Neighbours and Weed

NC.

We had new neighbours move in about a month ago. Very young couple, 22 max, 2 kids. It's their first house, he works shifts, and you can tell they're still finding their way in life. Ok to chat to. That's the good bits.

They are very vocal, argue a lot, the kids are screaming around 18 hours of the day. We are already pretty fed up with them but keep reminding ourselves that these are strange times and it may get better after lockdown. We're also both quite avoidant to confrontation.

They quite obviously smoke weed, and a lot of it. The man put a chair half way down our garden to smoke it during the day (facing towards our decking / seating area which was previously quite private), but at night smokes indoors. The smell is permeating through our walls and into our house (we're both mid terrace). I used to smoke weed and am fairly non judgemental about it, but my house fucking stinks. Plus knowing they have a toddler and a baby indoors, it makes me very uneasy.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? DP has offered to have a quite chat which I hope will help, but I'm not sure. I think we should report to SS due to the children, DP concerned that they will immediately know it's us and could lash out.

I suffer quite badly from anxiety and am often torn about what to do in difficult situations, hence reaching out to MN. If anyone has been in a similar situation would be keen to hear your solutions.

Looking for Advice: Antisocial Neighbors Causing Issues

Hi everyone,

I’m really struggling with my neighbour's and could use some advice. They’ve been smoking cannabis constantly, and the smell keeps coming into my home and garden.

It gets worse—they’re always swearing loudly, and there are often kids around, including their own, who are smoking it too. It’s awful to see, and I’m really worried about the example this is setting for young people, not to mention the health risks for everyone involved.especially since there is a toddler there.

On top of all that, there’s banging at odd hours. Any advice on who to contact in these matters?

If anyone has dealt with anything like this or has advice I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Just come across this thread so wanted to add.. we have had the same problem for the past year (finally moving this weekend, yay!).
40ish guy and his younger brother live together, state of house and garden leave A LOT to be desired, bin overflowing for months, dog faeces everywhere and the place absolutely reeks of weed.
As soon as they open their front door one can smell the weed and then
also same when they're in the back.
Morning and evening.
Guy has his young kids around too.
Living in a terraced house , it definitely does permeate the walls and through any cracks so my house tends to smell of weed quite often.
I have dabbled in my younger days and this is not the weed I know - their weed smells very particularly unpleasant .. cloying fermented sand and sawdust pub floor comes to mind!
Quite sure they have no idea how much it stinks.
Nice enough couple of guys, but the older one does get extremely loud at times, effing and blinding at his kids.
He also receives random 'guests'.... ah hem.

As you are on quite cordial terms with your neighbours, could you not suggest that he goes further down the garden to smoke and not face your house; you could also mention that him smoking it indoors causes your house to smell of it. It's possible he thinks nobody knows and he might be more careful. It's worth a try.

Not sure why you're derailing from the purpose of the thread too much but to get back to the point: Whilst being in charge of children, it's stupid dangerous and negligent to be under the influence of such a drug. Quite simple.

MuminMama · 18/06/2020 22:22

Like any drug it literally kills brain cells.

Hence my question about what you considered as a drug for the purposes of that broad statement.

As recreational marijuana use becomes legalized throughout the US, many people now wonder howmarijuanaaffects the brain and whether or not it kills brain cells.

It's hard not to wonder about the thought processes of people who think this is necessary for one of the first plants mankind chose to cultivate and domesticate - over 8000 years ago. Maybe we need some studies into wheat, barley and peas too ?

Wherever we poke back in history, we discover stoners:

A well-preserved substance found in a 2,700-year-old temple in Tel Arad has been identified as cannabis, including its psychoactive compound THC.

Oestrogen is rather good for brains too !

LemonPeonies · 18/06/2020 15:51

Insulin?! Grin what are you chatting about, are you high right now? Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that allows your body to use sugar (glucose) from carbohydrates in the food that you eat for energy or to store glucose for future use.

What doesn't make sense to you? Paracetamol is a pain killer, it affects the brain receptors in your brain but it doesn't cause brain damage. Please educate yourself before chiming in. I'm speaking from a scientifically proven point of you, not only anecdotes.

LemonPeonies · 18/06/2020 15:47

@muminmama As recreational marijuana use becomes legalized throughout the US, many people now wonder howmarijuanaaffects the brain and whether or not it kills brain cells. Just as years of heavyalcohol, meth, andheroinuse can cause some irreversible brain damage, prolonged marijuana abuse can affect the ability of brain cells to convey messages (also known as brain activity). Using marijuana can cause damage to brain cells that results in a number of concurrent symptoms throughout the body.

Like other drugs, components of marijuana bind with specific receptors in the brain. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is marijuana’s primary psychoactive ingredient, and it attaches to the brain’s cannabinoid receptors (officially known as cannabinoid receptor type 1 or CB1). These receptors connect to nerves in the brain function which govern memory, appetite, pain regulation, and mood.

