Do you think there’s more racism since the BLM movement?

I was discussing this with my husband this morning and I think misogyny is worse since ‘me too’ happened and I was wondering if you’re seeing the same.

Apart from the people doing the blockade you mean who represent the organisations?

Surely, people can support an organisation and disagree with those actions. There are different BLM chapters and are not all alike. It’s not that different then there being churches who practice the same religion but do things differently.

I support BLM when it comes to trying to stop police brutality and support GOOD policing and GOOD police officers. I don’t support Blue Lives Matter (Being a police officer is a choice) or All Lives Matter (because they don’t protest against police brutality when it happens to their own communities yet upset when minorities do and even worse try to silence).

It’s a shades of grey issue.

EDSGFC · 14/09/2020 07:47

As someone said before Black Lives Matter is not up for a debate, it's a fact.

I believe black lives matter. I don't support Black Lives Matter or Antifa. There's a big difference for me.

EDSGFC · 14/09/2020 07:45

@Fartcakes

No organisation is going to think that acceptable. Why do you think people that believe Black lives matter do? As someone said before Black Lives Matter is not up for a debate, it's a fact.
No organisation would think that acceptable??? Apart from the people doing the blockade you mean who represent the organisations?
SuzieQQQ · 14/09/2020 07:44

I think the BLM campaign is very different depending on where you live. I am a New Zealander. I couldn’t care less whether or not someone is black, white, pakeha, Maori Chinese etc. No one should be treated differently because of their race. I personally think every race is equal in value.

Fartcakes · 14/09/2020 07:43

Two police officers, sitting in their car, were shot at point blank range in America over the weekend. Protestors blocked the entrance to the hospital so that the ambulance was delayed getting the officers in - why am I racist for not accepting an organisation that makes doing that acceptable?

SoVeryLost · 14/09/2020 07:00

@Livelovebehappy

I think maybe it appears people are racist because they state they don’t agree with a lot of what BLM stand for, or they don’t take the knee or refuse to raise their fist for Black power. People who fall into these groups are automatically branded as racist, which obviously isn’t the case.
Are you talking about the US or UK? I’ve only seen one video from the US where they ‘bullied’ people for not raising their fist. I’ve not seen what you’ve mentioned in the UK at all, although I do think people like you are purposely detracting from the issues and finding a fight so that Black experiences are not heard.

Those details are on the BLM website. It's what they themselves state their aims being - a mission statement.

It's not something made up by the right wing press

Some very interesting points made, thank you all who have contributed so far.

Sorry I'm not black but..

As a pp said, its bringing previously concealed racist views out in the open. But you know what? Out in the open we anti racists can expose them, challenge them, defeat them. It's like drawing out guerrillas.....

nancy75 · 13/09/2020 23:13

I went on the go fund me page when we had the first matches in London, due to health issues I couldn’t attend & was going to donate but there are some aims that I don’t agree with - It doesn’t mean I don’t agree with all people being treated equally.

BLM is an acronym for a registered organisation.
BLM is also used to state Black Lives Matter.
They both exist. Not everyone supports both of them. It's frankly embarrassing that posters who don't know about the organisation are denying its existence. It raises funds. It has a neo-Marxist agenda. Its website is here
Black Lives Matter UK It explains about the different uses of BLM.

Fartcakes · 13/09/2020 22:22

@nancy75 I really do not have a clue as to what you are talking about. BLM is about being treated as an equal is all aspects of life. If you are hearing anything different to that, you should really check the source and if you are seeing anything different to that you should really check the source.

Jascarm · 13/09/2020 22:22

Just to add @Sexnotgender I don't think you asking the question to black people is racist at all. We could go into the reasons why but I think the people who need it explained to them still wouldn't get it out of choice even if you tried xx

Jascarm · 13/09/2020 22:18

Lolol!! And they still found their way to this thread - why are people so triggered by saying Black Lives Matter??? Going into some pathetic rhetoric about what BLM 'actually stands for' when the reality is you don't have a clue.

It's not up for debate. It's not a political statement either. ITS A FACT! Our lives do matter.

I don't actually care for the opinion of people who think that they can have a debate or an option that goes against black lives mattering. History is being written right now and you have clearly picked your side.

