Lovely day, neighbours playing music in garden

Live in a detached house, so it’s not as though we have anyone too close, and reasonable sized gardens, but we do have other houses around us, so don’t expect silence.

Neighbours over the back are in their garden as it’s a lovely day, fair enough so are we, but they have also got their music playing. Loudly.

Aibu to think it’s the height of rudeness to have music blaring in the garden knowing full well others around can hear it too? It’s Christian easy listening type of music.

Tempted to put a bit of Motörhead on the Sonos, but that would be a bit passive aggressive. So I’m just stewing in silence and posting here instead - it’s certainly not making me feel very Christian!!

I just asked my DH if he's on MN when I read this - although our neighbour's choice is more Ibiza style (we're late 50's so it's not really our taste)

Er, I'm mid 50's and absolutely love Ibiza tunes, classical or christian music would drive me totally nuts. Speak for yourself. The fab dance/rave scene in the late 80's/90's was full of people who will now be in their 50's

EdgeOfFortyNine · 30/05/2021 15:42

Someone up the road from us is currently playing their music so loud that I can’t hear our television. There’s loud and then there’s loud.

Mythologies · 30/05/2021 15:40

“.People are perfectly entitled to listen to music in their garden. It would only become a problem for me if they started playing it at unreasonable hours. If you don't like their music, put your own on. It's not passive aggressive.”
WTF
OFFS! Loud music played for hours on end is pig fucking ignorant - end of - at any fucking time - in fact especially on a nice day

Chickychickydodah · 30/05/2021 15:39

I think a bit of rammstein or AC/DC on full blast for a while sounds good 👍🏻

Livpool · 30/05/2021 15:36

This wouldn't bother me and I have never seen the anger towards it irl that I see on Mumsnet.

Lots of people do it but if not all the time or late at night I don't care. If it bothers you speak to your neighbour

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

My neighbour plays her guitar and sings Christian songs in the garden.

I just want to kill her really.

🤣
Mythologies · 30/05/2021 15:28

Why do people suggest headphones!!!
I don’t want to wear headphones in the garden- I want to listen to the birds and reasonable children noise and maybe the occasional muted music.
The FUCKERS who have had horrible excruciatingly loud base on since 8 this morning - BTW they are at the bottom of the garden two doors down- should wear headphones.
I will wear headphones if I want to listen to the radio because the neighbours should NOT be expected to have to listen to my radio.
What the fuck is wrong with some people
And yes - when it stops for a few minutes is is like when a headache goes - pretty sure headphones don’t even keep that level of base out

whatshallihavefordinner · 30/05/2021 15:27

I'm extremely lucky, none of my neighbours play music outside and I back onto a school playing field, so weekends and holidays are peaceful anyway. I do miss my lovely young neighbour who moved last year, she was a beautiful pianist and summer evenings were bliss listening to her play.

NameChange74567 · 30/05/2021 15:25

I feel your pain, I can hear my neighbour across the road playing music in their garden. It it drives me mad, especially when trying to get the babies to sleep.

YANBU, I hate people who feel the need to "share" their taste in music! Of course they have the "right" to play the music... but it's bloody annoying!
No one has the right to inflict their music on other people. Seriously hate this about the UK. Seems to be the thing to blast music.
FlyingSoHigh · 30/05/2021 15:19

Outside is a shared space - putting on music might be what you want, but is absolutely shit for your neighbours.

Notimeforaname · 30/05/2021 15:16

Had a great time in my garden yesterday listening to my neighbour blasting the Beatles.
He's making a habit of it recently as his wife just died. He gets out to the garden every day and puts on her favourite musicSmile
I dont find it rude. People are enjoying themselves. Ive heard him and other neighbours sing along to my garden music at times.

CastAColdEye · 30/05/2021 15:08

Really inconsiderate.
Tape the music and when she's quietly pottering in the garden blast it back through speakers.
This scenario would only work if she were to then complain about your noise. Your noise which is in fact her feckin noise.

On second thoughts scrap that idea. She'd most likely never complain and you'd be left feeling even more angry.

Winniewonka · 30/05/2021 15:08

I'll swap any of yours for the constant 'white boy rap' that's been playing for hours in the garden across from mine!
Factor in home owner also has a laugh like Woody Woodpecker ! It drives me crazy every time we have a rare but of Sun.
Trust me, the family are NOT the type to take kindly to being asked to it down.

I live in the middle of nowhere and have just one neighbour. Lovely lovely people but they built a summerhouse last year which faces towards us and they play music non-fucking-stop every weekend. They do turn it down when they know we're at home but it honestly does my head in as I can always hear it.
I just want silence!

Cleverpolly3 · 30/05/2021 15:00

@Imapotato

I think during the day people can do what they want in their gardens. It’s only really annoying if very late at night and it’s keeping people awake.

If you feel you want to put on your own music, go ahead, it’s your garden.

Clearly you don’t have this sort of utterly selfish shit to contend with

It’s absolutely not ok to inflict your music at loud volume all day in a residential garden. I bet if the shoes was on the other foot they’d be round there remonstrating

billy1966 · 30/05/2021 14:56

So rude and inconsiderate.

dreamingbohemian · 30/05/2021 14:43

@Crazycakelady17

Oops DH is outside with his friend laying a new patio with music playing I don’t think it’s rude it’s just as annoying as our local church bells chiming every hour of the local school kids playing out we have two within 100 metres Put some headphones in or go inside
I really hate this argument. Surely it's for the people who want to listen to loud music who should wear headphones or go inside, or go live in the middle of nowhere.

And no way is playing music for hours just as annoying as an hourly church bells

mybrainhertz · 30/05/2021 14:39

There's a reason why the US Military use music and sound to mentally torture people. It works.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 30/05/2021 14:39

I love to hear a bit of music in the garden if it's not too intrusive. Where I am now, in my garden with the radio on, I can hear someone else's music further up. It's loud but it's just background noise and I can still hear the birds singing in the nearby trees so it doesn't feel too much.

Try not to let it bother you because otherwise you'll never use your outdoor space and it'll annoy you every day.

Mindymomo · 30/05/2021 14:37

My neighbour has all family around, must be about 20 of them, the children just scream and shout and the adults are the same. My neighbour is a very quiet person, so don’t know how she puts up with it. They’ve got music on, I don’t know why. A balloon has just come over my garden, which my dog enjoyed playing with.

ARabbitisaBunny · 30/05/2021 14:33

I feel your pain! Over the last year, our neighbours have started playing music whenever they sit in their garden. They’ve lived here for years and so this is a new, surprising turn of events. A couple of weeks ago, they were playing Paloma Faith’s ‘Only Love Can Hurt Like This’ at full volume on a lovely sunny, Sunday afternoon and I felt quite murderous. There’s only so much Olly Murs, James Morrison and Alexandra Burke on a loop that people can be expected to tolerate. I’ll definitely go round the next time it starts up so it’ll either get better, or much, much worse!
