How long does javelin arse last?

TiffanyAchingsHatFullofSky · 29/01/2022 22:20

It happened to me last week for the first time in ages. It lasted about 5-6 seconds.

I was just wondering whether, when we describe javelin arse, are we all experiencing the same thing?

Does it only last a few seconds for others as well?

Some info here

www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/317254

I used to get it while pooing during a period but nothing since menopause.

Gazelda · 30/01/2022 17:13

It generally happens at night for me. Anything from 5 to 30 mins.
Clammy, sweating, shivering, hard aching, nausea, feeling faint.
We keep medicine downstairs but I daren't risk trying to go fetch anything.

It helps to bear down as if doing a poo, but I generally end up lying foetal on the bathroom floor covered by a large towel. I then need a good sleep to recover.
I'm very post menopausal. I had endo for decades. I don't know if there's a link, but the pain is similar.

Note to self - stash some ibuprofen and a blanket in the bathroom for next time.

@namechanged221

Ohhhhh.... javelin arse

Thank God there's a name for it.

I thought it was just me

ME TOO! This thread has cheered me up no end.
Schmoozer · 30/01/2022 17:01

It’s ouuuuuuuuuuuuch 😮

LuckyWithMyLot · 30/01/2022 16:57

A few seconds. Anything more would be unbearable. I can't move / talk and it's so awkward if anyone else is in the room.

namechanged221 · 30/01/2022 16:45

What is the pouch of Douglas?

Tavelo · 30/01/2022 15:17

Oh and each time I got it it was a few seconds but took a good minute for the pain to dissipate if that makes sense

Tavelo · 30/01/2022 15:14

I cut out gluten as ai had other issues as well and haven't had it since. I used to get it at least once every 2 weeks totally at random but haven't had it since last June when I cut it out. I think it can be related to your nerves causing odd cramps in that region for some. As gluten was playing havoc with all my nerves but now all good thankfully.

Benjispruce5 I started with the stabby pain then it progressed to the clammy thought I was going to pass out type. I’ve had javelin arse since, usually just before my period. The clammy, almost pass out pain is less frequent but still bloody awful. Your DH has my sympathies!

StormzyinaTCup · 30/01/2022 10:44

Recommended by another mumsnetter on another thread: the second you get the sensation insert two suppositories. Immediate relief.

Suppositories of what?!

I was just wondering the same!
Immediate relief maybe but the follow through from that course of action could wipe out your whole day!!

Barefootinthecarpark · 30/01/2022 10:44

Oh, sorry @TiffanyAchingsHatFullofSky, I use Germoloids, but I’m sure that any hemorrhoid suppository would work. I’m 46 and have experienced this god-awful pain just before ovulation, during the last year. It is utterly hideous and stops me in my tracks. I can’t remember the poster who recommended the suppository tip, but huge thanks to them if they are reading this.

I’ve had this once, not long after giving birth to my second child. I thought it was trapped wind! Made me keel over with pain (luckily I was at home)

bigyellowTpot · 30/01/2022 09:54

Does anyone else get the sensation that they are actually shitting during an episode of javelin arse? I've had it so bad a couple of times that I was convinced I was shitting myself but it was just the horrendous spasms of JA. I always feel I need to run to the toilet incase I do shit.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 30/01/2022 09:52

I think it’s the most excruciating pain ever, easily beats labour pains.
It literally takes your breath away.

Benjispruce5 · 30/01/2022 09:42

@ipswichwitch that’s a bad case, like my DH had. The javelin arse is more a quick succession of stabs, no sweats or clamminess etc. DH said he went to the loo thinking the pain meant he had to ho but the ‘trying’ made him pass out. We looked it up and it was something to do with pressure on a nerve.Vaso-vagel reaction?

ScreamingMeMe · 30/01/2022 09:40

I luckily(!) only seem to get it when lying in bed in the morning. I couldn't say how long it lasts - feels like forever, is probably a few minutes.

Starbonnet123 · 30/01/2022 09:26

I suffer from this too mainly at night , it can last anything from 20 mins to an hour . I've had it since my mid 30s and was absolutely terrified it was something serious. I've eventually found out that it's just one of those things .
The way I relieve it is to sit up in bed and put pressure on the perineum (?) that really seems to ease it that and deep breathing.

Grin True! I didn't realise it happened to other people until I read it here, some years ago. And javelin arse is the most perfect description.
ipswichwitch · 30/01/2022 09:19

I never had it until I started peri menopause. Oh my days, the pain! And the nausea and sweating. First time it happened I came staggering out the bathroom and DH took one look at me and thought I was having a heart attack! The only person I’ve mentioned it to IRL that didn’t look at me like i have 3 heads was my lovely gastro consultant who nodded sagely, and said “ah yes that’ll be the proctalgia fugax. Bloody terrible!” Clearly a fellow sufferer.

I've never timed it because It's too painful to think about anything other than my arse.

ChristmasCatNo2 · 30/01/2022 08:43

I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night with the pain. I always crawl to the bathroom for painkillers but have never managed to stand up to reach for the cupboard. So I lie there sweating and nauseous until it passes. Probably around 10-15 minutes. I've had this happen maybe 10 times in my whole life.

I also get the 5-6 second ones every month with my period. I never knew what was wrong with me until reading threads on MN. So glad the stigma around everything feminine is being lifted and we can share stuff that many people go through.