Please remember your future generations will have to answer for your actions during the present and there will come a time, when people are no longer affected by institutional racism, make their own decisions on how they view/treat their fellow humans and they will be disgusted to be related to people like yourselves.

trixiebelden77 · 13/09/2020 22:16

What a very stupid but revealing comment from MrsBtheparker.

Very common to hear people describe the activities of particular individuals as ‘diminishing’ or ‘undermining’ the cause. No. It’s impossible to undermine the fact that racism is wrong. Nobody is sitting at home being entirely anti-racist and then feels forced to change their beliefs because of the behaviour of any other anti-racists.

The only people who feel differently about the anti-racist cause because of the actions of any individual anti-racist are racist liars trying to cloak their revolting beliefs in a veil of pretended morality.

Doubletrouble99 · 13/09/2020 21:55

Bubblubarbara, how little you know!! BLM has been a movement for quite some time especially in the States.

Doubletrouble99 · 13/09/2020 21:53

A very interesting discussion. I'm white and an over 60 year old tory/brexit voter. So an 'ideal' candidate to be called racist or have questionable views as far as many are concerned. I do believe Black Lives Matter and that the general movement should be supported but I don't, obviously support the views of BLMUK or their US equivalent. I hope that this movement ensures we have 'anonymous' job applications where the name - ethnic origin of the applicant is obscured, where the sex of the applicant is obscured. Even the age could be obscured. I didn't vote for Brexit because I didn't want immigration. I voted for it because I didn't agree with freedom of movement. I feel everyone from where ever in the world should have an equal chance to come here if they have the skill we need.
I find it very difficult to understand people talking about cultural appropriation when discussing hair styles or styles of dress. We Scots have no problem with anyone wearing a kilt. In fact I love it when a certain Scottish chef wears his turban and a kilt, on TV, looks great.
I just feel that too often people presume certain things of others and that includes whites presuming things of people of another ethnic origin.

BubblyBarbara · 13/09/2020 21:49

BLM is a self-confessed Neo-Marxist organisation with various far left objectives

Stop being ridiculous, it’s a slogan and a movement. Do you think “Me Too” is a political organisation as well?

This stuff is on the BLM uk’s own website.
I think it’s a shame that the group called BLMUK & the more general BLM movement are lumped in together.
Do I support BLM as a movement - absolutely, but do I support the organisation called BLMUK? Absolutely not.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 13/09/2020 21:15

I think there are many things at play here. Like most things now you are either for or against. You either take a knee or you’re racist, you either post on Facebook all the books about racism you’ve hurriedly down loaded onto your kindle or you’re racist, comment on mass gatherings in the middle of a pandemic and you’re racist, show any support for the UK police, you’re racist.

Racism isn’t usually on a lot of people’s radars, around 3% of the U.K. population is black (I think around another 8% are non-white). The majority of people don’t really consider racism on a day to day basis, rightly or wrongly. All of a sudden the majority are faced with the issue of racism, some will use it as an opportunity to Truely educate themselves, maNy others won’t Give a fuck but use it as an opportunity to gain social media likes/display their appalling wokeness, others will feel attacked (phrases like white privilege are very unhelpful here), mob rule removing cultural monuments, generalisations about white people, there’s been a lot of aggressive rhetoric around on both sides, things are very heated. Any attempted debate is shot down.

It’s very difficult to know what the answer is, but in order to move forward I think there needs to be a lot more understanding on both sides. I also think things like cultural appropriation don’t help, most see it as fucking ridiculous and just further divides people. People who see traditions that they love being attacked, people don’t really understand the history And the way history is usually taught so get upset over things changing. People who also feel they form part of a group which has been victimised get annoyed that their plight is not on ITV every night.

Humans are by their nature tribal, they are therefore usually drawn to others who are similar. Most successful integration of different social groups throughout history is through assimilation-yet everything I see now is about dividing groups.

Hadjab · 13/09/2020 20:59

It is possible to separate BLM the group, with BLM, the belief that Black Lives Matter

It seems people are so rigid in their thinking now, when someone admits not supporting BLM they are automatically labelled as "racist". Why? I'm black and I dont support this organization. Why do white decent folks feel obliged to support so much crap?

Very well said, the extent to which BLM has been evoked irrespective of its validity in a situation has done the cause no good. I am reminded of the days of 'women's lib', by making trivial criticisms, manhole covers for example, the movement opened itself to ridicule and hence it was diminished
