Our gorgeous toddler Dd has red/ginger hair, she’s very pale, with blue eyes and barely there eyebrows and eyelashes.
We’re both dark haired, with tanned skin and blue eyes, our girl doesn’t really look like us yet. Where we are (not in the uk) ginger hair is seen as very unusual and special, but we plan to move back to the uk in the next few years. I have a red headed friend who was bullied for years. When I look at my sweet, innocent girl, I feel fearful for the way she might be treated in a few years.
Anyone else have a red headed child? Is her colouring likely to change at this stage (2.4 months old)
Her hair and colouring is stunning and special to us, but people can be arseholes in life and I feel sad if she’ll have to encounter that.

Your questions are actually offensive and therefore part of the problem.

Callingallskeletons · 29/10/2020 19:59

Both of our nieces have the most beautiful red hair like their mother - neither have been bullied and my best friend is also a red head
Other than the odd “Oi Ginger” she has never had to deal with bullying as a result

I don’t think it’s that much of a thing anymore tbh xX

Shirls22 · 29/10/2020 19:55

All three of my children had red hair, my daughter lives her hair and is beautiful and proud, my youngest son made having red hair cool as he has a big personality and used it to his advantage, they are all adults now, encourage her to be proud of it, it is beautiful and let her know that the most special children have red hair xx

Hangingwithmygnomies · 29/10/2020 19:54

My son is a proper redhead and I admit I'm a little worried as I used to get teased for being a redhead (I was not as red as he is and have got more brown as I've gotten older) and I think sometimes boys might be teased a bit more so I'm trying to give him the resilience to not let it bother him if anyone says anything negative about his hair colour. That being said, I really do wish I had £1 for everytime someone comments on how lovely his hair is as I'd be minted by now Grin

Haven't rtft but it's 2020 and often kids nowadays love red hair so it can't see it being an issue as it was 20 years back. My husband is ginger and has never once been bullied because of it.

thebabewiththepower · 29/10/2020 19:50

My 7 year daughter has long, very curly and very ginger hair. She LOVES it, she has always had people commenting on how stunning it is (it is striking) and she often refers to herself as a ginger. She’s still young and has had no comments at school (other than compliments) yet. Everywhere we go, people tell her how lovely her hair is and so far she loves it. [we’re in the south of england]

Ravenesque · 29/10/2020 19:46

Natural redhead. The worst thing for me was someone calling out ginger when they wanted to get my attention so I just didn't respond. But there were a lot of people who thought my hair colour was beautiful and complimented it. My major issue with it has been that because it was such a pale red, strawberry blonde, and fine that it's an absolute bastard to do anything with.

Your daughter will be just fine.

jcrussell86 · 29/10/2020 19:42

@Mary54

Our dd (24now) is a redhead by choice. This follows burgundy and green. Personally, I think she looks stunning. She is often complimented on her hair -she naturally has the pale skin to go with it. No one has ever said anything negative about it. If they do, point out that red is the royal color. Henry VIII Elizabeth 1etc
And Boudicca!

DS is ginger AF. Reeeally ginger. No negative comments any time from anyone so far. He's 6, and immensely happy with his hair colour. Times have definitely moved on!

FelicisNox · 29/10/2020 19:34

I was teased for my red hair but never bullied in the true sense of the word.

Red hair is much more fashionable than it was ever since scientists started telling everyone what an amazingly special genetic anomaly it is and asking "could it be alien DNA?".

I wouldn't worry. Just teach your DC how amazing they are, build confidence and they'll be fine.

Ddot · 29/10/2020 19:33

Vile people say vile things

Ddot · 29/10/2020 19:32

As a child I got teased because I had very curly frizzy hair and huge eyes, as an adult my most striking features were, my tamed curls and huge eyes.

Buddytheelf85 · 29/10/2020 19:30

Katie Hopkins has not helped by tweeting that ginger babies should be drowned at birth!

She tweeted what??!!?

I know nothing should surprise about that woman but what an absolutely vile thing to say!

Ddot · 29/10/2020 19:27

I noticed that their seemed to be a lot of red haired children being born this decade, so will blend in more. I worked with children and did see a little teasing. Dont think it's as bad as when I was a child. It's a lot more fashionable now. Children are mean and will always find something to have a go at. I dated a red head, hehe fond memories, he did battle reenactments as a viking. Anyho I digress, sorry what was I saying

Croissantio · 29/10/2020 19:24

I am a natural ginger and in my 31 years of life I have never dyed my hair. It is so healthy and I get so many nice comments about it.

As a child I did get called names a bit...but my dark haired friend got called names for having curls and people were called names for glasses/braces/weight.

Kids are mean, thats life. Just make sure you positively reinforce how gorgeous your kid's hair is.

Squiz81 · 29/10/2020 19:20

I really don’t think being ginger is an issue these days. I always think it looks gorgeous!

notanotheronepleasee · 29/10/2020 19:17

Anything unusual or striking like that is really fashionable now days
Standing out is good now days

psych2405 · 29/10/2020 18:50

I'm a natural redhead, I was never bullied at school because of it-odd name calling once in a while but no more than a friend who wore glasses etc, now I'm an adult I'm stopped almost daily by people commenting on my very curly, very bright hair....embrace it!!

Dollygirl2008 · 29/10/2020 18:45

My DD12 has the most amazing, long blonde hair. She can't wait to dye it ginger!!!!!

Milkshake7489 · 29/10/2020 18:44

I'm ginger and was never bullied for it. Try not to worry!

pollymere · 29/10/2020 18:38

Kids don't really get picked on for stuff like that anymore.

mynameisbiggles · 29/10/2020 18:35

I have always thought (and still do) that girls with red or copper coloured hair are rare and utterly beautiful. Before I married, (a brunette), I dated two girls - 'gingers' they were often called, somewhat cruelly, but their pale skin and glorious hair just made me fall in love with them. Sadly, neither agreed to marriage, but I envy the men who ultimately won their hearts. Don't worry about your DD she will be strong and will win-out in the end.

Forgottenwhatsleepis · 29/10/2020 18:35

I have a pale skinned, freckled all over, red head DS18, his colouring is auburn, and has never been bullied. You'll find a lot of British love red heads tbh!

JFM27 · 29/10/2020 18:29

As a natural very dark haired brunette who when she started going grey dyed her hair red id say dont worry, my skin was always too fair for my dark hair and light eyes now my hair is red its perfect. I get lots of compliments on it,when a boring brunette i didnt.

Make sure your daughter embraces her hair colour, and make her feel its great.Im very petite was always smaller than others when a child, but because my lovely mum always told me yes i was tiny but i was in proportion, ive always been slim too,so i must never feel different to others i never had a complex about being tiny, even now i rarely notice it till i stand beside someone much taller,or cant reach a top shelf,i normally feel talllol.

Chickoletta · 29/10/2020 18:25

I was an auburn haired child (now mostly brown) and was never teased. I’ve been a teacher and Head of Year for 20 years and can honestly say that I’ve never encountered bullying based on ginger hair colour.

My 10 yr old DS is utterly in love with a beautiful red-haired girl in his class - won’t admit it but we found poems he wrote about her, including her ‘flame coloured hair’. 😊
