AIBU to ask about the creepiest thing that has ever happened to you that you cannot explain?

I realise threads like these have probably been done to death but I am super bored and struggling to find anything to watch/read.

What I’m puzzled about with the ‘woodland’ story is why the references to Savernake Forest are gone. Perhaps they were in other posts. But it was definitely mentioned.

Boatymcboatofftheboat · 28/04/2020 22:06

Hands down the scariest thing that ever happened to me:

Last week I was eating my lunch and suddenly the Easter plant on the kitchen island in the shape of a rabbit starting turning around. Just fucking turning slowly in a circle.

I nearly had a fucking heart attack. IT WAS MOVING ON ITS OWN

Son’s battery brio train was behind it. But there was a full 5 seconds where my brain literally could not compute the data behind what I was seeing and what it meant 🤪

I've just remembered another story that scared the shite out of me at the time. When I was little I was given a porcelain doll for Christmas - I really loved her in the beginning but as time went on she began to freak me out. I remember I found it hard to fall asleep because it felt like she was just "watching me". Eventually I moved her, I put her on a shelf that was directly above my bed (fuck knows why), I guess I thought that if I couldn't see her I would sleep better. Anyway, one night she "slipped" of the shelf and feel directly on to my face. The strange thing was that if she had just slipped off there is no way she would have fallen me the way that she did - her face was directly on top of mine.

I made my parents get rid of her after that.

Woodlands story.

What. A. Load. Of. Bollocks.

carlywurly · 28/04/2020 21:50

We have loads of these stories in the family. We present as fairly normal but weird things have always happened around us all.

My most recent one is the other week when I'd just come back from a run and was bouncing around the kitchen with music still coming through my AirPods.

I saw part of the kitchen worktop totally warp and bend upwards by about 6 inches and then come crashing back down - I was nowhere near it and there's no way the pressure of me bopping about could have possibly done it. There was a pack of biscuits and a couple of other bits on there which flew up and back down again - I heard the rustle even over my music as they landed.

It was so bizarre I just stood there with my mouth open for about 10 minutes. No sign of damage. I can only think I hallucinated it but I've never experienced anything remotely like that before.

OvaHere · 28/04/2020 21:50

Not creepy as such but I've always remembered it.

When I was about 8/9 I had a plastic purple ring I loved. I'd bought it on a summer holiday in Devon. One time I lost it during school swimming lessons (had to take it off then couldn't find it when it came to getting dressed).

I thought it had gone for good and was rather upset. Then a week or so later it randomly turned up at my Grandma's house. I was puzzled for a long time.

Rational explanations I've come up with as an adult are I was mistaken about where I lost it - not my recollection then or now but feasible I guess. Or my parents/grandparents bought a replacement - less likely because it was unusual and I imagine difficult to source back then. Also I think they would just have told me.

ladyflower23 · 28/04/2020 21:49

I can't even explain how teriffied I feel after reading that woodland story 😱

Keeponkeepigon · 28/04/2020 21:48

Normal school day, family around the table having breakfast. I was eight and said out of nowhere ‘wouldn’t it be strange if Grandad died’ Mum replied ‘that’s a very odd thing to say!’. That afternoon my Grandad died. Felt responsible for it for a long time afterwards!

IHateCoronavirus · 28/04/2020 21:48

My brother lives in the house we grew up in. It has been in the family for generations. He mentioned that my nephew was having trouble sleeping since being moved into what was my old bedroom, saying someone was there.
I turned to my dad and said “do you remember I always would come into your room terrified?” It always felt like there was a really oppressive presence leaning over me in the middle of the night.
Then my dad said “do you know it’s funny you should say that. That is the room my grandfather died in and he was a mean old bugger!” Shock

Batmanandbobbin · 28/04/2020 21:45

This thread makes me queasy.

Echobelly · 28/04/2020 21:40

Not me, but my dad, who is the most skeptical, not-believing-in-anything supernatural person.

My parents own a 600-year-old house in Eastern Europe, which has had a number of fires in its history, including at least one where the owner died. My dad was playing piano (loudly) in the front room, when suddenly the grandfather clock chimed several times although it was not on the hour (it had never done that before) and he said he had a strong sense of a disapproving presence standing behind him. As I said, he doesn't believe in anything 'wooo', but he feels fairly sure it was someone from the house's past.

happinessischocolate · 28/04/2020 21:35

I used to live in a flat in an large old house with 2 friends, we were also mates with the people who lived upstairs. When we first moved in I thought one of my flat mates was playing tricks, moving stuff around, there was knocking at the front door and no one there, strange noises in the hallway, I didn't take it seriously even though As time went on I thought could feel a certain "presence" in the flat when i was on my own.

