Lovely day, neighbours playing music in garden

Live in a detached house, so it’s not as though we have anyone too close, and reasonable sized gardens, but we do have other houses around us, so don’t expect silence.

Neighbours over the back are in their garden as it’s a lovely day, fair enough so are we, but they have also got their music playing. Loudly.

Aibu to think it’s the height of rudeness to have music blaring in the garden knowing full well others around can hear it too? It’s Christian easy listening type of music.

Tempted to put a bit of Motörhead on the Sonos, but that would be a bit passive aggressive. So I’m just stewing in silence and posting here instead - it’s certainly not making me feel very Christian!!

My view is if they were reasonable they wouldn’t do it in the first place!

Roxholme32 · 31/07/2024 15:51

All these suggestions about people should wear ear buds to cancel out the music, why not those who play their loud music use earphones!!!

Roxholme32 · 31/07/2024 15:47

Just a guess here, but your suggestion leads me to think you’re probably the one whose making the loud noise on a beautiful summers day making everyone’s life around a misery, just a guess, but I don’t think I’m far off the mark!

Or maybe read the bloody thread and recognise this was a year ago.

And 3 years since this thread was actually started 🙄

Strim and then mow your lawn - start drilling something even planks of wood that will make listening to their music hard for them and their know that noise not nice when your relaxing

Put speaker/music at the rear of your garden, baby shark on repeat, go out for lunch for a few hours.
That'll get the message across

How is it rude & offensive to play music in your own garden?. I was lucky enough to buy a house with a garden & I will bloody well use it. I will play some music, my kids will have nerf wars out there & camp out with their friends. I will have friends over for drunken bbq's, hell I might even get a hot tub this year. All of that is OK because it's MY garden.

It is this kind of attitude that makes other people’s lives a misery. Super selfish and I hope I’m never your neighbour.

just because you own a property doesn’t give you the right to inflict noise on other people 🙄

AnnieSnap · 04/06/2021 18:50

@Mammyofasuperbaby

Well it got worse today. The neighbours are away( normally very considerate ect) and a workman started a bloody generator at 7.17am, had it on for nearly an hour and then left. Why, just why?
I can live with things like that because it’s temporary. Unfortunately, living in suburbia, the temporary noise caused by electric saws caused by people having their trees pruned in the spring is repeated again and again, but I know it will eventually stop. Of course that’s completely the wrong time of the year for the poor bloody trees, but so many people seem oblivious to that!

You dont think actual speakers in your garden are inconsiderate?

We have speakers for use in our garden and we're not inconsiderate.

We don't "blare" the music out either; we have it on loud enough so we can hear it but not so much that we can't still talk to each other without shouting. Because we're listening to the same thing together, headphones would actually be more unsociable!

I know that it doesn't annoy the neighbours because a) they're usually either playing their own music or doing DIY or whatever else and b) they've told us they don't mind.

Nanny0gg · 04/06/2021 00:42
@AnnieSnap - I don't blare it or anything. I had it on low for an hour while reading my book. Unless were having a party/BBQ (which our lovely neighbours are always invited to) its always off by 6/7 the latest.
Every house around me has a trampoline or swimming pool for their children. Modern life includes noise from time to time. Our house is also next to a primary school. During term time I can hear them playing out all day. It doesn't bother me.
Words fail me....

wendywoopywoo222 · 03/06/2021 14:55

I feel your pain. Our neighbours have music on in the garden constantly as soon as the suns out. They have all their freinds round, smoke weed, get drunk, swear a lot, sing. Usually about ten they have a falling out which may or may not include fighting and/or the police.

The one good thing I can say is that they are always quiet by around ten pm.

RantyAnty · 03/06/2021 14:48

There's enough noise without adding to it.

Why can't people just wear earbuds or headphones to listen to music outside? The noise cancelling ones are great.

yikesanotherbooboo · 03/06/2021 14:44

Of course it is inconsiderate.

AnnieSnap · 02/06/2021 20:48

@MummyMayo1988 No, there are no ‘good neighbour points’ with speakers in the garden. Just know that you are probably ruining someone else’s enjoyment of their garden.

MaMelon · 02/06/2021 16:48

No, not really. Put your headphones on and have some consideration for others - that will win you good neighbour points.

MummyMayo1988 · 02/06/2021 16:41

Oh my goodness - we might be that neighbour 😳
We have speakers in the garden. Don't put them on all day everyday but I am currently outside, music on low and reading my book. I tend to play a lot of 80's or 90's music. If that wins me any good neighbour points 🤷‍♀️🤣

SchrodingersImmigrant · 02/06/2021 09:08

@SallyCinnabon and it's not just with the noise. It's with so many things! I think I once asked on another topic, why does the person suffering have to be the one to make allowances, not the other one.

StoneofDestiny · 02/06/2021 09:02

Why does everyone object to people enjoying themselves in their own garden - its daytime for goodness sake. Go and live in the country if you don't like neighbour noise

Pop your address on here and I'm certain enough people will help you to understand.
Between us I'm sure we can drop the following round in the daytime for you to enjoy ....a few barking dogs, screaming kids, parents who scream at their kids, loud thumping music that covers the neighbourhood gardens, party goers that shout over the thumping loud music, drunken asses who just love to swear and guffaw at any inane comment and maybe the odd un-oiled trampoline rammed against your fence so kids can watch your every move as you enjoy your space.

Thankfully I don't have any of this happen near me, but read enough on Mumsnet to know that there are inconsiderate arses who inflict all this on their neighbours 'because it's my F'n garden and I can do what I want'.

TheQueef · 02/06/2021 08:17

@SallyCinnabon

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.

SallyCinnabon · 02/06/2021 08:05

Headphones any use to you?

🤣 Yes OP why don’t YOU put on headphones so you can’t hear the noise THEY are making. I’ll go out in my garden and spray manure and people can just put pegs on their noses if they don’t like it. I’ll play around with some radioactive material and people can put a hazmat on if they don’t like it 🤣

Stupid examples I know, and not comparable in any way but why is it always ‘person put headphones in’ not ‘person turn down the blaring music.’ Are we just so used to putting up with people’s crap that we don’t see anything wrong with changing what we do and putting ourselves out because of other selfish people?

I don’t mind the odd bit of quiet music wafting over in the summer it’s (inevitable that’s how sound works) but there’s no need for loud blasting music. Imagine if everyone did it at that level it’d be unbearable. People should be able to sit in their gardens and enjoy this mini warm spell without having to put headphones in.

InTheDrunkTank · 02/06/2021 07:02

Why does everyone object to people enjoying themselves in their own garden - its daytime for goodness sake. Go and live in the country if you don't like neighbour noise

Because your enjoyment ruins everyone else's enjoyment. If you want to do what you want without thinking of others you should move to the country. If you live with close neighbours you need to be considerate.

Because this is spoiling the neighbours' enjoyment of their gardens. It's really not difficult and anyone who doesn't understand that is selfish and inconsiderate.

Horrid selfish attitude. I suspect many people would want a quiet, detached house where neighbours don’t intrude thoughtlessly. Many can’t afford that though - so need neighbours who are considerate.

Your ‘music’ is other people’s noise. I like opera and sacred music. How would you feel about Schubert’s Ave Maria on frequent repeat at high Volume? I would enjoy that, but understand others might not.
