVE? You lost your virginity when you were twelve?
Lister: Yeah
Rimmer: Twelve?
Lister: Yeah
Rimmer (aghast): Twelve? You were twelve?
Lister: Yeah
Silence...
Rimmer: You can't have been a full member of the golf course then.

And later
Lister: Are you saying I've got a big bum?
Rimmer: Big? It's like two badly parked Volkswagons 😁

Anyone else a fan?

Meltdown is probably my favourite episode

Lister: Hang on, hang on, something's happening. Some kind of parade, or drill, but...
The Cat: But what?
Lister: Hang on. These guys aren't Nazis. They're all wearing different period costumes. There's one looking like Al Capone, there's another like Mussolini, Richard III, Napoleon... Smeg, it's like all the worst people in history have been brought together in one place. My God, there's James Last. I recognize him from Rimmer's record collection.
The Cat: What are they doing?
Lister: They're all just lining up in some kind of firing squad. Whoah, whoah, hang on, someone's being brought out. They're tying him to a stake. It's Winnie the Pooh.
The Cat: What?
Lister: Winnie the Pooh, I swear. He's refusing the blindfold.
The Cat: They're tying Winnie the Pooh to the stake?
[gunfire from outside]
Lister: That's something no-one should ever have to see.

Also we eat triple fried egg butties with chilli sauce and chutney on Boxing Day to celebrate

(And at other times during the year)

I don't love the first 2 seasons, seasons 3-6 are genius and then it went downhill. I haven't even watched the recent seasons on Dave.
My favourite episodes are Back to Reality and Rimmerworld.

ChateauxNeufDePoop · 02/07/2022 17:00

Also, I worked with someone who had a few business related qualifications in a niche field so listed them in her email signature, but also listed her BSc despite the fact she'd never been swimming...

ChateauxNeufDePoop · 02/07/2022 16:57

I really enjoyed 4-6 which is when a mate got me into it. I went back and watched 1-3 which were good but perhaps not as silly as 4-6. Didn't rate it beyond 7.

Love the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse episode as well as Holoship - "Lister to Red Dwarf, we have in our midst a complete smegpot"

And can't remember the episode but when (female) Holly is trying to evacuate the ship but the alarm siren breaks, "Oh no, now my sirens gone. Awooga, Awooga, abandon ship". My dad had never seen an episode but happened to walk into the room when that was on and creased up laughing.

It's the despair squid, not suicide squid!
Cor blimey no wonder you lot only scored 4% 😬
What a load of twonks lol

LaurieFairyCake · 02/07/2022 16:52

It's called 'back to reality' but its Suicide squid in my head

And Timothy Spall is BRILLIANT

LaurieFairyCake · 02/07/2022 16:51

Suicide Squid is the absolute best episode ever - I brook no argument about that one Grin

It's UTTER GENIUS

"I'm on the run from the Fascist police with a murderer, a mass murderer and a man in a Bri-nylon shirt"

TheSoapyFrog · 02/07/2022 16:39

Red Dwarf is still hilarious. Except for the later series (pretty much when Rob Grant stopped writing them), which are really bad.

Watto1 · 02/07/2022 16:38

I stand corrected! Or is it the Bolivian navy on manoeuvres in the South Pacific?

GoodJanetBadJanet · 02/07/2022 16:32

@Watto1
It’s a small, off-duty, Czechoslovakian policeman!

Noooo the Rimmer part of my personality has to point out that it's a small off duty Czechoslovakian traffic warden, not policeman!
Or ir's a red and blue striped golfing umbrella. 😁

We didn't have a video recorder as a child so we taped the episodes onto cassettes and listened to them like radio dramas!

"Please rush me your portable walrus polishing kit. Four super brushes that will clean even the trickiest of sea bound mammals. Yes I am over 18 - although my IQ isn't."

(From memory so number of brushes may be wrong!)

ImustLearn2Cook · 02/07/2022 14:34

One of my all time favourite shows and books.

I remember the very first time I watched it, the very first episode and everyone dies except Lister. I totally didn’t expect that. Very original. Never had I seen a tv show before where they kill off most of the characters in the first episode. And ironically Holly makes Rimmer (the one person Lister couldn’t tolerate) into a hologram to be a companion to him. And the cat that Lister smuggled onboard that was responsible for all the deaths, somehow has kittens and they eventually evolved to one human cat man. Absolutely mad and wonderful.

The books are even more madly, genius, funny.

Yourinmyspot · 02/07/2022 14:31

It’s so funny, I think my favourite episode is the one with the polymorph in it when it takes an emotion out if each of them, just so funny. I remember the first time I saw that episode I gave my self an asthma attack I was laughing so hard.

Squeekyturtle · 02/07/2022 14:28

An absolute favourite in our house. Dwayne Dibbly and Mr Flibble top favourites but so many funny quotes throughout!

Kryton taking a poleroid of his human bits "eh what were you looking at at the time" as Dave looks at them.

The page found on Mt Sinai thought to be the original bibles opening paragraph "To my darling Candy. All characters portrayed within this book are fictitious and any resemblance to persons living or dead is purely coincidental."

MyBeloved · 02/07/2022 14:25

Also...

"Your guitar was made from camphor wood...?"

Too many amazing episodes to mention really.

MyBeloved · 02/07/2022 14:22

Backwards is an absolute masterpiece of an episode.

The Reverse Brothers!
The scene in the café!
The fight scene!

The Winnie the Pooh scene almost killed me the first time I watched it and its still one of my favourite scenes in any show to date.

Until that point, I liked Red Dwarf (DH is a huge fan) and found it funny. But that scene tipped it for me. Craig Charles was superb in it.

'He's refusing the blindfold'. Chortling as I write this.

One of my favourites too. That whole episode is brilliant. Rimmer walking up and down the line of soldiers when he's completely lost the plot - Barrie plays it so, so well.

I've just remembered Rimmerworld when the ghosts of parts of Rimmer's personality rise from their graves when the crew are trying to get the Bug out the swamp - it's brilliant.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 02/07/2022 14:19

Been to sci fi conventions a number of times too. Met Chris Barrie and Craig Charles and Robert Llewelyn and Danny John Jules. (Not all at the same time.) I have got a great photo of me and DH and the DC with Chris Barrie. (But no, I'm not posting it here.)

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 02/07/2022 14:16

@Needhelp101

I would go as far as to say it's one of the top 3 sitcoms ever. It's 100% absolutely brilliant. Can't fault it. So well written, so funny, great characters, well cast, just amazing. Me and DH and the DC have seen every episode some 10 to 12 times and know many of the scripts off by heart. Not a month goes by when we don't spout a line or phrase from Red Dwarf. It's hilarious! 😁

LOVE IT. 😍

The shrinking boxers scene was the best ever imo
