Lovely day, neighbours playing music in garden

Live in a detached house, so it’s not as though we have anyone too close, and reasonable sized gardens, but we do have other houses around us, so don’t expect silence.

Neighbours over the back are in their garden as it’s a lovely day, fair enough so are we, but they have also got their music playing. Loudly.

Aibu to think it’s the height of rudeness to have music blaring in the garden knowing full well others around can hear it too? It’s Christian easy listening type of music.

Tempted to put a bit of Motörhead on the Sonos, but that would be a bit passive aggressive. So I’m just stewing in silence and posting here instead - it’s certainly not making me feel very Christian!!

I would never play music outside in the garden! I don't think the neighbours would like my taste in 80's tunes as they weren't even born. It's just a no from me. If I wanted to listen to music in the garden (would rather hear the birds) I would be the one wearing the headphones.

Vodkaandballon · 31/05/2021 18:25

Jeez, that's quite the character assassination I've got there. My music isn't shifty, I don't blast it out, I occasionally listen to it on a sunny day. My friends aren't drunken louts because I have a few bbq's in the summer. I'm not a selfish shit & I don't cause problems for my neighbours. I have lovely neighbours they also use their gardens in a similar way. Brace yourselves we even sit out the front sometimes & have a little street gathering. Cool your jets ladies

InFiveMins · 31/05/2021 18:25

YANBU and the people who do this are entitled pricks so I would have no hesitation in blasting heavy metal music on your speakers at full volume and go out for a few hours. That should sort it Smile

TinselTinsel · 31/05/2021 18:21

@Imapotato

I think during the day people can do what they want in their gardens. It’s only really annoying if very late at night and it’s keeping people awake.

If you feel you want to put on your own music, go ahead, it’s your garden.

I'm with your nut I do tend to listen to my music with my headphones on because I like it loud and both of my neighbours are elderly and I don't like being told off 😂
csigeek · 31/05/2021 18:17

Is just be glad it’s not at 11pm to be honest.
Last weekend our neighbours at the back were singing McFly Star Girl at the top of their extremely out of tune drunken voices. I loudly sang “Shut the fuck up” along with the tune out the window at them.
Music in the daytime? Fill yer boots.

Caesargeezer · 31/05/2021 18:11

It’s so annoying and pure selfishness. People can’t help a lawn mower noise etc etc, and I don’t mind the noise of children whatsoever, but when I was younger I don’t ever remember hearing our neighbours’ playing music in the garden. It’s the self before community attitude which seems to be increasing.

AnnieSnap · 31/05/2021 17:56

I think neighbours should be considerate and not have music blaring unless it’s an exception. My neighbour called today to say they were having a get together an it might be loud. They do this about 2 or 3 times a year. I don’t mind as they recognise it might be a bit of a nuisance, so give a warning and it’s not a regular thing.

When I had a neighbour behaving like yours (not christian music, that would probably be worse), having asked them politely to keep it down, and finding they didn’t, I found the music that was most opposite to theirs (classical in this case), placed a big speaker against their wall (it was inside the house) and put it on full blast. Within minutes, their’s was turned down. I would do the same in the garden if necessary (I prefer to have a friendly chat and resolve things amicably, but that doesn’t work with some). Of course it would sound awful to other neighbours and it doesn’t take long to make the point, so in the end, probably a relief to other neighbours too.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 31/05/2021 17:51

Impossible to get LA to take an interest in daytime garden music though.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 31/05/2021 17:50

It totally depends on the volume. It’s nice to have a bit of music in the garden but not ok to have it playing loudly. My either side neighbours are considerate but opposite is a man-pig who sits on his sad he’d like a big hairy gorilla with his music blaring and his fish/wife woman screeching at her kids. We’ve planted lots of conifers hoping to drown them out and to stop him sitting on his shed roof looking into our garden.

DrEllie · 31/05/2021 17:36

Under the Noise Act 1996 noise doesn't have to be late at night. Often its the repetitiveness that can be an issue, so if it's frequent. Loud music and other household noise at an inappropriate volume at any time can be judged a noise nuisance (lawyer here!)

cherish123 · 31/05/2021 17:33

It is a bit anti-social. I used to do it as a teenager and my parents complained. Now I understand how they felt.

