Kitchen Inventory?!

Shamelessly posting here for traffic having just bought 4 tins of baked beans at the supermarket and coming home to find 6 already in my cupboard.

AIBU to ask how you keep track of what's in your kitchen!? Is there a good app!? If it's cheaper than the cost of 4 tins of baked beans it'll be worth it!

Get Alexa to add things to my shopping list then
use it as I go around the shop. Although I would say open and screenshot the list before you go as sometimes you can’t get a signal.

I have a pen and pad in my kitchen. When something runs out or is near to running out I write it on the pad, thus gradually creating a shopping list.

Then before I go shopping I have a look in the cupboards and fridge/freezer and add anything I'll need to buy.

I never go shopping without a shopping list. That way I only buy what I want or need and don't end up with a load of stuff cluttering up the cupboards.

Doesn't need an app, just some paper and a pen.

WinnieTheWinsomeWitch · 19/06/2022 14:52

Keep a shopping list pad handy. When one of us opens the last pack of something or takes the last one (or nearly the last if it’s something we use frequently), we add it to the list. This includes toiletries and cleaning stuff - anything we get from the supermarket.

We have a weekly delivery, so when I do the order, I plan the week’s meals and add what I need for those to the list, checking the cupboards and fridge for things still left first, then make the order. I also check offers of the week and will buy these in greater quantities if there’s something we use regularly, so we save money that way.

You can do the last two things even if you shop instore - just make sure you still get all the things on your list as well as the week’s bargains. Always meal plan, even if loosely, to avoid waste and unnecessary extra trips to the shops.

Crunchymum · 19/06/2022 14:47

Next time you go to the shops take the 4 pack of beans and put them in the food bank collection point?

RedSnail · 19/06/2022 14:44

When I make the meal plan I open the fridge, freezer and cupboard and plan meals that use up anything that is left first. Then I plan meals for the rest of the week and add only what’s needed to the shopping list. Do you just go shopping and buy things at random? I’d remember if I’d bought four tins of beans the week before but not eaten the meals they were planned in anyway.

ZoeQ90 · 19/06/2022 14:41

I have a 'not to buy" section on my shopping list where I put things I commonly buy either out of habit or when on offer but that we don't need that week.

Burgoo · 19/06/2022 14:41

Am I missing something? Why is this so difficult? Just look!

Apps for shopping lists? The world has lost its GD mind!

ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 19/06/2022 14:39

I meal plan and write a shopping list.
I sit at the kitchen table to do it, and keep getting up to see what we've got in the cupboards, then I write only what we need for the meals I'm planning.

DogInATent · 19/06/2022 14:37

I have a pretty good idea what's been eaten in the previous week, and when I'm shopping I'm mentally replenishing and buying ahead for my mental plans for the week to come.

Things like baked beans we don't have very often, so I might get caught out buying extras if I was thinking ahead to a camping trip and hadn't checked the cupboard before I went shopping. But beans last forever and can always go in the doomsday cupboard.

Ohthatsexciting · 19/06/2022 14:10

Op do you just go grocery shopping and have no idea what you need? No meal planning on any level?

MsSquiz · 19/06/2022 14:10

I don't have a specific app to keep track, but I use the "notes" app with one titled "shopping list" and just add things on through the week that we run out of. Or if one of us is popping to the shop for something, we have a quick look in the fridge/cupboard to see if there's anything we need that can't wait for the weekly shop.

Pretty sure most people just open the fridge/cupboard and make a shopping list...

TroysMammy · 19/06/2022 14:07

I'm not clever enough but I wish someone would invent this:-

You have your favourite recipes on an app.

You add the ingredients and the weights on the jar, tin, packet you have in your cupboard.
Every time you use your recipe it deducts the quantity of your cupboard ingredients.
When the jar, tin, etc is nearly finished it adds it to your shopping list for your next shop/order.

TamSamLam · 19/06/2022 14:05

If your cupboards/fridge are vaguely tidy, take a picture before you go to the shop, check as you're walking round.

EmilyBolton · 19/06/2022 14:03

Use the ass😱🤣🤣use the list that should be

purplepaintedpineapple · 19/06/2022 14:03

We have a little whiteboard and write on it if anything runs out and then I take a photo of it before shopping

EmilyBolton · 19/06/2022 14:03

Quickest way I find to have a shopping list pad (e.g scrap paper and peg) near the store cupboards. When you use the last of time , or see you are getting low on an item you use frequently, write it down on list there and then (have a pen/pencil hanging next to it ) . When you do your shopping, use this as start of list and then add special ingredients for that weeks meals .
works fine.
I never shop without having done a menu and checked cupboards for special ingredients I need for that week.

but everything else I just use the ass to list when quantities I have drops below a certain level (e.g 2 bins of tomatoes, 1 tin sweat corn, 8 dishwasher tabs etc…)
I worked in supply chain…we have all sorts of high fancy names for purchasing methods…this one is called “reorder point”. But some people would swear by “periodic order” which means you check everything at time before you do your weekly shop. Or you can go “Kanban” which means have 2 on the go of everything, when you use one leave it out as a “signal” to order more. works a treat with the milk rota at work.
I love how man came along and invented fancy complicated terms in work for stuff women have done intuitively for centuries 🤣🤣🤣

LunaLoveFood · 19/06/2022 13:59

We use alexa for shopping lists. We add things as they are used up and she sends the list to the app.

Itloggedmeoutagain · 19/06/2022 13:57

A set of eyes and a pen or the notes on my phone

DifficultBloodyWoman · 19/06/2022 13:54

I have a list of everything I buy on a regular basis including food, toiletries, cleaning materials etc.

I check the list at the beginning of every month and try to do one big shop for pantry items, toiletries, cleaning stuff etc. My goal is to buy everything I need to avoid ‘top up shops’ and to ensure I don’t run out in the month ahead with the exception of fresh fruit, veg and meat which I shop for twice a week.

I walk through the house and check what is in the cupboards and fridge before going to the supermarket and I cross things off my list if I don’t need to buy them.

Also, my list was originally written in excel so when I am feeling particularly organized I have gone through receipts and added prices to the spreadsheet. This has turned it into a handy price book. I can tell you which of my three local supermarkets has the best deals on a product, what the average price I have paid for something is and how much prices have really gone up in the last few years.

I highly recommend this system.

ILikeHotWaterBottles · 19/06/2022 13:32

I use click and collect. Can go round my house and add things that I need. Don't have to bother going in either, much easier to budget too and it's quicker. All round winner, not had many issues with products either. Sometimes meat will be due earlier than normal but that just goes to the front of the meal planner, hardly a big deal.

TeenPlusCat · 19/06/2022 13:24

I look in cupboards, fridge & freezer, 'see' what's not there, write it on a list.
Plan meals and write them on list.

doradoo · 19/06/2022 13:23

We use the cozi app - it's a family organiser type thing where calendars and lists can all be used by each member of the family.

Stressofherregard · 19/06/2022 13:21

I have recently audited all my food and store cupboard items. I put them in a spreadsheet so that I can easily check what I have. It was mostly to avoid having multiple jars of herbs and spices but it was easier to just include everything. Next job is to add BB dates so I don't waste anything. BTW I only have a tiny kitchen

hulahooper2 · 19/06/2022 13:21

I keep a master shopping list on notes on my phone , copy it before shopping and delete stuff I don’t need , then delete it from the note as I add it to my trolley

coffeecupsandfairylights · 19/06/2022 13:20

Just do a shopping list?
