Do you think there’s more racism since the BLM movement?

I was discussing this with my husband this morning and I think misogyny is worse since ‘me too’ happened and I was wondering if you’re seeing the same.

YABVU to have thought for a moment that by inviting black women to respond you'd actually get to read responses from black women.
You should have known the thread would be drowned by responses that start "I'm not black but....(what I have to say will be of greater interest and relevance anyway)..."

GreyBeeplus3 · 07/01/2026 14:55

Plus they were closet racists but dared not say!

GreyBeeplus3 · 07/01/2026 14:26

Yes, white people going on about what about white lives?
Well,
If me asking for what you take for granted in your day to day living with no assumptions crudely assumed about you based on your skin colour is seen as not acceptable then
You're a racist at the self-serving table of your own narrow 'Superior because I'm white
always right and no black will be ever as good as me" buffet aren't you?
And to claim its racist to only ask black mumsnetters about BLM
Well why is that so?
You don't think we've put up with enough of your arrogant assumptive animalistic views about us for long enough?
You seriously say we should just put up and shut up?
And let the rotting down of supposedly adequate but not really race relations laws continue to be seen as more than perfect?
There you go again; with offence being taken by your delicate white souls

GreyBeeplus3 · 07/01/2026 13:54

And of course you're so right!
Whatever can you tell a white person that they don't already know about everything???
@CuriousaboutSamphire I’m not sure why My view of the ‘colour blind’ is likely to piss people off. I merely expressed my view. In an honest way. It’s my own experience that I am sharing. That’s it. The accusatory tone maybe could have been dampened down but I felt that would water down the sentiment. Offence was not intended. I’m just speaking my truth. As to what you CAN do. You have the privilege of doing nothing - but contributing to these threads shows an interest in humanity (ignoring the racists) which of course the BAME community largely appreciate as they know they could never affect change alone...... I have v.close non-BAME friends who I just speak my truth to and they speak their truth. That helps a lot. We don’t step on eggshells. It would be nice if respectfully we could also do that anonymously without getting each others backs up. And TRY to understand the views of others. It’s not always possible. Lived experiences are very hard to articulate and probably more difficult to understand. How does someone who goes through the world comparatively (I am not negating the misogyny that all women experience etc) anonymous ever understand what it means to be judged (largely negatively) On sight. I have no idea. But lobbying and supporting institutional change must be a start.......whether that be BLM or similar.
Don't apologise. This topic offends every which way. Anyone engaging with the thread has to expect their views to be challenged.

I understand what you mean about eggshells. I see it with colleagues in the food bank/community charity I work/volunteer at. We have a number of well meaning volunteers from reasonably comfortable backgrounds who do stumble sometimes, are a little overly 'pleasant' when dealing with BAME clients. I've worked here for 20+ years. I've seen the BAME client base change from mainly Afro Carribbean to Afghani, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and on to Eastern European and round again, as wider demographics change and our smal town houses some of the city overspill.

That 'overspill is mainly white, as the main city is about 85% white. The small market town I live in is 98% white, with about 4% of those being Eastern European. We also have a large transient Eastern European population of seasonal workers. Most of the people I live and work with have very little contact with anyone from any BAME community, or any community outwith the town and surrounding villages. They are very local, very rural, tend to be quite insular and have a number of high socio economic issues.

Their attitudes towards any 'move in' is quite hostile, it is hard to gauge any racism in that make up, but it is there, of ignorance and a general distrust and distain for anyone not born and bred here. I am not sure how that attitude can be changed. For example, we have a town mayor. Her acceptance speech thanked, quite specifically "All the lovely local people, born and bred, who voted for me".

I make it sound like I live in Deliverance or American Werewolf in London Smile

But there must be very many areas across the UK like this. They don't see the issues affecting BAME communities and individuals as they have almost zero knowledge of any, outside of music and films. It so lacks ethnic diversity that Ofsted inspectors tie themselves in knots when trying to guage school diversity/equality measures. How can any business or school/college recruit more diversely when a more divers population does not exist locally, or within 40, 50 miles?

Sorry, I am blathering now. I'll stop. That's starting to sound like an excuse rather than an exploration of issues. I hope it makes sense.

@bellyhop we don't want you either 🤢🤮🤮🤮

Can you explain what you don't support about Black Lives Matter...you know as a black person (if you actually are)**

You question my ‘blackness’ and I’m glad you find it revolving that I don’t subscribe to the BLM political agenda! As well meaning as the underlying message may be you sound as blind to this as most others. Should every woman support feminist movements? Does it make them less of a women if they don’t?

I’m proud to be a black woman. But I also don’t only want to be seen as a woman who is black! Which is exactly what the BLM movement is doing, creating what it’s fighting against.

