To be dreading face to face parents evening Thursday

IHateParentsEvenings · 10/05/2022 19:10

Going to get flamed to a crisp, never mind.

I am dreading it … teaching all day and then three solid hours between 4 and 7 talking to parents, some will be lovely but there will be some really difficult ones, won’t be able to be cut off after five minutes, will enjoy making me justify every detention since September.

Then home exhausted and still got the next days planning to do …

sorry MN, I dread it.

I bet the staff are too intimidated to join a union as well.

waterrat · 10/05/2022 22:30

One of my children struggles a lot and the parents meetings are just a joke. I can't possibly ask the sort of question I want to. I can't possibly get an understanding of how my child is doing.

I think teachers are over worked and underpaid so I'm very much on their side with a lot of issues. But working a 3 hour shift for parents evening twice a term is nothing....why not split it up over a few weeks and let parents have more time to talk.

JudgeJ · 10/05/2022 22:29

It’s up to teachers to be flexible and meet parents’ needs and demands.

It's also up to the parents to meet the needs of their child, to ensure they are working and behaving themselves then there would be less acrimony, at the end of the day parents are the most important people in a child's life, yet they continue to foist things they don't like onto others.

Can parents book home visits with their child’s class teacher at the weekends as well-I’m sure many would find that more helpful?

Perhaps the teachers could offer some additional 1:1 tuition whilst they were there, too?

Can you tell us which county this free school is in?

SleepingThroughNight · 10/05/2022 22:29

@Tolson ”learning journey facilitators”???! Oh please do us a favour and pee off!

This is one of the funniest things I've read on here in a long time. 😂

waterrat · 10/05/2022 22:28

This thread upsets me so much. As a parent wr know so little about how our kids are doing in school. From 4 to 18 they go in.. they take shit and do the work and struggle socially...and as parents we know so little about their day and what they go through - socially as wrll as academically

And teachers begrudge 5 minutes??? Are you for real ?? And you dislike parents of the children you teach actually learning about how their child is doing.

Why not have a proper conversation maybe parents would be less stressed

Testingprof · 10/05/2022 22:28

@Tolson is your DH’s school Toby Young’s free school?

PickySlackTastic · 10/05/2022 22:27

There is a competitive starting salary of around £19,500 which can then be topped up based on factors such as exam results, home visits and general contribution to school life through things like extra curricular clubs and marketing.

Grinyou nearly had me there for a moment but yes, agree with PP that you overstepped the mark here.

Uh huh 🤔

TheGrumpiest · 10/05/2022 22:27

Do other countries have parents evenings? I honestly don't really see the point of them? What do they really achieve? Do they make a difference to anything?

Aren't engaged parents in touch with teachers about concerns throughout the year? If your child is doing well can't that be summarised in a report?

SleepingThroughNight · 10/05/2022 22:27

@Tolson The only way a starting salary of £19500 would be considered “competitive” is if all the teachers are unqualified. A starting salary in England for a teacher (excluding London and fringes) is £25K+

I think I've read some of Tolson's nonsense before. Different name, same posting style-with the intention to cause major frothing.

jaysusmickeyandjoseph · 10/05/2022 22:22

@Tolson 'Competitive' starting salary of £19,500?? Now I know you're winding us up. National pay scale or not, Teachers start on more than £30k these days. None of them would work for that little money

Not outside of London they don’t but it’s not as low as 19,500. It’s £25k outside of London and fringe

Italiandreams · 10/05/2022 22:25

Ok @Tolson you got us! Unions not necessary is definitely a step too far.

@Tolson if parents booked a meeting with me at 6.45pm they'd see me sorting my own children's bathtime, by 7.30pm I'm sure they'd love to hear Smartest Giant in Town as a pre bedtime story. If their 'booked appointment' was 7.50pm, they'd almost certainly see me with a Malbec in hand.
You have genuinely got to be winding us all up. But as you're seemingly so proud of your husband's 'innovative' school, please do share the name of it with us, it would be great to know whete to avoid!

A competitive starting salary of £19000? Competing with what exactly? Certainly not the teachers on the main national scale. I love that it’s not his job to be available to parents. What a lot of nonsense.

ICannotRememberAThing · 10/05/2022 22:24

You’re funny! 🤣🤣🤣

caecilius1 · 10/05/2022 22:24

Grin
Oh I see, it's that type of school. None of the 'teachers' have teaching qualifications.

🤣😂 nice try. It’s the head that I want to speak to at a random time not a class teacher. Normally it’s to complain about a class teacher or running of a school.

I’ve done that nonsense of calling a parent at 7pm. Sorry but I’m also a parent and I want to be able to parent my own child. One of the many many reasons why I no longer teach.

5 minutes is enough unless there are concerns but I’m firmly of the belief nothing at parents evening should be a surprise, so concerns should be raised prior to parents evening unless they have just cropped that week/day.