One night I got home late from work and there was lots of noise coming from upstairs, it sounded like they were moving furniture around and stomping up and down the hallway, I was in my room when I heard my flat mates get back from the pub and all the noise from upstairs stopped. I mentioned how noisy it had been, but my flat mates were surprised as apparently there was no one upstairs as they all been up the pub together.

Then a couple of nights later I was again home alone and watching the tv when I "felt" someone walk into the room and sit down next to me on the sofa, I swear I even saw the cushion go down. Shock I muttered under my breathe leave me alone, just go away, and leave me alone and ran into my bedroom and locked the door.

I never mention this to my flat mates and yet immediately all the weird things stopped happening, a few days or so later we were in the upstairs flat having some drinks when one of the guys mentioned that "it" was back again. Apparently for ages things were always going missing or furniture getting moved around and so they'd got someone in the cleanse the place, a month or so previously and it had all stopped, but then the night before he'd come home to find his wardrobe in the middle of the bedroom.

BlueJava · 28/04/2020 21:35

Around 20 years ago DP and me went to his graduation ceremony at Uni. To save money we stayed in the university halls but as it was after the end of term we were the only people in this huge building with a huge number of rooms (think 5 floors, 40 rooms a floor). We slept ok, got up the next morning and after he'd showered and dressed he went off to find something for breakfast and bring it back whilst I finished showering and packed.

He found some stuff from a corner shop, brought it back to the room and we ate some of it (basically junk food and a couple of cans of sprite/7 up). There was a load of stuff left and it was on the bed with the drinks on the desk. We left the room to find the communal bin in the communal area opposite to put the remains in, he came with me. We left the door open.

We went about 10 feet max into the open plan communal kitchen opposite the room, we put our stuff in the bin and returned to the room. All the stuff we hadn't eaten and our open cans of drink had disappeared. We knew we were in the right room as our bags were there (untouched). We searched everywhere for the remaining food and drink.

We can only conclude that someone took it - but we had literally gone into the open space opposite our room and had been in sight of it at all times. We also didn't like to think that someone was creeping about the building whilst we thought we were the only ones in it. I was even more scared because I'd used the open (no lock) communcal shower earlier that day by myself and anyone could have walked in. It still makes me go goosebumps now! We have never solved the mystery. By the way the 7UP was mine - I have never drunk any since!

Placemarking for the avalanche story i love these threads

NotPayingAttention · 28/04/2020 21:28

In the middle of the night when I was about 7, my mum took a phone call downstairs from my aunt telling her that my paternal grandfather had died suddenly. Apparently it was a short phone call and my mother hardly spoke. My DF had slept through the phonecall and she decided she would let him sleep till the morning before telling him, no point in disturbing sleep for bad news.
After she'd gone back to bed a little while later apparently I came into her room to tell her I'd just been dreaming about talking to my grandad. I don't remember this at all. She told me one night (as an adult) after a few glasses of wine. I cried. Was very fond of my grandad.

Very interested to hear the Avalanche story?

nevisbump · 28/04/2020 21:27

Upstairs in our house and we occasionally get a strong smell of cigarette smoke. It got so bad that I thought my dh was smoking again and he thought the same as me, although we have never smoked in the house. My mum has mentioned that she has noticed it too

Snowcappedmountains · 28/04/2020 21:26

@scaredbunny When I was around 17/18 my group of friends and I would always stay around one of our other friends houses. His parents were always away so it became a kind of party house. We'd have sleep overs, play video games, drink and just hang out. Anyway his house always had a very weird vibe about it, it was very old and kind of rundown. One day we all stayed over and eventually fell asleep. During the night of us ended up getting woken up by these really bloody loud footsteps runnning up the stairs really fast and when I mean got woken up we all literally jumped out of our skins because it was THAT loud. His house was detached so there was no way it came from next door and there was no one else in the house. There might be a really simple explanation for it but it did freak me out at the time.

Oh that’s the Savernake Forest story!

TeapotCollection · 28/04/2020 21:18

Don’t know who posted this originally but I think this the ‘woodland’ story that others have mentioned. I found it on a thread where someone else was asking about it. It comes into my mind every time one of threads comes up

I’m off to bed, sleep well everyone 😊

Found it. Warning: it's very long (sorry) and very freaky, and if anyone can come up with a rational explanation I'd be extremely grateful because I'm generally a pretty rational non-woo where's-the-evidence person, but I've never been able to explain this and it still makes my heart beat faster and the hair stand up on my arms when I think about it, years later.