Bl3ss3dm0m · 15/09/2020 00:42

@EDSGFC, sorry to @ you, but I did want to make sure that you saw my post. It is not meant as a derail, I just wanted to say something to you EDS, and felt that if I pm'd you, it would seem like I was secretly backing you up, but not prepared to put my head above the parapet.
I agree with every single thing that you have said on this thread. As I am hopeless at remembering names, I have no idea if that goes for any comments or OP's that you may have made on any other threads.
Whenever I have made comments on other threads that are to do with POC, some people seem to almost get a perverse pleasure out of misunderstanding what I am saying. They really appear to want me to be a racist, so that they can belittle me, and feel themselves far superior to me. Most of the people who have done this have given their colour, and if we have to acknowlege peoples colour (because otherwise we are one of those awful breed of colour blind people), the majority of them were white - as am I. For anyone else who may be reading this, this last paragraph of mine is, MY opinion, so please do not try and tar EDS character with my opinion, it is not anything that s/he has even hinted at. I am sure there will be many posters who will take my paragraph as being total proof of my racism - I am not racist, I find it deeply saddening to keep on being misjudged as such, but if it makes any of you feel even a little better about yourselves to call me such, or any other names - maybe Karen - whatever the colour of your skin, or your gender, then I am glad to have been of some service. Please remember I give these views in my name only. BLM, but I do not support everything about the UK and USA BLM organisations.

It’s created more of a divide between black and white. I’m black and noticed racist comments from others who are also black so it goes both ways.

As a PP said I’ve also had some white people almost go out of their way to prove they aren’t racist, which I find it offensive tbh. Where race wasn’t seen it now is and I will never support the BLM movement.

Straven123 · 14/09/2020 21:20

Replying to @JustAnotherPoster00
Straven you dont believe POC in the uk when they talk about how they encounter racism every single day....

Straven123 · 14/09/2020 21:18

There is racism in the U.K., I'm sure black people encounter it every day, stop and search is used to stop knifing sin London - but thug cops in the USA shooting unarmed black people in the back is not what we should be concentrating on in The U.K.
Fight for equality in education, the workplace, positions of authority etc. That's hopefully doable - fixing gun toting police in the US isn't.

Operation Trident was set up by the Metropolitan Police to specifically to tackle gang crime which was having a disproportionately negative effect within the Black community.

EDSGFC · 14/09/2020 19:35

What did you mean when you wrote that?

I meant what it says, not what you accused me of saying, including that the met police force was put together to stop black people killing each other and they needed an intervention, which I definitely did not say and I certainly don't think the entire met police force was put together for only one purpose.

Secondly, I've not accused you of being an angry black woman. I accused you of using a derogatory term towards some disabled people (simple) and also of using a misogynistic insult - Karen (which is also thought to be racist too as it's only levelled at white, middle aged women). So nothing to do with your race but with the insults you are choosing to fling about. Now you're derailing by continuing your personal attack on me so I shall leave you to it.

Jascarm · 14/09/2020 19:33

And I sincerely apologise if I offended anyone by calling the person simple.

Maybe I could have put this better and said they have quite a basic thought process?

I'm always learning and happy to be corrected once taught.

Jascarm · 14/09/2020 19:28

@EDSGFC

Wasn't "black on black" crime coined after the Met were asked to specifically set up a task force to tackle it though, in part by communities concerned that their young people were being stabbed and killed?
@EDSGFC

What did you mean when you wrote that?

Lol oh here we go am I the angry black woman now? You were going off earlier, why the change of heart? It's not nice being targeted is it? You're the one who endorses this though? You are happy for the police to target people because of 'black on black crime'. Does this not feel...fair?? Lol

The term Karen is used to describe ANYONE, who has the same line of thought as you.

Jascarm · 14/09/2020 19:19

*devisive not decisive

EDSGFC · 14/09/2020 19:18

You said the met police force was put together because black people wanted us to 'stop killing each other'

Where did I say that?

You have a lot of time on your hands Karen. - can you please stop with this misogynistic put down?

You asked me multiple questions and are now berating me because I responded.

Then you reverted to ableist insults and misogynistic (and possibly racist depending on whose version of "Karen" you believe) put downs.

Don't worry, I won't engage further. I'll leave you to the echo chamber you clearly desire.

Not exactly the topic of the thread but George Floyds murder was discussed at my DS’s primary school in an age appropriate way but he has somehow translated this into the police being bad, I took him to the shops and he shrank back when he saw an Officer approaching. When I asked him why he said ‘Police will arrest and hurt you for no reason’ and when I tried to say they wouldn’t he just said ‘well they did it to that man and other people’
