Lovely day, neighbours playing music in garden

Live in a detached house, so it’s not as though we have anyone too close, and reasonable sized gardens, but we do have other houses around us, so don’t expect silence.

Neighbours over the back are in their garden as it’s a lovely day, fair enough so are we, but they have also got their music playing. Loudly.

Aibu to think it’s the height of rudeness to have music blaring in the garden knowing full well others around can hear it too? It’s Christian easy listening type of music.

Tempted to put a bit of Motörhead on the Sonos, but that would be a bit passive aggressive. So I’m just stewing in silence and posting here instead - it’s certainly not making me feel very Christian!!

@Mamanyt the trouble with that is generally they're drinking too. You can't reason with people who are drunk

NotQuiteHere · 30/05/2021 17:06

@Crazycakelady17

Oops DH is outside with his friend laying a new patio with music playing I don’t think it’s rude it’s just as annoying as our local church bells chiming every hour of the local school kids playing out we have two within 100 metres Put some headphones in or go inside
Why can't your husband put the headphones on I wonder?
BigHeadBertha · 30/05/2021 17:03

Of course it's f*ing rude.

But many people are f*ing rude in various ways that affect you so then there's the question of what to do about it.

I think the best way to be far more content in life is to change your attitude. You shouldn't have to but you are the one who pays if you don't.

So, if at all possible, enjoy intrusive and unrequested things that pushes into your space: music, smoke, loud fighting, honking horns, dogs barking, children playing and the neighbors stomping around in the unit upstairs from yours. If you're lucky, you'll get to enjoy some nice dog crap or religious people knocking on your door to offer you Jesus or maybe someone will even drive through your yard and leave ruts.

Ohmmmm!

WTF99 · 30/05/2021 16:58

@SunnyMustard

Why are British people (assuming here) such cowards. Suffer in silence and mope about it, how mature. Just have a chat and I'm sure they'll be happy to turn the volume down a bit.
You have no dea what it's like to.live next to people who have no consideration or regard for those living around them I live In a 'nice' residential area and currently have wind chimes from one direction and Wild Thing playing over the fence loud enough for me to sing along and too loud to.ignore. Have made polite requests many times to keep it down....they just don't care. It's bananarama now....
MadameQuaver · 30/05/2021 16:58

I don't mind other people playing music. It doesn't bother me at all.

However our next door neighbours play music very loudly outside all summer long but get annoyed on the rare occasion that we play any music (at a much lower volume than they play theirs!)

SchrodingersImmigrant · 30/05/2021 16:51

Karaoke seems to join in now.

And I felt bad for mowing grass quickly on Sunday😂

Samanabanana · 30/05/2021 16:50

Our neighbours are drilling through breeze blocks for fun today. I wish they were playing loud music instead Grin

looptheloopinahulahoop · 30/05/2021 16:46

What is it with people that they feel the need to impose their music taste on everyone else? Either play it indoors or with headphones on.

MaMelon · 30/05/2021 16:43

Why don’t you just use headphones to listen to your perfectly put together tunes (that won’t sound so perfect to your neighbours) vodka?

If everyone had their music on it would be hellish - people who inflict their music on everyone else are relying on everyone else bro g considerate.

JamieFrasersAuntie · 30/05/2021 16:42

My arsehole neighbours play loud music in the garden every single day. I hate them.

Even with the windows shut I can still hear it in my house. Selfish bastards.

InTheDrunkTank · 30/05/2021 16:42

This is one of those times where there's a large gap between what your legally entitled to do and what a nice, considerate person would do.It's fairly obvious that your neighbours don't want to be exposed to your personal taste in music when you happen to feel like it. A very occasional, special event fair enough but not just because it's a sunny day.

Mamanyt · 30/05/2021 16:37

OK, let's assume that this is unthinking and a bit selfish, and simply ask politely if they would mind turning the volume down just a bit. Might work a treat, you know, and leave a good feeling all around.

AngryBananaSund · 30/05/2021 16:37

I’ve always wondered if an echo machine would be useful in these circumstances as anything they play would instantly have a really annoying echo. Of course I’ve never done this, but i...

Vodkaandballoon · 30/05/2021 16:36

Honestly I'm not an anti-social dickhead, I'm a perfectly nice person & I get along well with all of my neighbours. I like to use & enjoy my garden
& sometimes that will include listening to my perfectly put together sunny afternoon Playlist. If my neighbour asked me to turn it down I would but she's more likely to stand & chat over the fence. I guess we all live in very different worlds. Party on with your headphones 🎧

summeratlast2021 · 30/05/2021 16:35

Hate it

Montalbanosono · 30/05/2021 16:32

I think during the day people can do what they want in their gardens. It’s only really annoying if very late at night and it’s keeping people awake.

What about those of us who are working from home? Or just want a bit of peace and quiet or to listen to the birds? Why do I have to listen to your music? Would be ok for me to come into your garden to sunbathe? No? Well keep your noise to yourself then. Keep it down or put headphones on. I don't even have a garden and I can hear my neighbour's music from across the road. That's just selfish.

A rule of thumb should be - if everyone did what I am doing, what would happen? Well it would be hideous if everyone decided to play their music loudly at once. So don't do it.

ICanSmellSummerComing · 30/05/2021 16:32

No one who inflicts noise will ever understand until they have to endure it at the wrong times for them.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 30/05/2021 16:30

Lots of the noise is very easily tilerable. Would be unreasonable to eant silence all the time, I think that's what we all can agree on.

But some of the noise is just so unnecessarily grinding. Like radios on at 10am and off at 8pm. Why. Where I grew up we made lits of noise but this wouldn't fly in small gardens. Radio on for couple of hours? Fine. All day? Shitty.

Crockof · 30/05/2021 16:29

I love it, I love the noise of people and music and laughter. Granted none of my neighbours are late night playing dicks but I like the sounds of life.

ICanSmellSummerComing · 30/05/2021 16:29

Yes indeed headphones!

ICanSmellSummerComing · 30/05/2021 16:28

I have disagree that when we live within ear shot of others we can do what we want.
I'd never for instance start a bonfire today, I wouldn't play hours and hours of music...

Life is so much easier if we show some consideration to people around us.
I love to hear a party, chatter, music but I know it's a one off and won't be going off tomorrow.

Any behaviour that is day after day you can go to the council with and they can request the neighbours are considerate.

This is awful. Why do we all have to suffer noise pollution? Why can't your DH and friend wear headphones?
Rubyrecka · 30/05/2021 16:25

Honestly I'd blast Metallica black album and drink my mojito in peace

Daleksatemyshed · 30/05/2021 16:24

Because @Vodkaandballoon it's called common courtesey, ie unless you live in the middle of nowhere you don't have the right to enjoy yourself at the expense of everyone else. If everyone liked the same music then fair enough but they don't.

MaMelon · 30/05/2021 16:19

Some people shouldn’t be “lucky enough” to buy a house with a garden - it results in their neighbours being unlucky.