I was pet sitting for my friend several years ago. She had moved into a sort of small holding right on the edge of a village in the SW, with a huge garden that backed onto trees. At the time she had a right menagerie - chickens, ducks, a couple of Shetlands, cats and four black retrievers, three fully grown and one a half grown puppy. Originally DH had been going to come with me as a little holiday but the dates she ended up having to go away for work clashed with a couple of his medical appointments so he stayed at home with our dog and I went to petsit alone.

It was about halfway through my stay, a couple of nights to go. Late evening, already dark when I heard a massive commotion from the chicken shed, banging and thumping. I assumed a fox or something had got in so went out to check. As I was halfway across the garden the noise stopped instantly as if it had been shut off; by the time I got to the shed all was calm and the chickens were all settled, mostly asleep. No sign of any intruder or disturbance at all, nothing to explain the noise or any indication that the chickens had made a noise. Bit freaky but I didn't (and still don't) know much about The Way of Chicken so I locked up again and left them to it.

As I went back in the house a small black shape ran past me out of the back door and I realised the puppy must have got out. It streaked across the garden and off towards the woods. Cue much cursing, then calling her name in vain. More cursing when she didn't come back. I grabbed a torch and put one of the other dogs on the lead, partly for protection, partly because I thought the pup was more likely to come back if I had one of her canine companions with me and partly because I didn't fancy my chances of finding my way back to the house on my own even though there were a couple of vague paths that I'd followed when walking the dogs throughout the week.

Off we trudged into the wood along one of these paths, me calling pup's name at intervals and trying not to imagine murderers and rapists behind every tree trunk. We got to a point where it felt like the trees were starting to thin out and I remember thinking that I didn't remember a clearing on this path and we must have gone wrong somewhere when the dog with me slowed right down and started to resist going forward. I tried to jolly her along - while my stomach suddenly dropped like a stone - and she started growling, a really low serious rumbling growl. By this time I was practically shitting myself. I tried shining the torch ahead but the beam just sort of bounced back off the darkness if that makes sense? I got the sense of something - or somethings - moving but just sinuous deeper black shapes against the blackness and always on the periphery of vision. (The hairs on my arms are standing up again just remembering how completely and utterly terrified I was. I have honestly never known a feeling like it.)

At this point the dog sank right down, still growling, hackles up and refused to budge. I muttered something like "Jesus, you have got to be kidding me" and this ugly gurgling inhuman sort of voice hissed, right up close as if someone was right next to me "don't say that name". At the same time there was a horrible snickering sort of laugh. I cant express how utterly petrified I was. I can't remember having any coherent thoughts apart from the word "evil". That's the only clear thing I can remember. Me and the dog were frozen to the spot with pure fear. Then a different voice, really commanding, said "GO. BACK." That sounded more in my head but echoey, where the others had sounded out in the air IYSWIM?

Wherever it came from it did the trick. Me & the dog turned and belted back through the woods. She basically towed me, I just clung onto her lead stumbling to keep up and sobbing with fear. I lost the torch somewhere on that wild run but there was no way I was stopping to find it. How I didn't run blindly into a tree I'll never know, she guided me I guess. I can remember thinking desperately that I mustn't let go of her lead or "they" would get me.

When we got back to the garden she suddenly stopped - I did fall over her this time, onto my hands and knees - turned around and started snarling, proper teeth bared, rabid-looking snarls, back at the trees and the darkness. I thought I heard the snickering again but the blood was pounding in my ears so hard I can't be sure. I scrambled up and ran to the back door and she followed me but backing and snarling all the way as if holding something at bay. Oh, and the chicken shed was banging and thumping again. I got the back door open, me and her belted in, I slammed home every bolt behind us. The other dogs left behind were staring at the door and growling too with their hackles up and when I saw all three of them, puppy included, acting like that I started to cry properly because I honestly thought I was trapped in some horror film nightmare and was going to die. I don't know - I still don't know - what the black shape was that ran past me out of the house and triggered all of this because the puppy was right there in the kitchen.

Anyway I made sure every door and window was locked and bolted, I turned on every light in the house, I wandered round mumbling all sorts of weird half-religious half-spiritual shit to ward off evil spirits. Gradually the dogs settled down and stopped growling, and eventually stopped glancing at the door. Funnily enough I didn't sleep for one second that night and I rang my DH and begged him to come over the last couple of days. I know I didn't dream it because I was covered in scratches from running through the woods and had grazed hands from where I fell over the dog in the garden.

Nothing like that has happened before or since and I hope it never, ever does. It was the single most horrible, terrifying experience of my entire life."