Bertiebiscuit · 31/05/2021 17:32

Several of my neighbours do this regularly - it's Vile and thoughtless but complaining has done no good - essentially means I usually go out on warm weekends - but I make sure to have a really smoky BBQ or bonfire esp if they have washing out - I'm not too proud to be passive aggressive

@vivainsomnia

EVERYONE has the right to enjoy their garden. For some thats with music for some it's without. Why can't the two live together and get their way sometimes? It doesn't have to be all or nothing either way Standard words of those who are just self-centered parasites who can't fathom the notion of respect for others.

As per my name, I suffer from insomnia. I am up at 4am most nights. Would you have that same attitude if every night at 4am, I were to have jazz music loud on so that it woke you up and you couldn't sleep? You'd be massively pissed off, not going about how it's ok because I have the right to enjoy my home.

You're attitude would be that most people sleep at 4am so this should be respected. Well most people don't want to have to listen to other people's music when they are relaxing in the garden, so the same principle applies and the needs of others should be respected.

You'd be one in a teeny tiny minority who'd want to do that. Music in gardens is something plenty of people want to do.

And in fairness I wouldn't mind if you wanted to play music at 4am every so often. My neighbour does the odd early shift and gets up at 3am and puts the radio in her kitchen on with windows open in summer. I hear it, I understand it, no drama.

It's about being flexible and considerate or what other people want and need to do to be happy.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 31/05/2021 14:01

NB I'm pretty noise adverse, but cutting the grass or using a hedge trimmer during daylight hours is eminently reasonable IMO. For some reason I felt it a less intrusive noise than music I dislike; at least it's constant and can be tuned out like white radio noise.

Other people, eh? Bleurgh.

DynamoKev · 31/05/2021 14:00

Why the fuck should I have to listen to anyone else's shit taste in music?

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 31/05/2021 13:58

Get Rammstein's 'Pussy' from Spotify and play it very loudly, on a loop.

vivainsomnia · 31/05/2021 13:56

People behind us have been cutting their grass for an hour now and that's irratating too
Except cutting the grass is an activity than can't really be avoided. Most people would otherwise and if they could make quiet lawnmowers, I'm sure they'd be very popular.

Listening to loud music is in no way a necessity.

@gurglebelly

I wouldn't expect anyone to wear headphones while listening to music in their garden, but it is perfectly possible to have it at a volume where you can hear it but it doesn't intrude too much on the neighbours. Unfortunately a lot of the 'it's my garden I can do what I want' brigade are incapable of listening to their music at anything less than full volume
This. Just don't be a dick basically
Motherof3dogs · 31/05/2021 13:04

@Bigbluebuttons

@ Motherof3dogs they hate you. They live in the country for peace, not fucking Tepid FM.
Well I don't complain about their screeching grandchildren in their pool. It's all about tolerance.
SavoyCabbage · 31/05/2021 12:01

@Motherof3dogs

Dh listens to radio 2 constantly in the garden when working or relaxing, Its not loud and we only have 2 sets of neighbours as it's rural. I hope they don't think we're the neighbours from hell!

Radio two is the station of choice of our deaf wanker neighbours. We definitely hate them!

We've tried listening to it ourselves to see if it's less annoying but all our radios are digital and theirs is an old-style one so they are at a slightly different time.

Bigbluebuttons · 31/05/2021 11:37

@ motogogo it’s inflicting it on other people.

@Vodkaandballoon

How is it rude & offensive to play music in your own garden?. I was lucky enough to buy a house with a garden & I will bloody well use it. I will play some music, my kids will have nerf wars out there & camp out with their friends. I will have friends over for drunken bbq's, hell I might even get a hot tub this year. All of that is OK because it's MY garden.
So you can do anything you want in your garden, even though you are stopping all of your neighbours doing what they want in their gardens? You selfish shit.
SchrodingersImmigrant · 31/05/2021 10:28

@Rosebel

Yes it's annoying and I'd probably put music on too. People behind us have been cutting their grass for an hour now and that's irratating too (especially as they only have a small garden so don't know how it's taken an hour). Thankfully we're going ou in a minute.
I was carefully peeking throught upstairs windows last week when someone was mowing lawn few houses down. It only caught my attention because it waas well over 45 min. Same size like mine. They went over it again and again and again and again and again... Igo over twice from different directions and it takes 15 min tops. Hope they are ok tbh🙈
