to hate Spring

crochetmonkey74 · 29/01/2022 23:20

Ok this is a really unpopular opinion but I have had it since I was a child.
I hate the first signs of Spring that everyone loves. It makes me feel unsettled and sort of anxious about having all the extra hours.
I have no idea where it comes from or why I feel like it. I thought it was just a fear of change- but it doesn't happen with the onset of Autumn and Winter- I love those seasons.
I don't hate the Summer or find it uncomfortable- I enjoy all the normal Summer stuff- I'm not lonely and I don't struggle to fill my time, but the weeks when the birds start waking me up in the morning and the nights draw out, those spring days just give me this hollow pit of the stomach feeling. No one in my real life can relate- at work the mantra is 'Spring is coming Thank God' - anyone here know what I mean, does anyone else have this?

God I love spring, saying goodbye to the long winter is such a relief for me. It's not too hot but just seeing a bit of blue sky and birds singing in the trees makes me feel optimistic and fresh. My favourite season by far, closely followed by autumn then a tie for summer and winter. Each to their own 😊

springisaroundthecorner · 19/03/2022 14:23

You are not alone OP. First day back at school in September I feel renewed and happy. I love winter and detest the summer. Often too warm to sleep, trying to find shade constantly, the constant pressure to be out because it's sunny, always too hot in the car, kids seem to be supercharged and don't want to go to sleep etc

ForeverSingle881 · 19/03/2022 14:12

In my country of birth (Eastern Europe - so also we have all 4 seasons) we call this "spring tiredness" or "spring fever". Lots of people have it and there is a biological reason for it related to the body's inability to adapt quickly enough to the stark change in season. Your circadian rhythm is out of sync, melatonin production has to rise because of the light so you feel sleepier, you don't have enough vitamin D, bugs and viruses are plentiful so you're likely to catch sth, hay-fever being triggered again will make you tired, almost of these combined will cause this. Doctors recognize it as a real thing so you're not alone at all.

I think in the UK we're so desperate for sunshine, we don't want to say anything remotely negative about it getting warmer.

WasntAllThat · 19/03/2022 14:09

I find Spring a bit of a shock to the system after the dragging dark months of Jan & Feb.
Feel like I’m blinking in the sunlight and feeling a bit fragile and anxious, like a baby chick Grin.

It’s the season I’m most likely to be ill, too, although that’s got a bit better since I started taking high dose vitamin D a few years ago.

It’s definitely my least favourite season. Nothing beats the beauty and atmosphere of Autumn!

deplorabelle · 19/03/2022 14:03

I struggle with spring because I basically have seasonal affective disorder (the less common type where summer heat and brightness makes me feel dreadful) so the thought of all that starting again for another year makes me feel anxious.

I think if you're someone who loves heat and summer spring can be tough because it takes so long to warm up and it takes really a surprisingly long time for much to grow in the average garden.

I took up gardening many years ago to help with my dread of summer and it's been a huge success. I look at the sun shining and think how much my beloved plants will enjoy it and that makes everything better. I can almost look forward to summer because it's the growing season. On a bad day though I still want to deck people who say "Isn't it a lovely day?" Or who describe 30 degrees as "glorious weather" when almost everyone admits they are actually finding it unpleasantly hot.

Sunnytwobridges · 19/03/2022 13:58

@Liv999

I'm exactly the same, I think it's because I know summer is on the way which I detest even more than Spring, I really start to feel down this time of year, I absolutely love when we get around to Sept again and the evenings start drawing in, most people think I'm crazy
@Liv999 If you’re crazy so am I cause I feel the same way about spring and summer. I’m dreading summer already and as much as I hate to wish my life away I can’t wait til the fall. 😝
Sunnytwobridges · 19/03/2022 13:54

@YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer

Its weird but Spring always brings this weird melancholy feeling to me. I've never understood it or talked about it with anyone.
Finally someone that feels the same way about spring as I do lol

I can’t quite put my finger on why Spring brings up these feelings in me but I hate it.
I hate summer too as it’s unbearably hot where I live and I hate the heat. and so many people are doing summer family vacations and I haven’t had one of those
in decades so it stirs up weird feelings as well

lollipoprainbow · 19/03/2022 13:41

@ChurchlightJane ooh love September!! The sun makes me feel depressed, I'm a weirdo too !

ChurchlightJane · 19/03/2022 13:40

I know that feeling. I hate summer and all that comes with it. So from the end of February I have this awful tension building because I know spring is coming and more light and more warmth and it will lead to summer. It's too much for me. Too bright, warm and too much of other people. I keep my feelings to myself though.
I'm aware this makes me sound like a joyless weirdo but you should see me vibrate with happiness come September.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 19/03/2022 13:29

YABU! Spring is my favourite season. These past few days of sun have done wonders for my mood!

lollipoprainbow · 19/03/2022 13:26

@RoseHarper feel exactly the same, it's a beautiful day here and I feel like I should be out in it. My dd has ASD and likes being at home and she doesn't want to do anything today. I feel guilty for not making the most of the day. Find it much easier being at home when it's rainy!

