To be sad at going grey already

I’m so depressed about going grey at 33! I’ve found loads of grey hairs, I’m only early 30s surely this is too early? I already feel really old and past it anyway so this has just made me feel worse, I’m not ready to embrace them and don’t now want to spend the rest of my life dying my hair at 33. Doesn’t help that I’m allergic to hair dye so now what am I suppose to do. Aibu to think 33 is too early for this?! 😳

Why is grey hair more ageing on women than men?

It isn’t. It ages some women, it doesn’t age others. My bloke’s still blond, I’ve been grey for 25 years and people still think he’s older than me when he’s actually four years younger. The ageing thing is bollocks.

Marvellousmadness · 18/04/2022 15:06

Yabu
You can dye hair with henna
Or coffee or God knows what else
Also.

You are 33. Not 23
It's normal to go grey

stripeyflowers · 18/04/2022 15:04

Look on the bright side, OP - this is just the start. In twenty years time you'll look back to this and wish that's all you had to worry about in relation to your physical decline. Gin

WalkingOnTheCracks · 18/04/2022 14:47

With the kind of ironic symbolism you wouldn't get away with in a novel, I noticed my first grey hair on my eighteenth birthday.

For the next twenty-five years, my hair was dyed various colours (jet black with deep blue streaks was my favourite) but when I finally gave up on that faff, it turns out that my hair is snow-white, and I love it like that.

Stressybetty · 18/04/2022 14:46

I'm 49 now and still dying mine. Started going grey around 15 years ago, now it's around my forehead and temples and scattered throughout the hair. Hate it as it makes me look really old and doesn't suit my skin tone. I dye it around every 4 weeks. I tried esalon online, a bit expensive but may cater for allergies.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 18/04/2022 14:46

It's normal to have some grey at your age, but I don't think anyone feels happy when they see their hair turning grey. It reminds us that aging is an inevitable process, and we are not immune to it.

I'm mid 40s now and I've been colouring my hair one way or another for 10 years. It is an expensive pain in the arse. If your head swells up then at least you don't have a dilemma on your hands - you get it cut well and leave the colour au naturale.

ThreeLocusts · 18/04/2022 14:42

Hi OP, it's just genetics. I had my first white streak at age 18, in exactly the same place as my mum.

I've been mostly white since about age 40, like my parents before me. Probably not my favourite feature of my appearance, but what can you do? I try to make sure I get nice haircuts and don't think about it.

But if you really do mind, just teach yourself to dye it at home. I did that for a while, way cheaper than hairdresser's. Worked fine, but now I can't be arsed.

Solosunrise · 18/04/2022 14:38

I get why you're fed up though OP Flowers
If you can't find dye that you're not allergic to, can I suggest the Grombre page on Instagram?
Lots of beautiful women sharing their grey or going grey look.

Minfilia · 18/04/2022 14:36

I started going grey in my mid 20s.

I’m 36 now and the fuckers are everywhere!

I dye mine heavily and fortunately still have a youthful face Grin

Solosunrise · 18/04/2022 14:36

@stripeyflowers

Unfortunately, not everyone goes grey by choice - they are forced into it by allergies. Or the expense of the upkeep. I just got fed up of planning my life around the next dye job and having to use camouflage colour powder to touch up the greys in between dye sessions. It's always more difficult if your hair is very dark. Blondes generally have it easier.
Same!
Notbeinfunnehbut · 18/04/2022 14:35

Solidarity OP I’m 32 and I’ve gotta keep covering the grey now till god knows when Angry

HoppingPavlova · 18/04/2022 14:35

I would have been 50% grey at 30yo and well and truly completely grey by 40yo. I don’t think it’s that unusual.

I went through uni with a girl who would have been a third grey by that stage (20yo). She didn’t bother to cover it.

Minniem2020 · 18/04/2022 14:34

I started going grey in my late 20s, my hair is very dark so very noticeable. I now have to dye every 2-3 weeks to keep on top of them

AHungryCaterpillar · 18/04/2022 14:33

@WhereWasThatFrom

Are you sure you are allergic to all types of dye?
I don’t know I will need to explore this more as I stopped dying when I was younger as I would always have an allergic reaction.

It might not make me look 60 but it could easily make me look 40! Nothing wrong with being 40 but no woman wants to look older than they are

ArtVandalay · 18/04/2022 14:32

I’ve just spotted a white hair in my19 yr old’s head.

On my side of the family, we have a hideous early grey gene. But on my husband’s side they’re the opposite. My husband still has jet black hair at 55.

I agree, it’s rubbish to go grey young. There’s no way I’m ditching the dye. I know 2 people that have and they both look washed out and really old before their time. You’re very lucky and unusual if grey hair looks good on you.

godmum56 · 18/04/2022 14:31

@MurmuratingStarling

Yeah I know I said HE looks 3-4 years younger even with grey/white hair, but that's because for a start, I had only ever seen him like that. Plus, grey hair is more ageing on women (unfortunately.)
thats a belief because people say it is!
SeekingSunshine1995 · 18/04/2022 14:31

I found my first greys at 16! Been slowly going grey ever since and I’m only 27!

godmum56 · 18/04/2022 14:30

I have got two unrelated friends who started going grey in their early teens. One was sent home from school after the summer holidays "until the bleached hair had grown out" this was in the 60's btw....she had to get a note from her doctor to say it was a natural colour change and not bleach.

ILikeToSleepALot · 18/04/2022 14:28

I found my first greys in my teens, at your age I was about 30% grey I would say. I wouldn't find it aging, people in their 30s still have young-ish faces, so nobody is going to think you're 60 or anything. Conversely, nobody is going to believe that a 60 year old with dyed hair is actually 35, or that it is their natural hair colour. Generally speaking human beings look their actual age regardless of what they do about it cosmetically or not (and despite the polite lies other people tell them), so I wouldn't worry. You are still young, still time to enjoy being young! And I'm sure you look young even with grey hair!

User48751490 · 18/04/2022 14:28

@Ansjovis

I'm in the same situation (mid 30s, lots of grey hairs, allergic to hair dye) and I know you've said that you don't want to do this but I have discounted all alternatives so I'm just going with it. What's hilarious to me is that my mum and gran still dye their hair (mid 50s and mid 70s respectively) and I've decided to let whatever happens happen. Just thought I'd add another post on to show you're not alone.
My own mum still dyes her hair in her 70s. Various shades of blonde. Personally could not be bothered with the faff.
User48751490 · 18/04/2022 14:26

Almost 40, been going grey since 18. I just embrace it as I have no desire to dye my hair.