When a personsmokes marijuana, they may notice they struggle with staying focused or recalling important details. This can worsen with prolonged marijuana use, resulting in problems like poor memory and concentration. Motor skills can also be affected by the drug. If someone decides to drive while high, they can endanger their lives and the lives of others.

I know three people who haven't had psychosis and anxiety because of weed. So what? And I don't see how it can be 'disgusting', it's a plant for god's sake. And as to all drugs killing brain cells, is it just the illegal ones, or are you including paracetamol/alcohol/caffeine/epinephrine/estradiol/insulin? It doesn't make any sense.

LemonPeonies · 17/06/2020 09:45

@buildingbridge exactly, I only judge bad parenting when it can result in burns, death etc which I have seen as a result of poor parenting. I never said they were shit people just that I can always tell. I know a successful photographer but he smokes every day, can't speak to his family when he gets home until he's had that spliff. His mental health is shocking. You can't deny the mental health affects, I know 3 people who have had psychosis and anxiety because of weed. Like I said it literally kills brain cells. They don't re generate you know! I admit I got defensive in response to the bitchy patronising responses I got from women who like to jump on bothers on MN cos they don't have much else going on. I don't have to put up with peoples shit outside of work Grin

buildingbridge · 17/06/2020 02:11

Sorry Lemon my post was not directed at you.

buildingbridge · 17/06/2020 02:07

Lemon and Thisshit you are getting defensive. My ex, who I was with for 9 years, took week like no other. It stunk, his room smelt of it, his eyes were red, his mood was variable, paranoid as fuck and trust me, you know when someone takes weed, it's just that people won't say it to your face!
....and the old line "I know so and so who smokes weed and they are a successful lawyer, doctor, business man".

Who the fuck cares? Their success does not gloss over the fact that weed is disgusting. There are many successful people who take crack and cocaine...they may be good at what they do, but their drug habits makes me think they have little regards to their own mental health , physical health, and being a good role model for their children.

I think a nurse has every right to be judgemental, they see the detrimental effects of people's life style choices and heck yeah, I would judge too, I know several people where weed has fucked up their minds.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 17/06/2020 00:52

@heartsonacake, sorry for the late response (lock down has taken a toll on my body clock) but in reference to the alcohol being legal means that the revenue gets to the right place and not in the hands of dealers /bootleggers.
Currently the NHS treats all ailments relating to poor lifestyle choices, such as cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking and diabetes etc, but we can tax those. We are not getting any revenue for illegal drugs, NHS still treats addicts and people will still take drugs if they are that way inclined - so we should legalise and tax.

Lonelycrab · 16/06/2020 21:50

No it’s because to blindly follow the letter of the law as some sort of perfection is actually quite a shallow aspect to show. Laws change, they always have.

How’s tax evasion? Hint: looking better by the daySmile

namechangetheworld · 16/06/2020 21:40

That doesn’t show much substance imo

Perhaps because you only pasted the first four words of my response?

Lonelycrab · 16/06/2020 21:18

Erm yes, it would

That doesn’t show much substance imo.

heartsonacake · 16/06/2020 21:17

But I guess a glass of wine in the evening is fine, yes?

Lonelycrab No, I don’t think it is. I think alcohol should be illegal, but it’s so embedded in our society as “normal” that unfortunately that isn’t going to happen.

namechangetheworld · 16/06/2020 21:13

So if the law were to change, your stance would shift, no?

Erm yes, it would. I would have exactly the same opinion of it as I do alcohol. Fine to be consumed moderately but certainly not when in charge of children.

But the law hasn't changed has it? It's still illegal. People can dress it up all they like, with their 'well everyone I know who smokes it is a super successful professional!' but at the end of the day, all of these fine upstanding pillars of the community that you know are breaking the law.

LemonPeonies · 16/06/2020 21:13

Bitchy not butch*

LemonPeonies · 16/06/2020 21:12

Why are you all jumping on me to stick up for parents who quite frankly aren't looking after their kids properly? Do you think it's cool to smoke around children? Do you think they're capable of watching them and making sure they don't pour a kettle over themselves or something? Then they'll be in A and E won't they. You always get butch women on MN sticking up for bad parenting. I'm a horrid parent for stating facts which is smoking weed slows your reflexes , bodies responses etc which isn't good when you're around children? I would be more worried about parents who think it's normal and safe ya mentalists Grin

LemonPeonies · 16/06/2020 21:08

You're changing the subject by asking about alcohol and I don't work in A and E. Neither is any good to be under the influence of when caring for children, which I have already said in a previous comment.

bengalcat · 16/06/2020 21:06

I sympathise - hate the smell of weed - notice it in our local park walking the dog in the evenings , in Hyde Park and the guy upstairs and some neighbours nearby - grrr