RoseHarper · 19/03/2022 13:11

Been thinking about this more, today is s beautiful day here, so I think its a fear of missing out/guilt thing. I like being at home and pottering, so I feel like I should be outside, getting loads done when it's nice, so there is a sense of guilt/shame that I'm not outdoors and making the most of the weather. In the Winter, even when it's nice as it's cold you are only expected tobe out for a few hours...so weird how we set such stupid rules for ourselves...this thread has really made me think.

Grapewrath · 19/03/2022 08:37

I love spring. Always have- it always feels like new year to me.
I absolutely hate December and January though.

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/03/2022 08:25

I love spring - but Christmas carols send me into a pit of despair, no idea why.

Could it be being woken up early?

As a PP said I pretty much enjoy all the seasons these days, although late winter - early Jan to mid February is only rescued by Burns night and the thought of spring,

Octopus37 · 19/03/2022 08:16

I try and see the good in all seasons, think the start of Autumn (September) is my favourite cause of all the new beginnings. However, I do have mixed feelings about Spring. I love the longer days, the possibilities, the blossom etc. But, my Mum died in March (20 years ago today), and my MIL died in April (7 years ago this year) and a very good friend of mine died in April (8 years ago this year). Unfortunately it will always be a little sad. I also get the feeling of wanting to stomp on daffodils, I hate them. When my Mum was in hospital there were lots of daffodils on the drive there and its just a horrible reminder. All other Spring flowers are fine though, I love tulips

Solosunrise · 19/03/2022 08:10

I love Spring and Autumn. Next up is winter. Always delighted with a cool rainy summer. It's not a popular opinion but I hate being hot. And those everlasting days of summer are a but too long for me! Love being able to shut the curtains, and thus the world out, at 4pm in winter.
Like a previous poster, I felt a bit hot and shabby yesterday, in well worn winter clothes.
What I really love is a lovely sunny late October!
But Spring is fine, and pretty. I do feel that melancholy a bit though.

SartresSoul · 19/03/2022 07:58

I felt this way when winter started this year for the first time ever. When the clocks changed I actually started to feel mentally suffocated by the darkness, it was a crushing feeling and I have no idea where it came from. I just had this overwhelming sense of dread and not wanting it to be dark at all. Really pleased it’s spring now, loving the light, flowers and bees.

lollipoprainbow · 19/03/2022 07:58

No I find it depressing !! Autumn is by far my favourite season.

BulletTrain · 19/03/2022 07:56

there I was in my well worn winter clothes, feeling slightly shabby against all the 'freshness' and a bit too hot.

This was me yesterday! And I felt a sudden overwhelming pressure to get the garden sorted (sweep the artificial lawn, dump last year's grow-bags, sort out the storage unit). I bloody hate garden maintenance but needs must with a 3 year old.

whatisforteamum · 18/03/2022 23:21

Oh no I absolutely love it.
I struggle with SAD and as much as I resist come October I'm withdrawn and dragging myself through winter.
The sunshine and daffodils signal new beginning s.
I used to wish spring away to get to the summer now I love it more with the promise of smiling faces and sunny walks and lighter days.

bumblingbovine49 · 18/03/2022 22:38

I dislike autumn way more though. The drawing in of the nights fills me with a sense of impending doom

Me too

bumblingbovine49 · 18/03/2022 22:37

Nope. Sorry Spring is my absolute favourite time of year and always has been. All that promise of sunshine but not too hot. The flowers, the birdsong, the longer days ( I absolutely love these ). I don't like autumn too much but I loathe winter and have been happier and much less depressed for the last few weeks than I have been for months. March has been very nice weather so far around our way , lots of bright crisp cool sunny days with blue skies. Absolutely perfect. Then again that is not to say there is anything wrong with you op, I'm sure lots of people don't like Spring

Oneonetheracehorse · 18/03/2022 22:36

Another one here who isn't keen on spring. I love autumn and winter and feel sad it's all so far away at this time of year. Could happily hibernate between March - June.

It seems like such a boring time to me too. Weather is often bright but damply cold, not satisfyingly cold as it is in autumn/winter. Summer hols are far away (I like July/Aug as it means Sept is on the way!) and it all just feels very dull.

I also find if I watch any TV shows that are set in autumn/Christmas that I get a real sense of longing and wanting to hang onto it. And if I see any obviously 'Spring' episodes I get a bit down and don't want to watch as much. A very weird feeling but I feel like I have found my people here!

Rainbowx · 18/03/2022 22:28

Yes I used to love summer when young now 38 I prefer Autumn sunny but cooler and the trees look pretty orange leaved,I get low in vit D so take a supplement so helps me feel OK I'm a march baby so maybe I should like spring!

5128gap · 18/03/2022 22:11

I find it a bit stressful. It tends to arrive unpredictably and makes me feel unprepared. Today for example, it was very warm in the sun, and there I was in my well worn winter clothes, feeling slightly shabby against all the 'freshness' and a bit too hot. There always seems to be the pressure to 'enjoy the lovely spring weather' too and I feel a failure and that I'm missing out if I've nothing planned. I dislike autumn way more though. The drawing in of the nights fills me with a sense of impending doom.
