Lovely day, neighbours playing music in garden

Live in a detached house, so it’s not as though we have anyone too close, and reasonable sized gardens, but we do have other houses around us, so don’t expect silence.

Neighbours over the back are in their garden as it’s a lovely day, fair enough so are we, but they have also got their music playing. Loudly.

Aibu to think it’s the height of rudeness to have music blaring in the garden knowing full well others around can hear it too? It’s Christian easy listening type of music.

Tempted to put a bit of Motörhead on the Sonos, but that would be a bit passive aggressive. So I’m just stewing in silence and posting here instead - it’s certainly not making me feel very Christian!!

I have had to deal with my neighbours building a bloody extensive for weeks/months. Weeks and months still to go.

Or it's the another neighbour having a tree felled. Or my other neighbour putting up various sheds and fences and decking.

Or very loud mowing in the early hours.

Or the CONSTANT burning of shit. It's bloody open fires and wood burners all white and then bbqs and bonfires all summer. The summer is the worse as I then have to sit in a stupidly hot house with all my windows shut and can't use my garden.

So if I want to play some music on occasion in my garden in the summer. I bloody will do.

Nearly47 · 01/06/2021 17:05

Oh Bitter... I feel for you. My husband got one of those and I can't scape the sound from anywhere in the house with all doors shut I can still hear it loud and clear. It drives me insane. Imagine it must be the same in a flat. Thank god it doesn't seem to travel outside our house. Detached house with thick walls. We tested.

Nearly47 · 01/06/2021 17:00

Play some rap. The vibrations of the bit are more annoying than guitar with the added ofense of dirty lyrics Halo

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 01/06/2021 16:53

It could be worse, I live in a flat and one of my neighbours appears to have acquired a saxophone

Viggohytten · 01/06/2021 16:49

I would love to live in the country. Can’t afford it at all.

Viggohytten · 01/06/2021 16:47

Adding sympathy and support! (Haven’t read the whole thread).

Mine have children playing (nice) men talking overly loudly (less nice) loud music (awful) and one of the me thinks part of our garden is part of his for sitting - this feels weirdly invasive. (I don’t want do go out and aggravate things - we’ve had a couple of run ins).

h1nch · 01/06/2021 16:45

I totally get where you are coming from. I do sometimes wonder if my neighbour understands that not everyone shares his taste in techno or that my other neighbour needs to move on from playing the same 5 bars of Coldplay’s ‘yellow’ repeatedly for 3 hrs on his Yamaha keyboard. And don’t the people 5 doors down ever tell their daughter that she can vary the pitch and time of her voice rather than just screaming at volume 10 every time she opens her mouth. However, I try to be pragmatic - it’s not all day every day and I could have neighbours that do much worse things - my last neighbour stalked me and I had to get the police involved and eventually I moved house to get away from him so by comparison I think I can live with a bit of techno every other weekend xx

Mistressofpemberly · 01/06/2021 13:42

If it’s not everyday then I think it’s ok. One of my neighbours does this all day and evening all summer. Absolutely blaring. I don’t mind their music taste but would really like to listen to my music sometimes

Why does everyone object to people enjoying themselves in their own garden - its daytime for goodness sake. Go and live in the country if you don't like neighbour noise
Because you are polluting other people’s outdoor space. It’s selfish and self-entitled. If someone played loud organ music next to your garden, I doubt you would see that as someone “just enjoying themselves in their own garden”! 🙄
RockingMyFiftiesNot · 01/06/2021 10:02

I have no problem hearing other people's music at a sensible volume but it is rude and inconsiderate to have music blaring so loudly you can't have a conversation in your own garden. The people out the back of my neighbours do this all weekend, every weekend when it is warm . It is annoying enough for us, but my neighbours can't read or have a conversation. Asking them politely to turn it down has the opposite effect.

PP who said you should move to the country if you don't like noise - I'd agree if OP was complaining about hearing music at all, but there is a limit to what is acceptable. Too many people only care about themselves.

Since you haven't bothered to read the thread...its because your "enjoyment" ruins everyone elses enjoyment of their gardens. In modern estates, one selfish self centred garden user can ruin the day for 30 other gardens, with their noise.

Horrid selfish attitude. I suspect many people would want a quiet, detached house where neighbours don’t intrude thoughtlessly. Many can’t afford that though - so need neighbours who are considerate.

Your ‘music’ is other people’s noise. I like opera and sacred music. How would you feel about Schubert’s Ave Maria on frequent repeat at high Volume? I would enjoy that, but understand others might not.
@nannykatherine stuff like Matt Redman.

It’s like Norah Jones, Eva Cassidy etc but all about God and Jesus.
Why does your right to enjoy music trump my right not to hear your music so I can enjoy my garden??
KingsOfTheWildFrontier · 01/06/2021 09:22

I feel your pain and would like advice too. The a*hole neighbour over the back of me has been playing loud music every day and night in their garden for a least a week now. His front and back gardens are a complete mess, he has now dumped lots of rubbish in the field and against my other neighbours fence, he seems to think he owns the place.
I'm not good with confrontation and tend to be either passive aggressive or blow my top so not said anything yet. Although if any rubbish finds it's way behind my fence, will be phoning the council. Also tempted to play Radio 3 on my phone as close to his garden as possible but don't want to disturb other neighbours. How his neighbours on either side of him put up with it I don't know. Don't know if he works, keep hoping he just effs off!

purplepentagram · 01/06/2021 09:13

I’d be putting some AC/DC on or sabbath and then turn it up.

Because you're not enjoying yourself IN your garden, you're inflicting your 'taste' of music on others, if you want to listen to music put head phones on.

@ARabbitisaBunny

I feel your pain! Over the last year, our neighbours have started playing music whenever they sit in their garden. They’ve lived here for years and so this is a new, surprising turn of events. A couple of weeks ago, they were playing Paloma Faith’s ‘Only Love Can Hurt Like This’ at full volume on a lovely sunny, Sunday afternoon and I felt quite murderous. There’s only so much Olly Murs, James Morrison and Alexandra Burke on a loop that people can be expected to tolerate. I’ll definitely go round the next time it starts up so it’ll either get better, or much, much worse!
This would annoy me because that is such shite music.
Barney60 · 01/06/2021 08:59

Feel your pain too, its so very rude, in the days of head phones, i pods ect its not necessary for everyone to have to listen to it. But if having a party and its an every now and then situation i could bite my lip.
Take a CD round and say if i must listen to your music can you play something i like!

@Merryweather80

When I asked my neighbour to turn the music down at 10 pm and had woken my kids, I had a delightful mouthful of abuse. ”I'll live my life however the f@*@k* I line and you cant tell me what to do”. I genuinely think these people don't care about anyone but themselves and #livingmybestlife.
They don't.

Absolutely spot on, User.

Put some lil Kim on loudly ... the hardcore album should make them get the hint 😊

AlwaysLatte · 31/05/2021 23:18

Music in gardens isn't on. Unless it's a rare party or special event.

M2B19 · 31/05/2021 23:11

For me it would really depend on how often it’s happening. I could forgive it every now and again or on an occasion but not every day.
